I have forgotten my user password....HOWEVER I remembered the root password and am able, (after much fumbling about)to get into the machine. Is there a way of resetting my password? It obviously will not let me do so on the password-reset-screen as it requires the old password....

Debian Configuration :: Migrate The Users Without Resetting Their Passwords?

Aug 13, 2010

I have an old server running CentOS 5. The encription method used was the default MD5 for the shadow file. I would like to migrate the server to Debian Squeeze which uses SHA512. I have already copied the passwd, group and shadow file with the user accounts information but the Debian machine doesn't let the users login. I have already looked in the pam files to make it accept the MD5 encryption without any luck. how can i migrate the users without resetting their passwords?

Debian Hardware :: PavuControl Settings Keep Resetting After Reboot

Nov 19, 2015

I've just installed Debian 8 XFCE and I can't get the sound working properly after a reboot. I mean I can but it keeps resetting to default audio output (analog-stereo) after reboot.

I set it to Digital Stereo in Pavucontrol settings, reboot and here comes analog-stereo again.

I've tried setting digital stereo as default using pactl in the terminal but same problem. When I change settings then relog in my session, sound is working, but when I reboot it reverts back to default output. Strange.

Here's my sound card info :

lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)

In windows the path is:

How would I translate this into something ubuntu "follows?" I already have the profile name changed as well.

Debian :: Opera Browser New Repository Anywhere?

Mar 22, 2010

I've always used the repos at [URL] to get Opera both on Lenny and Squeeze.
So my sources.list has this line:
deb [URL] lenny non-free

But now I see these has not been updated since november 2009. Is there a newer repo somewhere? I know you can download opera from the opera website - but that is too much work when you have many computers to manage.

Debian Configuration :: Error In Opera Update From Repository

Jul 2, 2010

I've got Opera for Linux on my Debian Lenny system, installed by adding their repository to my APT config, and it works great. Just recently there was an update. When I downloaded it, it could not install because the signature could not be verified.

W: GPG error: [url] lenny Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY F9A2F76A9D1A0061

Why would that happen now when I already had the repository correctly setup in my apt files? I tried re-installing the key and that didn't change anything. Is there a problem with a public key server somewhere?

Debian :: Opera On Lenny Doesn't Recognize Hyperlinks

Mar 22, 2009

I've got a box running Etch which seems to have a bad memory controller (I get segmentation faults left, right and centre) so I've built a new 'puter with twice the CPU power (2.4Ghz Intel Q6600 vs Athlon 1000+) and four times the RAM (2Gig vs 512M). I downloaded Lenny three days ago and, apart from some screen resolution issues which I've been discussing in the Newbie forum, most things have been working just fine.

However, I downloaded Opera yesterday (opera_9.64.2480.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb - same version I've been using on the Etch box) and I've seen some strange behaviour. A lot of sites, this one for example, work as expected, but if I go to, for example, www.bbc.co.uk or www.guardian.co.uk, the hyperlinks don't work, the cursor doesn't change to a hand when I hover over the links and clicking over the links doesn't do anything. The same pages work normally using Opera on my Etch box so it seems to be an issue with Lenny, or maybe Gnome on Lenny (I have KDE on the Etch box).

Is there a way to crack the windows Administrator password in Linux (using the SAM file) WITHOUT resetting it?

Ok so Ive already got Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb bootstick. Chntpw is installed as well. What I'm wondering is are there any programs to crack as in decrypt the SAM file and show the password but not erase it? Most Linux programs Ive come across don't do this. They just reset the password.

Debian :: Sharing Firefox / Iceweasel Profile With Win 10.1

Apr 19, 2016

Is there something that has changed from Windows 10 to Windows 10.1?

So on my computers I have Linux/OSX + Windows

Typically I have housed the FF profile (and TB for that matter) on the NTFS partition. This has worked for many years and so no matter which OS I load, I start of at the same place I ended.

