View 2 RepliesI've installed Linux Mint7 (Desktop PC, Dual booting with WinXP) and most of my 'system notification' sounds work fine, with the notable exception of the 'Shutdown' sound. (All I get are several 'beeps' from the PC speaker.)When I run Mint from a live CD, I don't have this problem at all.(I'm quite new to Linux and completely new to asking questions here, so apologies in advance, if I've left out any vital info.!)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed nVidia GT440 w/ NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run driver on my Scientific Linux on two of my workstation and one of workstation sound disappeared. Both workstations are identical though in terms of hardware and OS (Scientific Linux).
I'm not really sure where to look, but here is dmesg from workstation where sound isn't working:[URL]..whenever I go to System -> Preference -> Sound -> Output on broken workstation I only see "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and my old/onboard sound card is missing.
I actually did roll out of same Video Card to more then just 2 workstation, I did that to a 5. Only 2 of them sound working as expected. 1 of them didn't even needed to install nVidia drivers but that workstation running slightly newer OS version 6.1 instead of rest 6.0, so I'm back to where I started it ... clueless ;(
I'm not sure if this is a GRUB issue or a Ubuntu issue, so posting it here and hoping it's the right place.
I recently (ie, within the last few days) installed Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit on my system. When I rebooted, I got:
Grub loading...
error: out of disk
grub_rescue>
Searching on the error message, I found some different workarounds - commenting out "if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi" in /etc/grub.d/10_linux, and uncommenting "GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true" in /etc/default/grub - but neither worked. Not on their own and not together.
Following the instructions here, I get the 'error: out of disk', when I try to load the linux.mod (insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod).
I downloaded the super grub disk, and that worked. I can load up my system using that, but simply copying the boot commands from that can't be the ideal solution, can it?
I've been using Linux for about a week, now, and yesterday I finally got my audio to work. Before shutting-down yesterday, I installed some more audio-plugins. When I started-up my computer today, there were errors in the console-text that appears while the Debian Linux OS is loading. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out. So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I had several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer. I made some more changes in the application-download-manager-thingy and restarted and I no longer got the errors at boot-time.
Unfortunately, I still have absolutely no sound, and it appears as if ALSA is effectively dead. My soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I got Realtek to work yesterday with OSS.
Another problem is that WINE doesn't work, with the exception of WINE's default programs. I've been trying to get this thing to work for at least four days now, and I've made absolutely no progress...
Also, after fighting with it for a few days, I finally managed to get the internet to work, but Linux still thinks that I'm offline. It's really weird. This one's not so much of a problem as it is annoying. In addition, if I click-on the network-manager-thingy, it says that none of my connections have ever been used. Odd.
I installed Puppy Linux on a partition on an older 2000-era computer. The other partition had Windows ME, which crashed and burned recently. Lately, the computer has started to open GRUB very slowly. It is also slow to boot Puppy Linux from there. I reinstalled GRUB, to no avail. I decided that the problem was probably a slow BIOS, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of another possible problem, or of a good boot-disk BIOS diagnostic tool? I tried using a couple of the tools on the Ultimate Boot Disk, but they all got hung up, displaying: - InitDisk as the last line in the sequence.

so I recently got Vegastrike working after some toils with XTERM not loading. Now I purposefully changed the resolution too high so that the game would error out so that I could show you the sound bug. I do know that if I lower my resolution it will function, but I get no sound, no music, not even system beeps. I believe it's tied to one line of code, but being a total newb in linux I haven't figured out what I need to do to fix it.

I found somewhere that it was saying I had the wrong sound card when I have a realtek on my motherboard and it asked me to edit a file in the root directory, which I did, however it doesn't seem to help the issue. I'm totally stumped as to what the hell I need to do to get sound. Game looks amazing, but with no sound it's sorta worthless right at the moment.
I am having trouble loading my sound drivers after removing pulseaudio. (Yes, I did try and reinstall pulse, did it again with ALSA, no luck).
It appears that my sound drivers are not loaded, because cat /proc/asound/cards returns 'no soundcards' and aplay -l returns the same... the ouput was quite different before, I am sure I DO have soundcards and they did work before in Fedora 14.
Any Ideas how can I make the sound drivers load again ?
I am having issues with my sound..Sometimes when I boot up I get the following when I cat /proc/asound/cards
[digitolx@ssureshot-pc ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xd6000000 irq 225[code]....
This is wrong, now My audigy should be default with the UART (onboard) being secondary. I will be setting this up for my microphone / headset. Now if I restart I will get the following..
[digitolx@ssureshot-pc ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [CA0106 ]: CA0106 - CA0106
Audigy SE [SB0570] at 0xb000 irq 66
1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 10
I'm not sure about what is even loading With the NVidia for sound..Is there a way to default this to the second example?
My Compaq Presario F700 laptop has Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 (checking from my Windows partition). I had everything working just fine until yesterday when I attempted to manually install an alsa-linux package that I downloaded sometime ago. Although the .deb package failed to install, it seems it messed things up and now there's no sound. The speaker icon shows "All mute" and I have no clue how to fix this. How do I 'unmute' it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I am working on a friend's computer for which he "lost" the operating system. This friend has very little extra money right now, so my classmate suggested I try loading Linux on my friend's PC.I am wondering if it will work. The PC is a Compaq Presario SR5610F with an AMD processor. I have been told that Linux doesn't care much for AMD.Does anybody know if it will be possible to use Linux as an OS on this PC?I'm looking for a cheap(er) alternative than Windows. Friend is balking at Windows 7. The machine had Vista loaded in it when purchased, then the son loaded XP on it, without removing Vista. They have been having issues with crashing for some time now. The recovery disks are supposed to have XP on them, but I don't think that is so, and when I tried running those disks, the computer balked. I finally worked around and got XP to install, using a disk from an old computer, but the code would not work, and nobody could remember the computer's password and user name.I want to start fresh with this machine, and install a basic, working OS. Am leary about XP on eBay or some such, but they really don't have the funds to purchase anything over $100.00.

This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
