I had some problems installing 10.04, which I'm not going into here unless I have to, but it appears to be up and running now except my PC can't access the network, even though it's wired. This is the first time I've tried putting on a new build by myself as my son always used to do it (my PC used to belong to him many years ago, and is old, like me.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, when I booted up, the wired connection was automatically detected and in use. Whenever I suspend my computer and then resume it later I lose the wired connection. It is detected (seen) by Networkmanager, but I can never connect. I found a way to restore the connection, but it is manual and I was wondering if I could automate this process every time I resume. After I updated ubuntu 10.04.3 and restarted my PC, something weired happend and my wired connection was completely lost. I tried different things but it seems that I have lost my ethernet connection. I only have ethernet card and the interface was set to eth0 which is not recognized anymore.
The /etc/network/interfaces includes the following commands, which btw I tried to play with a bit by commenting and uncommenting the lines but was not helpful (but this is the original one):

I installed Lucid a week ago and have been having a blast with it after a two year break from Ubuntu (been using Mandriva). So the other day I went to hibernate the system and it froze. I naturally did a hard reset and when I log back in, no network connection. That is to say, the system tray says it's connected but there is no LAN light on the router or network card. ifconfig shows it's connected too. When I boot into XP (cringes) it works just fine.
No specifics ATM but the card is a D-Link PCI with a Realtek R8***** chipset
I have installed Lucid in a new laptop. Things are running OK except for the following problem:
I connect to the network/Internet using Wired ethernet (TCP/IP) with static IP. Everytime I reboot/restart my network configurations are lost and I have to re-configure. I have googled this problem and have seen a few posts/bugs in launchpad etc. for what appears to be the same issue...but unfortunately I am not getting a clear solution to this problem.

I'm beyond frustrated.I booted into windows xp for the first time in at least a year today and connected fine.I booted into recovery mode -> then failsafe graphics mode , two times and had internet one of the times.I'm writing this from live cd.I have a feeling it is something super simple to fix but ...Here is my ifconfig -a from regular(not working network boot)

View 7 Replies View RelatedOkay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.
We had a power-out, which left my Ubuntu box off.
The modem & router is a friend's place, and it was rebooted. Both his boxes (Windows XP and 7) work fine.
but I can't get my box to hook back up. I've tried rebooting, unplugging cable to router from both ends (my box and router), rebooting his modem (Rogers' service) by turning off and on power supply for 3 minutes (as recommended by Rogers).
Once I got the Network-auto to show in the dropdown menu (I have a radio symbol on panel across top), but not again. I tried adding and editing a network connection (both wired and auto) but neither works, and if I boot unconnected they disappear.
The only thing I can get to show is a black box to the right on the desktop that has a red x and says Network Disconnected.
Me and friend are both frustrated as I don't want to interrupt his working use of internet to fix mine.
I have never understood how to connect to internet really, but it seemed to have solved itself in the past.
There is no password on the router, and we are not using wireless (which we never got to work).
The Rogers Modem is a "Motorola Surfboard" (Black).
The router is an Airlink 101 super-g wireless router.
My machine is a p4 motherboard with builtin ethernet socket on back.
My Ubuntu is I think Karmic 9.1
I'm trying to set up a wireless or wired network (wireless would be better...) to share my connection with my housemate, as well as with some devices. The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. Getting to the point: is there a way (maybe a standalone program, or some kind of plugin) to share a connection?

I have 2 workstations that I'm trying to network together so that I can backup each to the other. One is XP sp2 and the other Fedora 9. Since installing Samba on the Fedora box and trying to get it configured, I have a problem that Add/remove programs won't do installs because it says there's no connection to a network. Network Manager says there aren't any connections, but it worked before the Samba install. Mozilla and Thunderbird can access the internet OK. Both workstations are connected by cable to my router and thus to my ISP (DNS server).
Two questions:- where can I find hints on setting up a wired connection (which card's MAC address does it want? router or wrkstn?) and Am I right that Add/remove is stuffed because of Network Manager?I now have Samba working from Linux to XP, but still can't get into Linux from XP. I have had long term access to a networked HP Photosmart printer but now I get the following message:

