Fedora Networking :: RTNETLINK Answers: Operation Not Possible Due To RF-Kill
Aug 27, 2010
After my battery died for my netbook and the computer was shutdown compulsorily, then after rebooting I don't have network any more. Then I tried to restart network service which gives me the following errors
Quote:
RTNETLINK answers: Operation not possible due to RF-Kill
RTNETLINK answers: Network is down
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
For both loopback and eth0 interface. What should I do to rectify the problem because I am stucked; and I am running fedora FC13 (recently installed yesterday).

I'm only partially new to Linux. I'm running Fedora 11. I've just set up two machines, I thought to be identical. Evidently I missed something. I had some problems getting the network started on the second machine, and I must have forgotten a name change somewhere. Anyway, after doing lot's of comparisons between the boxes, editing and renaming and re-linking the ifcfg-GigaStorey file, they are both functioning. The problem is that whenever I start or restart the network on box 2, it reports the following error:
Bringing up interface GigaStorey: RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Error adding address 192.168.1.6 for eth0.
[ OK ]
The file ifcfg-GigaStorey is linked in the following directories
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices
code....
Like I said, it's not super critical, just annoying. The networking comes up ok, but the error is puzzling. I figure if I learn what this problem is I'll be one step closer to my Linux beanee.

I have a troubling networking situation that is compounded by the system being remote without any out-of-band mgmt in place nor a serial connection - but am relying on a coworker entering commands into the terminal for me, or doing stuff in the GUI I have an FC12 i386 install running, that was up and stable for 6 days. Primarily this was only being used for a deployment of nTop. Up through Monday evening, I was connecting to the system (in NY) via VNC (here in SF), and was successfully watching nTop do its thing.
Tuesday morning, I go to connect to SSH and I can't get in. The NAT translation is still in place on the firewall, but there is no connection to the NIC/eth0 from the router. This is what I've had my coworker run:
[code]...
I was going to try and have her run the /sbin/mii-tool eth0 tomorrow a.m. just to verify that the interface isn't physically bad? But this is a brand new desktop, and I can't for the life of me understand why this interface went down. I also have the internal IP on a DHCP reservation, which is the same IP listed in IPADDR in the ifcfg-eth0 file - could this be a problem? should I remove the DHCP reservation? I did this so I could SSH to a public IP which I have NAT'd back to the internal 10.0.x.x address I had my coworker take a look at the GUI, and the eth0 properties are "inactive" and the "Activate|Deactivate" buttons are greyed out.I suppose I can have my coworker grab the /var/log/messages and copy to a USB drive, then email me that from another workstation.

I have a laptop Compaq cq60 and once I installed opensuse 11.1 64 with a Atheros AR5001 wifi card (pci). It worked and connected to several wap at home and abroad with no problem. I upgrade the laptop with a clean install to OpenSuSE 11.4 (also x86_64).Now when I try to bring the interface up a strange message appears. Moreover! I had the same problem with a Netgear usb wifi dongle!A Realtek completely different chipset. Before the problems a small explanation of the setup.
The module for the Atheros is loaded with no problems.I already tested rmmod ath5k and rmmod ath and then modprobe ath5k ... no problems whatsoever. The same happens for the NetGear usb wifi dongle! It is immediately recognized as soon as the module is inserted and the module loaded.I also checked this with lsudev and lshal ... I could not see any problems there ... I do not use NetworkManager as my experience tells me it is better to first configure on cli and then move to the graphical interface when things are working conveniently.
So both internal and usb wifi cards are detected and the respective modules loaded with no problems. They are both configured in yast to be activated manually and they both have the wep key and essid. I connect to a Asuswl500g WAP with wep encryption just to start.
When I try to bring up any of those wifi interfaces I get this error :
ifup wlan0
wlan0 device: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
wlan0 starting wpa_supplicant

I've been attempting to install GEANT4 (a physics simulation program thing) however, I keep running into an issue. I've attempted to find answers within GEANT Documentation, but this seems to be experienced often by users, but not addressed within their documentation. Anyways, when I try to build it says I have installation errors, and the only one I can find within the output is this:

I have 2 questions of which i can't find any answers to.
1) every time when i download something using lottanzb, lottanzb doesn't unpack the files automatically. It happens to every download. [URL]..0dselectie001p shows the full folder where files are downloaded in.[URL]..shows what happens to the par2 files.I don't know what is going on and why lottanzb is doing all this.
2)I have a external disk divided in 3 partitions. 1 partition is a partition for my email program (Icedove) whit all the necessary files. Since a few days i noticed that i first have to access the external disk and/or partitions before it is "active". I.e.: when my pc is started up and i start Icedove, i don't see my mail and all the (sub)folders i created (all the mail is on a partition on the external drive). But when i first access the partition containing all the mails and then start Icedove, then i see all my mails and (sub)folders.

the process is mcelog. When I do as root kill -9 2323 which is pid of mcelog the process is not killed. I tried doing the same from top, press K and enter pid of mcelog. doing ps auwx | grep mcelog I see there are several results. I tried killing all of them like kill -9 2355 2341 3425 2345. But re-running the above commands still shows them as running. How else would I troubleshoot this to avoid restarting of the box.

