General :: Resetting Password And Adding Users - For Acer Aspire One
Aug 27, 2009
I have no fracking clue what my password is and I want to create multiple user accounts. I have no idea whether or not I need to re-install the OS or what..nor can I even begin to imagine how to do so without a CD drive..I should also note I didn't start her up myself.
I am using Mandriva 2010.2 KDE. When I try to change my password, using the Welcome>About Me>Change Password, I am asked to type in my current password, after I press OK, the dialogue box just seems to hang, nothing happens, the computer does not freeze, just the password dialogue box kind of stops responding.
i bought an Acer aspire one through an official acer website and i got it for cheaper than a XP one, i got it with Linux on it. As i am someone that looks for a great deal. i took it, I then realized that Linux is pretty hard to operate.can i replace linux with window?
I have a problem with certain web sites, mainly BBC when the page just disappears and it just reverts to my desktop.I tried installing more up to date version of Firefox but it keeps on happening- mainly it seems when BBC site has fancy graphics.
I have an aa1 with the original set up but fire fox is to old for some sites how can I instal a new vertion Sorry, its is an acer aspire 1 with linpus, I think, it comes pre installed with fire fox but an old version.
my aspire one netbook which uses linux will not start. when i press the power button, it starts booting then will just give me a blank screen. my problem is that i dont know my system user password so can go into setup.
i have lost internet on acer aspire one when i tried to add firefox 3.6 and cannot solve the problem.....i have tried several times and nothing works, it tells me it either failed or is unknown..... i can't even get back to firefox 2....everything was ok until i added adobe flashplayer and when i rebooted to make it work there was no internet at all and it's my sisters netbook not mine.
My laptop connects fine wirelessly but when I try connecting with the cable it won't connect. I have tried an identical laptop and that connects fine so it must be the laptop but I don't know why.
The acer netbook D255e - N57 comes with a factory installed linux OS but Acer reps seem unable to fully instal Ubuntu 10.1 or 10.04. Even linux lite lacked the drivers to run several things. Is it possible to do this??? If it can be fully installed I will definitely go for a new cyber life with linux but if not I may have to remain a thrall to bill gates and go for a Eee PC netbook instead.
I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook that has lost connection with the Internet. On clicking the Browser button I get a message saying "Your wired device is now connected" - but nothing happens. It was working fine up till about a week ago. A substituted computer will work OK from the same output from the Router/ Modem through the same cable.
Package gnome-bluetooth-2.28.6-2.fc12.i686 already installed and latest version so that's done.I'm certain I have a bluetooth adapter inside my laptop, however when I go to System > Preferences > Bluetooth, the started program says there are no bleutooth devices. There is a hardware button with the bluetooth symbol.
However :

I bought a Acer Aspire One A110-Ab Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite version, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 8GB NAND Flash
Just for openers, I don't understand how you "open" (?) "load" (?).EXE files or make them happen.I have been using Windows all my life & to remember you just CLICK on a .exe file and it just 'happens'
Specifically, I am in Turkey and had to purchase a dongle from a Turkish phone company to access the Internet. When I insert the dongle, it shows the relevant .EXE file but when I click on it, nothing happens. No-one here knows LINUX.
I just one to talk to someone who has the same ACER as me and who can guide me through with GREATED simplicity (really idiot instructions would be fine).
The driver is installed when I installed Ubuntu 10.10 it asked me to install this. Is not a problem of driver I think. It is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312
I found out the following: 1. I tried rfkill unblock all with negative results 2. rfkill list phy0: Wireless LAN, Soft blocked: no, Hard blocked: yes 3. look in the file system: NetworkingEnabled=true, WirelessEnabled=false, WWANEnabled=true
Is this really not supported by Ubuntu ?? username: melfrimarlyne e-mail: ferris@sowerseed.aw
I bought a ChemBook laptop which I have installed Ubuntu Linux on. It has an AMI BIOS. There is a password on the BIOS so I can not change its configuration. The laptop does not have a 3.5inch floppy. How do I reset or remove the BIOS password so I can access it and make my own changes and set up my own password?
