Networking :: Server Is Not Reachable Or Running Slow
Aug 28, 2010
I have a remote machine on which my server application runs. The remote server is linux based. What and all steps I would required do to IDENTIFY and SOLVE for following two problems
A question that I've asked myself (and google) many times but never got to an answer.Scenario:ServerA) postfix Primary MXServerB) postfix Backup MXAccording to the rfc a source mailserver can decide where to send email e.g.send an email to backup even is primary is reachable up and running. So my questions are: 1) how do I (live I mean) replicate messages arrived on any server to the other?2) How do I synchronise sent messages, message deletion, folder creation/deletion.Imapsync goes half way towards the solution but it needs to be run manually one off and you must specify source and destination. All I wanted really is a user to be able to use either server without having to worry about primary/secondary or what so ever.

Was trying to understand the behavior of TCP when the server becomes unreachable . For this I am using vsftpd and the default linux ftp client to check the behavior.I was trying the following things. Was Trying to download a file from an FTP server using the FTP client as anonymous user. While the file is getting downloaded, I removed the network cable from the FTP server to understand the behavior of TCP when the server becomes unreachable.
As per the functionality of TCP/IP , when the server becomes unreachable for whatever reason , the client tries retransmitting the data till it can send the data or it timeouts. But in my above experiment using FTP , I can see that the FTP client is not trying to retransmit data at all . This I came to know using by sniffing FTP traffic at the client side. Is this expected or default FTP client available in Linux does not obey TCP/IP functionality properly ?
I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).
During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response. Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.
We are having two DNS servers working as master and slave in our DMZ network subnet.DMZ network consist other servers also, but only the DNS servers intermittently becomes unreachable (no ping response) from different subnets whereas the internal communication (within subnet) happens at that time. From the DNS server we are unable to ping gateway ip also when the issue arises. We tried changing the port where DNS servers connected in DMZ switch and even reformatted the OS and reconfigured DNS but nothing seems to be working. We even tried changing the IP address of the server but after few days the New IP Address also gets affected
We google around a lot tying to fix the issue but no solution has yet come up.We are not even sure whether it is server issue or a network issue.
I have two machines, one used as client and the other as server. I want to check if the port 7080 on server reachable from the client machine. How can I do that? Using telnet?
my computer ran on windows now is duel boot runs fine with vista internet wise (wireless) but ubuntu is very slow just like a lo of people are saying but just now i thought i will hook it up wired to modem and it is not any faster at all very confused and dont know where to go or what to do
I dont even know where to start looking on Google.Just in case this matters, for completeness.I've an inactive eth0 (wired ethernet link) with static IP.Other possibly relevant details:I'm using an old 802.11b card. Cant imagine this is relevant, because the internet is working fine as far as pinging anything outside the local network goes.
I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.1. I notice that when my server gets slow and the load goes up, there is a bunch of processes call mi_dmonq running. Does anyone know what this process does? I tried to find it online but didn't find anything. Also, I tried to find the binary on the server but find doesn't return anything. Does anyone know what it is?
i don't understand what I am doing wrong. I started a CentOS Vm through Vmware server 1.05 When I run the machine I preform Dhclient and my machine gets an IP internet works fine.
When I change my IP to static everything stops working I cant ping anything anymore I cant ping my server I cant ping my gateway I cant ping google My config is done through Webmin but I know it can also be done through /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 My hosts file has this
127.0.0.1 localhost srvspam my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file has this BOOTPROTO=none NAME="" MACADDR="" HWADDR=00:0C:29:59:91:DE
I recently got my D-Link DWA-556 pci card working with my new desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Connection speed is good, but local network file transfer speeds are pitiful. I'm trying to copy some files from my laptop(also running 10.04) and I'm getting around 300-500 kb/s, which is actually lower than my typical download speeds. Anyone know what the problem might be? output of iwconfig is this:
Running CentOS 5 x64 And today my httpd is running very slow and I can't find a fix. Looked all over different forums
When starting httpd I get the message: /var/lock/subsys/httpd': No space left on device I checked that directory above and there is no file called httpd tried rebooting server
Can't do updates too: [root@u15438957 ~]# yum update Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities rpmdb: unable to join the environment
I had a F14 samba server working flawlessly now for a quite time. Unexpectedly about a month ago the write speed slowed down around 64kbit/s and that's really slow. I haven't changed any configs, only updated the server. I've troubleshooted this from many angles: -It is not a network issue because sftp writes are good. -It is not a RAID1 issue because write speed from another directory (locally) are good. So basically samba is the only thing left.
Here's example from smb.conf: [MyShare] comment = My share path = /mnt/RAID_share writeable = yes browseable = yes writelist = +smbuser
Here's a snip from logs today: [2011/08/04 09:04:27.509273, 1] smbd/server.c:267(remove_child_pid) Scheduled cleanup of brl and lock database after unclean shutdown [2011/08/04 09:04:47.526336, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn) Cleaning up brl and lock database after unclean shutdown [2011/08/04 09:17:57.634660, 1] smbd/server.c:267(remove_child_pid) Scheduled cleanup of brl and lock database after unclean shutdown [2011/08/04 09:18:17.635196, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn) Cleaning up brl and lock database after unclean shutdown .....