I have registered 2 nameservers running bind for a certain domain. The log file of my domain name provider (SWITCH) shows the following warning:
Warning Der Name-Server ns.xxxxx.ch (nn.nn.nn.nn) beantwortet rekursive Anfragen.
In English that would be:
Warning: Name-Server ns.xxxxx.ch (nn.nn.nn.nn) answers recursive queries.
The NS triggering the warning is running openSUSE 10.2 and the other one 11.1. Both configuration files /etc/named.conf are equivalent (well, forwarders are different). There is no such warning for the NS with 11.1. When I add "recursion no;" to the options in /etc/named.conf the warning goes away, but FF or SeaMonkey running on the server no longer get their DNS requests resolved.

user that started using Ubunto 6 month ago and I have now also installed fedora 13 to see wich operation system I like best... I have 3 primary partitions 1 for windows 1 for fedora and 1 for ubuntohen I installed ubunto I had a LILO (linux loader) like program that made me choose between Ubunto and Windows at start up... after installing fedora it goes automaticaly to fedora w/o making me choose... I can still mount my win/ubunto partitions so I haven't messed up compleatly... how do I "restablish" the linux loader deamon so that I can choose freely between the 3 operation systems?
second... when I installed linux stupid windows killed my backup hard drive where there are a lot of valuable resarch data... so now I have a 6 gb "unalocated" partition that I would love to be able to recover.... I would appriciate if somone had the answers to my guestions... so fare I like fedora because it seems better organised than ubuntu though the difference between the two linux distrubitons are hardly notacable

I want to use a cron job to backup my files to my server. Now when I run the script manually, I get an error when backing up (something and sftp file being used or so). I only get this when I'm simultaneously connected to my server with sftp. So to be sure that this doesnt happen when I wont be there anymore to look at the log, I would like to know if there is a command to kill all sftp connections. I would put this command in the backup scrip cron uses.

Ever since I installed and started operating my FTP server, with a wired connection, my wireless connection to my computers has been going in and out a lot. My wireless connection is about a foot away from the router. Is it possible that the wired FTP server is pulling a lot of the internet signal away from my wireless setup?

I have described my issue in detail here: [URL] basically, I am having a mysql server which keeps piling up on it's unix domain socket connections.
here's a small example of netstat as it looks now (count about 80-100 connections paired with httpd):
Code:
Active UNIX domain sockets (servers and established)
Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node PID/Program name Path
unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 3521428 12429/mysqld /tmp/mysql.sock
[Code].....
This is indeed a mysql server issue as far as I managed to debug it but until a workaround/fix is found I need to have my server responsive and the first idea that comes to my mind is to somehow kill those stray connections. as described in the mysql topic mentioend above, killing from mysql will not work. I need to kill them from outside mysql. I have setup a crontab script to kill and restart the mysql server when it cannot connect and it runs every 5 min. however this only lead to mysql being down sooner rather than later because in many cases just kill -9 and then service start mysql does not do the job (it's either part of the same issue of mysql or another issue). basically I need to manually kill mysqld instances a bunch of times until it's ok, OR, if that doesn't work, stop everything that is using mysql, wait a few minutes, and then start mysql. so I ditched that script and now I am manually restarting mysql server every ~ 24 hours.
so basically it's a pain. if I were to kill the stray connections however, I will not have to bother every day with restarting mysql.

My USB ntfs external hard drive mounts fine when I plug it in and I can often copy files with no problems. However, I have some large folders on my machine (~10 GB with ~ 200,000 files) which begin to copy to the external drive but then stop with the error "Unsupportes operation while copying <filename>." The file currently being copied when this happens appears to be random. Does anyone know what the issue is and/or how to fix it?

This week I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a newly assembled PC. The hardware I am using is below.
My wife has a Macbook with built-in Wifi connected to our Linksys router. Previously, the connection would drop 0-2 times a day. She would turn off Wifi on her Macbook, turn it back on, and it would reconnect immediately.
Since getting my Ubuntu PC, these disconnections have become more frequent, every 30-90 minutes. They effect both computers simultaneously. And now, I MUST turn off Wifi on my Ubuntu box to regain the connection. Switching it off and on with the Mac doesn't help. Unplugging the router doesn't help. I have to run upstairs and uncheck "Enable Wireless" on the Ubuntu Network Manager outlet.
The connection doesn't seem to drop if the Ubuntu PC is sitting idle. But it can happen with web surfing, Samba file transfers, or torrent downloading.
I noticed that Encore has a linux driver for my card called RT2860. It looks very difficult to install. Ubuntu automatically uses RT2800. So I don't know if this could be a driver issue. Also, shouldn't my bit rate be more than 1Mb/s? Both the router and the card are 802.11n. Are the dmesg errors something to be concerned about?
Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop): Self-built Desktop. AMD Phenom, Gigabyte motherboard. Router Brand and Model: Linksys Wireless-N Broadband RouterWRT160Nv2. (I already updated the firmware to the most recent version)

I have installed Wine on my Fedora 14 and got Security alert.SELinux has prevented wine from performing an unsafe memory operation.SELinux denied an operation requested by wine-preloader, a program used to run Windows applications under Linux. This program is known to use an unsafe operation on system memory but so are a number of malware/exploit programs which masquerade as wine. If you were attempting to run a Windows program your only choices are to allow this operation and reduce your system security against such malware or to refrain from running Windows applications under Linux. If you were not attempting to run a Windows application this indicates you are likely being attacked by some for of malware or program trying to exploit your system for nefarious purposes. My concern is if i hide this attempt, it will not stop wine to from trying to do it, only hide security alerts. This alert is occurred already nearly 5000 times in last 30 min and counting. Wine server is using 10% CPU on this, so only to hide alerts is not a solution, isn't it?

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.
The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

Basically (in easy to understand steps): how do I download correctly the Kernel source to enable the driver make operation to proceed?

bind -r "C-u"

to erase the current binding for control-u, but after running any / all of the above, bind -p still tells me
"C-u": unix-line-discard
bind "C-u":kill-whole-line doesn't work either. How can I change the binding of control-u to kill-whole-line?