I powered up the acer aspire one zg5 and it goes to the first screen but does not connect to the internet when I press the internet button the wifi connection is fine and will download updates fine but will not connect to the browser, am so out of my depth as not familiar with this system , if I dont fix this will have to blame one of the kids.
I haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!
no internal record or web cam, hence no phone capability either with Skype. Acer will have zero warranty conversations due to OS system change. Previously the machine was crashing mostly while using Open Office
my old firefox is obsolete. I've downloaded 3.6, successfully as far as I can see, but it's just sitting there on the hard drive as a file, it doesn't start up, I just get the same old version 2 which came with the machine and it's dead in the water really.
I currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).
I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with
/boot on 100MB /sda5 Swap on 1GB /sda6 / on the 40GB+ /sda7
When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.
My sd slot is not working at all, doesn't recognize it. I think it may have something to do with having the desktop version installed but I could be wrong. I was only introduced to linux 4 weeks ago and am not very familiar with it, but already know I like it more than windows! I have tried three different sd cards and they all work in my other laptop with Windows 7.
I have finally had a enough of windows and i want to change my laptop to linux, firstly what is the best distro that people recommend, i am trying to decide between ubuntu, fedora, mandriva and ultimate.
Secondly how do i go about installing all the drivers on a acer aspire 5920G laptop, and where can i download these from?
I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.
I recently acquired an Acer Aspire 7741Z-5731. I've tried to install Kubuntu and Ubuntu 10.10 - both give me problems with video and sound. I have researched this without finding a definitive answer that works. On the video issue - both Kubuntu and Ubuntu boot and work fine on the the USB Drive. When installed however - both just boot to a black screen prompt. Neither address the soundcard that came with the Acer - both show "dummy output" under the gui interface for changing sound settings.
On Linux Mint KDE - installs fine - just not able to get sound - same as above - only "dummy output" is available in the gui. I've tried reading the Ubuntu and Kubuntu posts at their forums. The problem is that when I start messing around in terminal - I don't get the same results that the posts indicate. I do know that ALSA is not installed by default in any one of the three distros I'm working with. I tried installing it from the terminal per the instructions I found on several linux forums - no luck however.
Why am I having such a problem getting Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint to load "out of the box" so to speak on a somewhat standard laptop? OpenSuse worked flawlessly - I just don't like it as much as the Ubuntu derrivatives. I suspect that Debian may also work "out of the box" without issues. I am even considering Mandriva. As a newbie to linux, I find it extremely frustrating that I cant just install the software and have it work without having to do a bunch of stuff in a terminal window that I either don't fully understand, or that doesn't produce the expected results. Is this what a new user can anticipate when they opt to try and learn linux - a bunch of command line hooo - ya ? Anyone have any suggestions on how to get any of these to load on my Acer Aspire 7741Z-5731? It really should not be this difficult or frustrating to get a distro that is touted as "the most popular" to install and work right off the USB or CD/DVD install. It is seemingly easy to understand why Linux has not yet become a windows or mac killer. There should be a website for linux that can determine what drivers you need and automatically install them so for the user so that the command line can be ignored by the new user.
I'm a linux newbie so go easy on me with technical terms.I've got a Acer Aspire One ZG5. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.
I have been using my Acer Aspire One Netbook, with Linux Lite v1.0.13.E as loaded on purchase, happily for a year or so. Yesterday, when I clicked on the Browser picture to open up Firefox, nothing happened. I can't find how to access anything which will let me check if the icon has lost a link. I have looked on the File Manager and can see the .mozilla folder but don't know what to look for, nor what to do from here.
I have now managed to add the sub-menu which was linked to here: [URL] as a way to Install apps. I can now use this directory to try and open Firefox Web Browser - I then get the message "Failed to execute default web browser Input/output error.
My landlord upstairs just got a new modem and WiFi by Clear.com and when trying to get the WiFi to work...it just wouldn't connect with my laptop. They have 2 computers upstairs, one laptop and one desktop that recognized the WiFi and don't have any trouble using it. Wondering if there is something I have accidently clicked or changed to make it not connect. It does not have an error message, it just does not connect completely.
I have an Acer Aspire 5742Z with an Intel HD Graphics card and if I connect an external monitor I have no troubles using RHELS 5, but nothing on my main laptop monitor.
