I am currently trying to upgrade over 100 rpms on multiple Red Hat servers. Whenever I try to do a rpm -u /packages/*.rpm i recieve a failed dependencies error on the very first rpm. I know that I can go though each rpm one by one and trace each dependency but that will take forever. Is there a way to skip these errors? I know the -nodeps command for rpm but I dont want to screw something up but running all of these rpms on -nodeps

Trying to install net-snmp on a VM running rhel5. I did a 'rpm -qa |grep snmp' and it returned 'net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5' as already being installed.
So, I then ran 'rpm -ivh net-snmp-5.3.2.2-9.el5.1.x86_64rpm' and it returned an error: Failed dependencies: net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5 is needed.
Why isn't it recognizing that net-snmp-libs is already installed on the server?

1. The system has no more ptys. Ask your system administrator to create more. 2. The system only has a finite number of ptys and you have many of them in use. The usual reason for this is that you forgot (or didn't know) to call "wait" after closing each of them.
So it looks like the system is falling short of the /dev/pty ...atleast I think so. Dont know the real reason.

I'm new to Linux and am trying to install libcurl to use in my c++ code on my fedora 14 system. I went to the libcurl site and downloaded the binary package for Redhat Linux 7.2 on i386. There was no download for Fedora. It was an .rpm package and so I used rpm -i libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386.rpm to install it.
I received the following errors: error: Failed dependencies: libcom_err.so.3 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 libcrypto.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 libgdbm.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 liblber.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 libldap.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 libsasl.so.7 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386 libssl.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i38
Do I need to simply download these files? Or is it a problem of downloading the wrong binary package? If I do need to download them then from where?

Never mind, I just did a yum install libcurl and it worked out...... yum is pretty amazing.
My goal here is to install the truetype fonts so I can use them in openoffice. I'm using Fedora 13 w/ Gnome. Just installed it yesterday, I followed the instructions found here: [URL] but I get this error: "error: Failed dependencies: /usr/sbin/chkfontpath is needed by msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch" I found chkfontpath at rpm.pbone.net and put it in my rpms folder but now I get "xfs is needed by chkfontpath-1.10.1-2.fc13.i686"

I'm trying to install squirrel mail in Fedora 10 server: I'm following this tutorial: [URL]. I'm at sudo rpm -ivh courier-imap-4.4.1.20080920-1.10.i386.rpm When I run the command I get: error: Failed dependencies: /usr/local/bin/perl is needed by courier-imap-4.4.1.20080920-1.10.i386
I found this page [URL] which actually describes the error and gives a "solution" however it doesn't seem to solve my problem error: Failed dependencies: /usr/local/bin/perl is needed by courier-imap-4.1.1-1.4.i386 Solution: export PATH=/bin:/usr/bin
I tried installing the RPM from tcpflow website. error: Failed dependencies: libpcap.so.0.6.2 is needed by tcpflow-0.21-1.i386 I installed libpcap1-32bit, but doesn't help. I tried added soft-link to libpcap.so.1.0.0 from libpcap.so.0.6.2 to workaround, doesn't help. hen I DLed the tarball, ./configure gives an error, even after including --with-pcap=/usr/lib64/libpcap.so.1.0.0 checking for --with-pcap option... configure: error: /usr/lib64/libpcap.so.1.0.0 does not exist I CAN'T install the rpm, I CAN't compile from source. I can't find this program on any suse repo. I need to use this prog -- what can I do?
I have configured the remote installation of Fedora 13 with kickstart with nfs installation method. All work ok until I boot the Fedora 13 client system.
Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.
First, I thought that I had an error on my NFS configuration but I was wrong. I opened tty with ALT+F4 on the Fedora 13 client and I sew this error:

Is this a bug or can I modify anything to correct this error? How?
Our backup script was working fine (ssh to the server, back up /home to a second hard drive on my computer). Then right after an ubuntu update, it quit working. I investigated and found that "something" had changed the label on the backup hdd to what looked like gibberish to me. But the script identified the backup hdd by its uuid, which didn't change. Yet, here is the error I get when the backup fails: receiving file list ... done [took about 5 seconds] rsync: mkdir "/media/14D9-3B1F/server-backup" failed: No such file or directory (2) rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(594) [receiver=3.0.6]
Note that the backup hdd IS mounted, uuid is correct, and the folder 'server-backup' DOES exist. Does anyone have a clue for me? I'm moderately experienced in Linux and ubuntu. Our server runs centos 5. And as stated, the backup ran fine for several weeks. I think there was a new linux kernel on that update, but at this point a while later I don't know which one. Current kernel is .2.6.31-22-generic.
I am needing to install the geda pcb layout package on my system. The one that is in the repository is a much older version, 20091103, and some projects I need to modify were developed using a newer version, 20100929, and the older one on Ubuntu will not open them. I downloaded the pcb source and ran configure and a couple of dependencies failed that I was able to correct with synaptic. But, then it complained about not having gdlib-config. Which I cannot find that in the repositories. What do I need to get?

I am trying to install a program called PQLII (seismology related). I'm running Red Hat Linux Fedora 9. When I installed the OS, I selected "Everything". When I run: rpm -ivh PQL-2009-246.i386.rpm It returns: error: Failed dependencies: libXFixes.so.3 is needed by PQL-2009-246 libXinerama.so.1 is needed by PQL-2009-246 rtld(GNU_HASH) is needed by PQL-2009-246
OK, so I google the 3 files listed and download them which I found on [URL]. None of the filenames listed matched precisely those listed, but I downloaded files that were as near a match as possible, i.e: libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm libXinerama-1.0.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm
Being the logical type, I first try to install libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm since it's listed first, but it generates: error: Failed dependencies: rtld(GNU_HASH) is needed by libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9 Ok, so then I run: rpm -ivh glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm which generates: error: Failed dependencies: glibc-common = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-2.8-3
I persevere, search for and download glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm. rpm -ivh glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm generates: error: Failed dependencies: glibc = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-common-2.8-3 tzdata >= 2003a is needed by glibc-common-2.8-3 Am I downloading the wrong files?