I'm trying to set up a fileserver on my 10.04 machine, and access the files from Windows 7 via wifi. I can see everything alright, but the transfer speed to Windows never gets higher than 70KBps. Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.
This is a recent problem, and I can't pinpoint any change/upgrade that would cause this. Rsync transfer from Client to Server: sent 11756196 bytes received 1032741 bytes 138258.78 bytes/sec total size is 144333466390 speedup is 11285.81 Pinging back and forth from each machine is fine. No Ifconfig errors Client, but Server has RX packet errors.
When i try to copy files from my samba server (Ubuntu 9.10) to my windows seven media center, the speed is extremely slow. So slow that is better to download 100mb file from the internet, than from my lan. And on my lan, every card and switch is at 1000 mbps speeds on cat5 cables. And from XP or other linux machine
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on an Asus EEE 901. I am going to be running this as a mail server and web server (light usage!). As I will only be connecting in by SSH I want to be able to manage the network connections via the terminal/command line. I am using primarily the wired interface but want to have the wireless connected as well incase (WPA encryption). Am I missing something when I can not find config files for nm-applet? What's my best way of doing this?
I cannot understand why a NFS server is so hard to get running..i tried everything.. googled and searched the forums to find guides and HowTo's but none of the works all i want is the server sharing /media (and all subfolders)everyone with access to the server from my should be able to mount the shares and use have all permissions on the shares..Now when i try the above guide, i can mount the share on the client but the subfolders are empty.
I have a single CentOS server with two separate NIC's. I was asked to install an internal Wiki on Apache but have that dedicated to one NIC so it's internal only. Then have just a site running on Apache on the 2nd NIC which is externally accessible. I have never done anything like this and would like tonow how difficult this would be on a single stand alone server that I have above?
Ive just installed ubuntu 9.10 64bit os from 32bit on 32bit i had no problems with it running quite fast.Since 64bit has gone on everything i do is running slower update manager took 2 hours to download 202 updates in 32bit that would have taken less than 2 minutes i net is Virgin media 54 Mbs so i can count that out always super fast on 32bit.There is also a lag when opening files and folders and loading programs even in software centre surely it should be quicker than this . Everything works skype ..... ( vids work but cant pause or adjust vol on player).
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10, replacing Windows 7.
its running a little slower than I hoped it would, loading movies takes a while, and when i switch to full screen, it takes about 5 seconds to catch up.
im suspicious that my video card driver might not be configured correctly. can anyone tell me what I might need to configure to get things running smoother?
other things on the computer are also running slow, like opening Firefox, it takes a while for the window to appear.
I'm running 9.1 Karmic Koala UNR and recently (over the last week or two) the system has been running somewhat slowly. The boot is still lightning fast, but opening up programs takes a second or two, it can sometimes take a second or two for menu's to respond to mouse overs.
I've noticed the problems in applications as well. Streaming media over firefox (and I have a 40GB landline, I don't do lag) appears jerky as if skipping a frame or two while sound carries on almost as normal.
Netbeans (I have crash issues at the moment) also runs slowly, alt-tab takes a few seconds longer than every other program.
General Windows are just slow to load (one to three seconds) and menu's take a while to appear (2-3 seconds on mouseover or click)
Usually Ubuntu is lightning fast, I by no means have top of the range laptop...sacrifices have to be made... it's a simple Acer notebook.
Now that I'm on Ubuntu, I love the look of it. Navigating the OS menus is fast and programs are generally fast once they're running, but they're extremely slow when first opened (basic programs like Firefox, OpenOffice Writer, etc.). Is this because I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB stick? I don't know if I'd make the full switch if programs typically open this slow, but otherwise I love Ubuntu.
I currently have 10.04 desktop version installed on my desktop. However my firefox seems to be running extremely slow. Can anyone guide me on the way of checking the system. Mostly is there a command that I can run that will kill all my unwanted processes. I do not do a whole lot on this desktop besides ssh and telnet to other devices and use firefox.
I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs:
Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 512MB Nvidia 8600GT video Realtek HD audio
What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI.
I installed 10.04 on a Dell Vostro Laptop, under Windows. After 15-30 min, the system begins to slow down and then grind to an almost halt. The resource manager tells me that I am using approx. 30% of my CPU and about 25% of my memory. The slow down occurs if I open min. (1-2) apps or more. Also, I can not track it to occurring after I use a specific app. The only non-standard item I installed was a Broadcom wireless driver.
My Toshiba Satellite Pro SP2100 with Ubuntu 8.04 all of a sudden is running very very slow taking ages to boot and is unstable. Some functions will not work at all and when typing the letters appear some time after they are typed. Nothing was downloaded or anything different it was being used just as it has been for more than two years. It has 512 ram. I tried the Mem test and after running for more than 12 hours showed no problems. I did a re-install no better, I tried to load Nimble X but it would not load and it has in the past, tried a Intrepid and it took hours to load but no good.
