i don't understand what I am doing wrong. I started a CentOS Vm through Vmware server 1.05 When I run the machine I preform Dhclient and my machine gets an IP internet works fine.
When I change my IP to static everything stops working I cant ping anything anymore I cant ping my server I cant ping my gateway I cant ping google My config is done through Webmin but I know it can also be done through /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 My hosts file has this

I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on my server about 2 weeks ago, I setup remote desktop and figured to just leave the password field out as it suppose to be pre-configured to only accept local connections, well, apparently not. I was noticing some strange network activity and checked my router connections and sure enough I see port 5900 to the server, open vino icon and see that there is someone else connected! (IP of unauthorized user: 77.29.51.239 ).. Immediately kick them and set a password. This should really be addressed and/or a password should be defaulted or at the very least the "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network." should be removed.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop Compaq cq60 and once I installed opensuse 11.1 64 with a Atheros AR5001 wifi card (pci). It worked and connected to several wap at home and abroad with no problem. I upgrade the laptop with a clean install to OpenSuSE 11.4 (also x86_64).Now when I try to bring the interface up a strange message appears. Moreover! I had the same problem with a Netgear usb wifi dongle!A Realtek completely different chipset. Before the problems a small explanation of the setup.
The module for the Atheros is loaded with no problems.I already tested rmmod ath5k and rmmod ath and then modprobe ath5k ... no problems whatsoever.The same happens for the NetGear usb wifi dongle! It is immediately recognized as soon as the module is inserted and the module loaded.I also checked this with lsudev and lshal ... I could not see any problems there ... I do not use NetworkManager as my experience tells me it is better to first configure on cli and then move to the graphical interface when things are working conveniently.
So both internal and usb wifi cards are detected and the respective modules loaded with no problems.They are both configured in yast to be activated manually and they both have the wep key and essid. I connect to a Asuswl500g WAP with wep encryption just to start.
When I try to bring up any of those wifi interfaces I get this error :

After my battery died for my netbook and the computer was shutdown compulsorily, then after rebooting I don't have network any more.Then I tried to restart network service which gives me the following errors

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI hope I am not repeating a thread. I am trying something very simple: To remotely connect from a ubuntu desktop to another ubuntu server (physically not reachable). When I ping the server, it seems to be fine. However, when I try to ssh, the connection is closed by the host. I am the only one using the server. It worked fine a few hours ago and I was trying to copy a lot of data using a couple of scp sessions. At some point the connection was closed and I cannot access the server anymore.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm only partially new to Linux. I'm running Fedora 11. I've just set up two machines, I thought to be identical. Evidently I missed something. I had some problems getting the network started on the second machine, and I must have forgotten a name change somewhere. Anyway, after doing lot's of comparisons between the boxes, editing and renaming and re-linking the ifcfg-GigaStorey file, they are both functioning. The problem is that whenever I start or restart the network on box 2, it reports the following error:
Bringing up interface GigaStorey: RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Error adding address 192.168.1.6 for eth0.
[ OK ]
The file ifcfg-GigaStorey is linked in the following directories
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices
code....
Like I said, it's not super critical, just annoying. The networking comes up ok, but the error is puzzling. I figure if I learn what this problem is I'll be one step closer to my Linux beanee.

For this I am using vsftpd and the default linux ftp client to check the behavior.I was trying the following things. Was Trying to download a file from an FTP server using the FTP client as anonymous user. While the file is getting downloaded, I removed the network cable from the FTP server to understand the behavior of TCP when the server becomes unreachable.
As per the functionality of TCP/IP , when the server becomes unreachable for whatever reason , the client tries retransmitting the data till it can send the data or it timeouts. But in my above experiment using FTP , I can see that the FTP client is not trying to retransmit data at all . This I came to know using by sniffing FTP traffic at the client side. Is this expected or default FTP client available in Linux does not obey TCP/IP functionality properly ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe are having two DNS servers working as master and slave in our DMZ network subnet.DMZ network consist other servers also, but only the DNS servers intermittently becomes unreachable (no ping response) from different subnets whereas the internal communication (within subnet) happens at that time.From the DNS server we are unable to ping gateway ip also when the issue arises.We tried changing the port where DNS servers connected in DMZ switch and even reformatted the OS and reconfigured DNS but nothing seems to be working.We even tried changing the IP address of the server but after few days the New IP Address also gets affected
We google around a lot tying to fix the issue but no solution has yet come up.We are not even sure whether it is server issue or a network issue.
I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?

For extra fun using the wrong password a couple of times in a row causes the users account to be locked.Network manager automatically stores and reuses the password, with the net result that it is constant getting my account locked.Is there some way to prevent it from storing my password for that network?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently rebuilt my RHEL 5.3 system using MONDO onto differnt hardware. The tool worked GREAT on my 32 bit system. The only problem I am having now is that since this system was built as a clone of another system on different hardware, it copied over the network definitions as well. Not good!!! So although my system is up, I can't get it on the network because it still wants to use the original NIC's that were on the other system. How can I blow away all network hardware definitions and tell the system to go out and re-discover so that I can configure them with the nessasary network information.

1. System-->Administration-->Add/Remove Software
2. I type 'eclipse' in the seach box and hit 'Find'.
3. From the list of packages available I select 'Eclipse C/C++ Development Tools (CDT) plugin.
3. When I hit 'Apply' I get an error message saying 'No Network connection available' The 'more deatils' tells me: 'Cannot install when offline'
But my computer IS online. I have internet access etc.
I just want to know one thing. I had stop the network service in ubuntu, still i can able to ping google.com.what u think might be things to consider. these are the outputs see.

I have installed CentOs as server and trying to run .exe(dos program) there. i have already installed dosbox and works on running the program. But the problem is how can i run that on network (i use windowsXp)? i store the program and data on CentOs server and the client program runs directly on server (client just create shortcut to network path). I misassumed if we install dosbox on centos it can work, but it didnt for network

This is a small job in the first step. I need to hook up 3 computers together such that they all communicate with a central computer (server). The users will have to log on to their accounts and run their work from the central server, be able to run applications (vlsi, CAD) stuff from the server. I (as root) should be able to take backups (using crontab I guess) and be able to create new users, administer.
Can anyone direct me to a manual or a website or a previous post that goes through these steps. I searched the forums and was lost in my effort
I only have used Linux on a standalone PC and have never networked before.
I am struggling to get dd to restore a disk image across a network. I imaged a hard drive using dd to an external drive but no longer have that drive. The image file itself is on another machine and the only drives I have are the single internal drives of each machine so I am trying to run the command over the network

The permissions on /dev/sda appear to be correct - root has rw access. I assume the problem is that the credentials for the remote account "user" are being used for "dd". Is this a syntax problem or do I have to change the permissions on sda to give write access to everyone? I don't know if changing the permissions affects only the running Linux or if anything is written to disk so I'd prefer not to make changes until I'm sure I'll be able to restore the image.
