I can use my wireless at work but at home we just have a wired connection. I am unable to connect. I am using Girlfriends laptop at the moment. My comp is a compaq presario v6000.

I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
My laptop has been working fine with ubuntu 10.04, and earlier today it shut down after running out of battery. I came to use itr and discovered that the wifi icon had disappeared from the panel bar, and it won't connect to the wireless networkor via a wired connection.I have had a play around with this, tried ping -c5 google.comresult was:ping: unknown host google.comand ping -c5 4.2.2.1result: onnect:etwork is unreachable.I have other computers connecting to this network and know that it is working fine.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors

I then was unable to connect with a wired connection or wireless. I am sure this is a driver issue I just don't know how to get the proper drivers. If I put my mouse over the wireless icon it says networking disabled. But the switch to enable networking is on the keyboard

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu box, 11.04 x64, running on a Dual Opteron SFF box (iWill ZMaxDP... pretty old machine). Up until a few weeks ago, it was acting as a Windows 2008 Server, but i moved it to Ubuntu.
Anyway, the machine will not stay on the network for any amount of time, without falling off... I have changed network cards, cables, ports on the switch, etc, and nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 2003 box giving out DHCP addresses, and for a while, i actually tured that off and setup a second Ubuntu box to give IPs... it made no difference. The box gets an IP, and can ping outside for a bit (2 min or so) and then just looses connectivity... ifconfig shows it with an IP (i have tried both Static and DHCP config) and nothing seems to work...

I have a wireless connection to the internet, as well as a wired connection to a local network. When the wired connection to my local network is enabled, the wireless connection to the internet no longer works until I disconnect the ethernet cable.
(This setup used to work just fine when I was using Windows, but now doesn't seem to work. I wasn't using IP aliasing in Windows, but I am now, which may be causing the problem.)
My original connection to the internet was a wired one, at eth0, so once I got wireless enabled (on eth1), I created an IP alias to my local network of eth0:1 which is a static IP on my local network. The only configuration I did at all was to add a file named /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1, with the following contents:

And NetworkManager just seemed to pick it up automatically - I didn't change anything else in NetworkManager or anywhere else.
(Also I use 'service NetworkManager start/stop' entirely rather than 'service network start/stop' to manage my connnections. i.e. I did 'chkconfig network off' when setting everything up initially.)
Started using Fedora 13 from a liveUSB w/ persistent overlay. My netgear wg511 wireless card is not recognized, so I want to install ndiswrapper. Any tips for doing this, given my situation (liveUSB, no wired connection)? Or is there a work-around that doesn't involve ndiswrapper?

But I had problems with the flash player, so had to reinstall Ubuntu again. I am able to connect to Internet using wireless connection. But I need to connect to the wired connection. I am using Ubuntu 10. In my IPv4 settings, it is automatically set to DHCP, using which, I was earlier able to connect. But now it doesn't seem to be happening.
But there are other entries on the syslog that were recent.

View 4 Replies View Relatedim on node1 when i type the command ssh node2@ip the terminal hangs up a bit then an error message stating that connection timeout but here is a thing: i cant ping to node2
but i can terminate the ping manually using ctrl+c when i terminate the ping usual message appears stating 10 packets transmitted, 100% loss
ps: when i go to node3 and ssh to node2 it works fine and also i can ping from node3 to node2 very fine. and the firewalls are down at all nodes -all wired connection over a switch
The situation: The office has a WiFi network on one DSL line, which is used for our VoIP call center, and a wired network for our internal network and the majority of web surfing/traffic . Part of the office must be temperature controlled/monitored - we have a rather nice digital thermometer which is WiFi enabled.I have a Debian Wheezy box with a WiFi card and ethernet connection
What I'm trying to accomplish:Connect wifi enabled thermometer to WiFi network so it can automatically send temp updates (currently I have to do it manually via USB)Have the Wheezy box accept the downloaded file then send it to a back up server in the wired network
Side things that may be useful : Prefer to use wired connection for internet and apt and suchWiFi connection will really just be used for connecting to the thermometer

i am using ubuntu and with all versions i have one pretty anoying problem. My wired connection sometimes lost connection and i can't reconnect for 3-10min. sometime longer. Technically everything is allright. With win7 i never had such problems. Any solutions how to fix this problem? View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Vortexbox (fedora distro) installed on a laptop which I am using as a media server. I would have issues where I thought the laptop would go to sleep and disconnect itself from the internet. The computer boots in command line mode and what I would notice is that the screen would go blank and then I would have to go to the computer and jiggle the trackpad and it would wake up. I posted about it and got responses related to the gnome desktop which I could not find the files referred to in the answer.
I tried using setterm to keep the computer awake setting blank to 0 and powersave off. The same thing happens even with the monitor on and the screen display on. A gesture on the trackpad seems to wake the ethernet back up. Here's my old post: [URL]. Everything else about this situation is perfect. Vortexbox is easy to set up and it does everything I want, DLNA, streams to my squeezeboxes, etc, but this ethernet cutting out is exasperating.
I cannot Browse Even Internet is Active. Connected using Mobile Broadband using Samsung Mobile USB MODEM. (Modem is recognized Successfully and Connection Shown as active!) I cant browse or even use apt-get update in terminal.. no use. (Even I can see the Gprs icon in the Mobile Phone). I would like, if it's possible to connect them without using the Internet (I mean what I want it's not just communicate between them using SSH over the Internet, for instance, but also communicate without connecting to the Internet). My DSL connection it's 4 Mb/s while my router can work up to 100 Mb/s so I would like to take advantage of these 100 Mb/s to transfer files between the two computers instead of using 4 MB/s
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of reviving a legacy laptop using Vector Linux 6.0. Once past the x window issues associated with these old machines (and the SIS 630 chipset in general) the setup worked very well.
However, I have been unable to get the wired network working. Vector linux suggests eth0 is connected but I have no internet access in browsers or for slapt-get etc. The following is the process I have gone through so far (I am a convert to linux as of last month and networking isnt my forte so go easy!).

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

The installation of Debian wasn't originally on this system: it was on an older laptop whose motherboard fried, so I rescued the hard drive as well as the Debian installation. However, I doubt this should have anything to do with lspci not even detecting the wired eth controller.

Now, my internet connection is not working. I am connected to a router with DHCP. When I boot up with windows, everything works fine. Ubuntu says that I'm connected with a wired connection but I can't access anything on the internet.

I included wireless and wired, not sure it would help or not. After many Google searches on the subject I installed and setup Wicd. I am able to get a wired connection but not a wireless. I can see other networks, I am unable to connect to them though. Also when I installed Slackware I didn't setup the network. The Readme for Wicd said that having a network configured can mess it up. But is having no network set up worse. I know there is easier way to setup wireless networks, I just cant figure it out.
