General :: Not Booting Correctly Into SuSE 10.3?

Feb 4, 2011

"Something" happened to my friend's computer, and now he somehow expects me to know how to fix it. Sigh. The symptoms: There are two partitions - a Windows XP partition and a larger partition for SuSE 10.3 it seems. He can boot into the Windows, but not into the SuSE anymore. However, he can boot using the Fail-safe method.

I know this is very vague. but I can't get to the computer at present to check things for myself. Do any of you know what a possible cause of these symptoms could be and how to fix the problem?

Ubuntu :: U11.04 Not Booting Correctly / Why Is So?

Jun 7, 2011

I have been using Ubuntu for about a month now. I have the latest version, 11.04. Today, I was watching and downloading movies on Miro and while I was watching, the screen froze and I couldn't get it back to normal. I manually shut down the computer and when I turned it back on it brought me to a page that reads code...

I do not know what to do from here or what the problem is, I was thinking maybe one of the movies I downloaded caused the problem because it happened right when I was downloading. Any help is appreciated, I really want to have my computer working again.

The NetworkManager program under KDE4 works fine and can connect to my home wireless network. However, The previous of NM cannot cannot connect to any wireless network.

I find it kind of odd, since KNetworkManager is just a frontend to the real NM, with was not actually changed when I downgraded.

Mar 26, 2010

After installing cpq_cciss-2.6.14-7.sles9.x86_64.rpm on HP DL385, the server did not boot at all. It was hanging on code...

The server was also hanging on Failsafe, Linux and HP-initrd-2.6.5-7.191-smp

So I decided to jumpstart the server with the disks installed as it was, but it was also hanging on:

Loading kernels sles9_amd64 initrd

When I installed the cpq_cciss-2.6.14-7.sles9.x86_64.rpm, the output is attached:

Slackware :: Lilo Not Booting Slackware Correctly - Errors Inside?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

0800 78150744 sda driver:sd
0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition
0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device

The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.4-KDE Udevd-work Error While Booting

Jun 25, 2011

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.

1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

SUSE / Novell :: Booting Stops At Setting Up CMOS Clock

Dec 7, 2008

The suse 10.0 64 bit partition on my box stops booting when it is setting up the cmos clock. The suse 10.0 32 bit partition boots up without a problem. I never had a problem with the suse 10.0 64 bit partition up until now. Is it possible to fix the problem using puppy linux and editing a configuration file? I do not think it is a hardware issue if the other partition on the drive boots up. Would puppy linux be a good way to backup files from this partition or can I mount the partition using the 32 bit os?

General :: How To Confirm Source Was Correctly Installed

Jul 6, 2011

I've installed CFEngine from source (for those of you who aren't familiar with the product, check out the wiki page) on an AIX server. I had some issues setting it up but finally got it to gmake successfully.

Once I run gmake install I get a very short output (based on other source builds) and no errors. I figure something is fishy and I now I need to figure out a good way to find if it was correctly installed. I tried:

find / -name cfeng* 2> /dev/null

Is there something analogous to rpm -qa | grep cfengine?

Here is a copy of my output in case anyone needs: [url]

General :: Encrypting External 4K Sector Drives Correctly

Jan 29, 2011

I've recently brought a Western Digital Elements 2TB external hard disk and have been planning to encrypt it for use as a backup drive. However, it seems that these 2TB disks use the new 4K sector sizes and thus need to be handled more carefully than the older 512K ones.

After spending a week looking on Google, I have to admit I'm pretty confused and hope somebody here might be able to verify my conclusions

The drive reports that it's a 512-sector drive which is probably false. Using fdisk -uc, the original partition starts at sector 2048 so I assume that is a valid sector also to start a dm-crypt partition overwriting the previous one?

I've also read that every layer that is added to these drives must support the 4k layer. That means both dm-crypt and the ext3 filesystem I intend to put it on have to do so also.

Looking through the cryptsetup document, it states under the option "--align-payload" the following:

"Align payload at a boundary of value 512-byte sectors. This option is relevant for luksFormat. If your block device lives on a RAID, it is useful to align the filesystem at full stripe boundaries so it can take advantage of the RAIDs geometry. See for instance the sunit and swidth options in the mkfs.xfs manual page. By default, the payload is aligned at an 8 sector (4096 byte) boundary."

The fact that the payload is aligned at 4096 seems to indicate to me that it should be fine using default settings. Does everybody agree with this? Or do I need to take special measures due to the dm-crypt headers?

When I later finish up the dm-crypt layer, then I need to put ext3 on it. I understand adding -b 4096 to the mkfs.ext3 command will resolve that. Is that also correct and will it work well in combination with the dm-crypt layer?
