I am using vim for opening and editing my source code, but the problem concerned japanese fonts is occurred. Japanese text can not be shown correctly (not japanese) by using vim.
View 5 RepliesActually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...
I have a problem with neither seems to be a problem with an image nor with firefox. I just don't see the following image with firefox (as an example): [URL] I have tried this with firefox versions 3.5.8, 3.6, 3.7a3pre in safe-mode, after clearing the cache etc. I can see the image with an other browser (e.g. opera) and also basic tools (like kview, gthumb etc) are no problem at all. My sysadmin updated the X-server for my CentOs 5.4 version without success. I am in contact with the firefox people, but no-one can reprpduce this problem. So it is likely that it is the operating system why I file this new thread.

I recently installed Xubuntu on an old eMac PPC using the mini CD. Everything went pretty smoothly, and the distro runs excellently except for the fonts, Abiword, Open office, and much of the notification system refuses to display almost any font. I've tried different window managers (XFCE, IceWM, Openbox, Fluxbox), but all have the same problem. I've tried reinstalling and have the same problem.

I CANNOT USE XeLaTeX!!! I use pstricks and the font must be available in plain TeX! Otherwise my document looks inconsistent!
Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.
If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.
A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.
Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.
Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.
I just reinstalled Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and an old problem has come back. For some reason I couldn't fix it even in my previous installation. The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got used to Ubuntu and was using Easy Peasy. I wanted to upgrade because I was having a few issues with EP on my EeePc 900- I went to 10.4.
I am leaving to go study abroad in Japan in about 10 days and have everything configured except the Japanese language aspect.
I went to System -> Admin -> Language Support and installed the language files, etc. After reboot, they are installed...but there is no language box or any hint at all that I can use it.
There doesn't appear to be a shortcut like ALT + SHIFT in Windows.
In the simplest terms possible (i.e. step by step), how can I be able to type Japanese in Office, Firefox, Evolution, IM, etc.?

I copied some xscreensavers into the screensavers folder which is in usr/applications/screensavers. Now when I go to my screensaver application, they don't show up at all. What should I do? I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy.

My squid configuration is based on a whitelist only basis.
Im trying to do a dynamic whitelist for squid, which allow URLs in the whitelist when the requested URL comes from a trusted search engine like www.kidrex.org. However, when i access www.example.com and tried and find www.kidrex.org on the referer column, i could not see www.example.com as the requested websites.
Any idea how to get pass this problem, else i would have a hard time building my whitelist, which is not dynamic at all
I have a headless server running Centos and I often login in remotely to administer it. I have passwordless login and sometimes run commands remotely via ssh from a client machine. I've tried to shut the server remotely but have come across a small problem. Here is the output of the command I use to shutdown :Code:unclec@linux-desktop $ ssh centos 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now 'PASSWORD : 123ABCAs passwordless login is set up I do not need to enter a password to ssh BUT as I am running sudo on the server I am asked to enter my centos unclec password and this is shown in clear text on my local machine terminal. Is there a way to prevent this or should I edit the sudoers file on centos so it does not ask me to enter the password when "sudoing" ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn all previous versions of KDE I had Console8x16 set as KDE font for all cases (Settings->Appearance->Fonts). After tonight upgrade, this (only!) font is not working. I can see it in font manager, I can set it in ...Appearance->Fonts, but actually remains default font. Two of about 30 attempts somehow (can not reproduce) succeeded to set "console 12" font, but it disappeared after restart.
1. What can be the problem in 4.4?
2. In /usr/share/fonts tere are 3 files named console8x16.pcf, console8x8.pcf and console9x15.pcf, but in the font list in Appearance->Fonts I can see only 2 - one named "Console" (seems to be 8x16 and "console" (8x8). File 9x15 does not appear at all. Why?
Last results of attempts: cannot use console font in part of areas, while part works OK. For example: kdevelop editor, kmail message body text works OK. But kmail other parts - does not. The most interesting is that although setting the kmail body message text to console displays the message body text correctly (with console font), but the example message in "Configure kmail" dialogue "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog" is displayed in the default font, as if there is no console font!
I am seeing a weird error in a font display. I see a small question mark next to a font that I am using as a simple graphic. Does this mean that some function call in xlib is being passed an invalid paramter?

Edit: I've just figured out how to do this. (All you have to do in install a Japanese font). The only problem is I can't seem how to figure out how to type using Romaji and have it convert to Kana automatically, rather than having it have a Japanese keyboard layout. For example, when I type "A", it should show up as ア, and when I enter "KA" it should show up as カ.
Yesterday my Japanese input on F11x64 broke horribly. I have been using iBus all along, and didn't think I did any upgrades, but maybe there was a restart that picked up something previous. As soon as I hit the key to turn on the input method to type Japanese there would be a python process using 100% cpu, but no keyboard input. After fiddling about reinstalling python, iBus, scim and anthy and anything I else I could think of, I decided to upgrade to F13 to see if it would fix it. (trying to use scim instead of iBus hung the machine during start-up after login (I'm using KDE too if that makes any difference)). I did an upgrade instead of a fresh install fyi...
F13 is no better, and has the same issues with the python process. I have tried reinstalling everything again, as well as trying to avoid scim altogether, and just running iBus and Anthy. (The only other issue that I can think of (that prompted the initial restart) was that my .xsession-errors file in my home directory became huge -> 1.7gb!) Japanese input is crucial to my work (It doesn't even work if the default language of the system is set to Japanese), so hope someone has some ideas on how to resolve this, or even just knowing tha japanese is working for someone on a x64 KDE install would be encouraging...

The only one I have found is xvkbd, but it is very limited and somewhat glitchy. I tried setting it to Japanese, but all that does is add a button to switch to japanese that you annoyingly have to hit every time you want to enter a character. And not only that, even though the keyboard is in hiragana, it inputs katakana. Are there any other options for a virtual Japanese keyboard, or at least a way to get xvkbd to input hiragana?

I went to languages in YaST and enabled Japanese as a second language, and I have tried adding japanese as a secondary keyboard layout under configure desktop-> regional and language settings. I have a little flag in the system tray that I can click to change from US to Japanese, but all that does is change what the punctuation buttons do.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running KDE 4.5.1 on Ubuntu and came to Ubuntu from Windows, On Windows they have a very sophisticated Input Method for typing foreign characters especially symbolic ones like Japanese.
I find that while Linux makes a lot of things so much easier than any other system, I have yet to figure out how to get any sort of input method running on Ubuntu (KDE Desktop).
It's important for me to be able to type hiragana, katakana, and kanji as I'm learning the Japanese language. I've browsed forums for about 2 weeks giving examples on Ibus, uuim, and some others but even though Ibus works a little buggy on Gnome I really need an alternative that's works well and with the KDE desktop.
Additionally, I have never seen any method (that did or didn't work) with installing Japanese font, everybody just said it was tricky.
I need to write in Japanese, I know that I have to use iBus, but I don't know where to find it. I only know that it is installed, do you know where can I find it? I'm using Fedora 15