when trying to access it.The ubuntu desktop is wired to the router as is the printer and another iMac wirelessly can still print to the HP. HPLIP status shows the icon for the printer but with a red x indicating no connection to it.The only recent network change was the removal of another router from our network. (service is DSL via a combo modem/router from service provider which previously was connected to a Dlink router which has now been removed from the chain b/c was redundant to the modem/router)
When there is a power failure at my university for about 30 minute, my computer stays up because of a UPS, but the switch it is connected to via ethernet is reset. After this, my machine loses network connectivity until I manually select the network using nm-applet.
In System -> Preferences -> Network Connections, the network has the "Connect automatically" box checked.
However, in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, there is a line that says:

Last night while setting up wired & wireless connection in openSuse 11.2 Gnome version via YAST's ifup, I got wireless but lost wired connection (interface eth0). Dmesg shows that eth0 became eth1. I cannot get eth0 back. Is there any way to remedy this situation, eg. get info from the Ubuntu partition in my triple-boot laptop, without having to re-install openSUSE?

There is no effect on wired computers. All but the one computer are windows (xp or vista). The affected wireless computers are not able to even find my wireless network. I have to reboot the router to get them online.

but i can terminate the ping manually using ctrl+c when i terminate the ping usual message appears stating 10 packets transmitted, 100% loss
ps: when i go to node3 and ssh to node2 it works fine and also i can ping from node3 to node2 very fine. and the firewalls are down at all nodes -all wired connection over a switch
I have a dell mp1210 xps laptop. I just recently installed installed Ubuntu 9.10 and am very green. With difficulty I managed to install the drivers for the wireless card and now have wireless on the laptop. In order to get the wireless working I had to restart my computer, and once it booted up again the wireless works, but there is no trace of eth0-my wired network device (Broadcom BCM4401-B0) which was working fine before I got the wireless adapter working. Lspci still shows the device as it did when it was functioning, but ifconfig only shows my local loopback and wlan0 (my wireless device). I am not sure how eth0 got deleted, I am wondering if maybe I have to set up some sort of switching between the wired and wireless adapters so they are not both active at the same time. Any suggestions would be really nice, I have been digging through the forums, but I am unsure of what went wrong or what to do about it.

The network card is an Intel (R) Pro 100 /ve. It seems that the card has tried to establish a connection via IPv6, when I believe it should be connecting via IPv4.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've read a lot on the internet about various ways of doing this but i've been unsuccessful each time. Basically what i've done is accidently un-installed network-manager because I was having trouble staying connected on my WPA network. The easiest way of reinstalling it I know of is using the CD but I don't have a CD ROM drive and the pen drive I used to install it I no longer have.
I tried using a program called Keryx but you need python installed and from some reason this doesn't come with ubuntu 10.10. I've also downloaded the .deb packages but I still need to download 200kb which is a killer. I've also downloaded it from here too [URL] but the install file makes no sense to me as i'm not a massive linux user. One last thing reinstalling isn't really an option as i've already put a lot of time into setting up this computer.
Running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell 710m. Fresh install of OS yesterday. Initially I had wired connection but no wireless. So I started chasing threads & trying different downloads & commands [WITHOUT KNOWING essentially what I was doing; throw your rocks at me HERE] & now I have lost the wired connection also.
Also:
[a] If I go into System > Administration > Additional Drivers, I get "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."
[b] As far as being able to copy a downloaded driver [using a working M$oft machine with net connection] onto an SD card & transferring that driver to the Dell laptop, I have tried formatting 3 different SD cards with the Dell, & each time I come up with various failure errors--& I have no idea why something as simple as formatting an SD card isn't working.

Also the connection is wired one with modem only it's reliance broadband. The wire is connected between modem and pc but there is no blinking of light for this connection. The wan is active and wan's light is blinking and when I was on xp on same pc there was no such problem.