But since I installed Win 10.1, I don't use Windows that often, but when I do I feel that for some reason, FF is not picking up the profile info. Add-ons are missing. Session restore not the same. (There are similar issues with TB as well).

Is that too obvious?

Debian :: Launch X-terminal-emulator With Profile?

Dec 31, 2009

I'm trying to launch a root terminal with a profile preloaded, but I'm not yet used to the way gnome handles its syntax, so the default link to root terminal has me confused:

Code:

gksu -D Terminal -- env -u ORBIT_SOCKETDIR /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator

Apparently, the method using gnome-terminal is to add a trailing

Code:

--window-with-profile=PROFILENAME

but this did not work, probably because in this case I'm not calling directly on gnome's terminal.

General :: Internet Timeout Issues After Resetting Password - Or A Heck Of A Coincidence

Nov 11, 2009

Owned linux laptop (running UBUNTU) for 1.5 yrs. Love it. No problems... until:

1. I changed my password, via System - Admin - User & Groups - Properties. (I just typed 2 characters on the end of the old User Password and the Confirmation password and OK'd it all.
2. Shut down laptop. Upon restarting it (only minutes later), neither the new pw or the old one worked.
3. Googled for help on another machine. Booted linux laptop up in recovery mode and used the passwd <?> command to reset pw (back to the original one!).
4. Shut down. Started laptop up again... forever more firefox runs like a dog. Normally (90% of the time) it times out before reaching a page, though it is trying to transfer the data.

Let's be clear about this. It was fine. The very next time I used firefox - minutes after the password debarcle, it was cac, and has remained cac ever since.

I've been whizzing around on firefox for over a year without any issues. There have been no changes to the router. My microsoft laptop has no issue with the internet so it cant be router or telco related. Though I did reset the router (power and phone line) just to be sure. It didn't help.

I clear the private data (Tools menu) in firefox regularly (daily-ish). That is the only housekeeping I do on this machine. (It only gets used for mail, internet and the odd simple OpenOffice document). There is stacks of space left (70 Gig). I'm not sure how to check memory.

Googled for help and tried some command to purge temp files. That didn't help.

I love my linux laptop, but currently I'm having to resort back to my windows one.

Debian :: Why Doesn't Profile Load At Login With Lightdm

Apr 14, 2016

I have Debian 8.4.0 with lightdm. I'm trying to load some command lines at session startup, putting these in ~/.profile but the file is not loaded. The same procedure works well if I switch lightdm to gdm3.

Anyway, there is some idea to load some script lines at the session startup? The file .bash_profile neither works. I don't want to use ~/.bashrc because it would load every time I open a terminal. Neither to use init.d because it would load for all users.

Debian :: Creating New Profiles Based On Existing Profile In Gnome

Oct 8, 2010

I'm setting up my profile in gnome right now, with things like fonts, themes, wallpapers, iceweasel settings, menu settings, and I'm going to be adding a couple new users. Rather than re-do everything again, I thought I'd just create the new user, copy over my home dir, chown it to the new user and then login to make minor final adjustments, like specifiying where the music dir is and such.Just wondering if there'd be any problems with this, since it's just an idea I think should work but have never tried it. Any experience, or warnings?

Debian Multimedia :: Iceweasel Segfaults Even In Safemode After Profile Reset

Nov 7, 2015

Starting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.

So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.

A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.

Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?

If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?

The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.

After upgrade to Opera 10.60 on my Gentoo Linux it stopped reading fonts.conf all of a sudden and now I am not happy with how Arial bold looks in non-Latin letters. Particularly bold cyrillic "м" letter looks almost as black square when Arial is used.I want to tell opera not to use Arial at all, there are plenty ofreplacements: Liberation fonts, Droid, etc. I found stylesheets, but not sure how to write statement which prescribes not to use Arial in web pages.I know that there is "not" selector in CSS v3, but could not make a valid statement out of it.
