I am fairly new to linux and I just bought a new computer. I have a dell inspiron N4010 and I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I then was unable to connect with a wired connection or wireless. I am sure this is a driver issue I just don't know how to get the proper drivers. If I put my mouse over the wireless icon it says networking disabled. But the switch to enable networking is on the keyboard

I saw on a link in this forum, someone was having similar problem. However, when i tried the solution that was recommended/suggested to the person, it did not work for me.

I have just setup Ubuntu on my Dell Laptop a Lattitude C640 with a 3Com 3c905C Tornado Wifi Card. Well the wired and wireless do not work. They try to connect then bang no connection. I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. I have mastered how to get info from the terminal but how the heck to you edit a file? How do you get to that stage?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless connection to the internet, as well as a wired connection to a local network. When the wired connection to my local network is enabled, the wireless connection to the internet no longer works until I disconnect the ethernet cable.
(This setup used to work just fine when I was using Windows, but now doesn't seem to work. I wasn't using IP aliasing in Windows, but I am now, which may be causing the problem.)
My original connection to the internet was a wired one, at eth0, so once I got wireless enabled (on eth1), I created an IP alias to my local network of eth0:1 which is a static IP on my local network. The only configuration I did at all was to add a file named /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1, with the following contents:

And NetworkManager just seemed to pick it up automatically - I didn't change anything else in NetworkManager or anywhere else.
(Also I use 'service NetworkManager start/stop' entirely rather than 'service network start/stop' to manage my connnections. i.e. I did 'chkconfig network off' when setting everything up initially.)
I have searched and have not found anything specific to my issue. I am currently using NDISWrapper to load the bcmwl15 driver and when it's active it works beautifully.Problem is sometimes at boot, the card doesn't "turn on" and I don't know how else to describe it. The OS does not even detect that the hardware is present. I have disabled wireless hotkey in BIOS. The only way to make the wireless card "active" is to reboot with the wiredconnection to the router. After doing that the wireless card "wakes up" and works awesome.Is there anything I can do to make sure the driver load at boot?mes I get the error that NDISWrapper is not modprobbed when I go to network configuration and if I wish to do i now? I included wireless and wired, not sure it would help or not. After many Google searches on the subject I installed and setup Wicd. I am able to get a wired connection but not a wireless. I can see other networks, I am unable to connect to them though. Also when I installed Slackware I didn't setup the network. The Readme for Wicd said that having a network configured can mess it up. But is having no network set up worse. I know there is easier way to setup wireless networks, I just cant figure it out.
So I had 11.04 beta and after the official release I updated,rebooted and lost all wifi and wired connectivity.

We finally got internet in our apartment in China, but my husband was the only one home when the guy came to set it up (on his windows machine).
He connects by plugging in, then clicking a desktop icon labeled "Broadband Connection" where a box pops up with a username, a password box, and some buttons, one of which says "connect".
I am trying to figure out how to set this up on my netbook so that I can use the internet at home too. I have a feeling that even if I had been home when the setup guy came, he wouldn't have had a clue what to do with mine anyway.
On the WinXP machine: Connection Properties state that this is a PPPoE connection, with TCP/IP, QoS, and Deterministic Network Enhancer all checked. Under the security tab, unsecured passwords are allowed.
I have a HP Mini running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04, and I cannot get a wired connection to work. My network card is "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)", and I have the restricted drivers for the card installed. Wireless works fine, though.

I recently tried out OpenDNS on my wired connection, however after it was slower than faster, I tried going back to the original settings that the connection had (so basically to Automatic DHCP).
For some reason the connection wouldn't connect again. So I thought I'd try deleting that connection and creating a new one, but this still doesn't work. When I try to connect using NetworkManager it just does the 'loading' icon for 30ish seconds then says disconnected.
My wireless still works fine however.
I'd very grateful as i'm worried i've messed up the ethernet port and I need it for when I got University in a couple of weeks
I am having difficulties connecting to my router with my Ubuntu 10.04 laptop. Wireless works fine and I can get a wired connection when I boot into Windows 7. In Network Connections there is no Auto eth0 listing and when I create a wired connection, as soon as I enter details, the 'Apply' button grays out! Am I missing some permissions?

These days I wanted to connect to the internet on my laptop using a wired connection. When I inserted the ethernet cable, I was surprised to see that it doesn't work on Ubuntu 11.04. So I decided to boot into Windows and see if it works or not. And I found that it works without problems on Windows.

I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

I'm using Archlinux with NetworkManager to connect to the internet. When I'm in my room, I've an ethernet cable and still receive the wireless signal.Sometimes (like when we have a power cut, somebody is rebooting the router or simply something wrong with the provider), I'm disconnected during a few seconds, NetworkManager ask me again the password of the wireless (even if it remembers it), and then I'm ok.But when I'm not in front of my computer, while I haven't push the button "ok", it doesn't connect, even with the wired connection.That's not very normal in my opinion as there is supposed to have two different and independent connection. View 7 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Wubi through Windows 7. It seems to be working but it will not connect to my wired internet connection. It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.

I have just done a new install of the latest opensuse 32bit and for some reason I cannot connect to the internet, when I click on mange connections the vpn tag is highlighted and all the other tabs are grayed out and I cannot select them. So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

Why is wireless taking priority from the wired connection? I should not have to disable wireless just to have the wired connection connect.

After viewing another post I've provided the output of "sudo lshw -C network" command below (I've blocked out my MAC address on purpose). It appears that the lan card is not even being recognized. The card is enabled in bios (I've checked twice). I don't get it, the wireless worked fine before I did a fresh install of 10.04LTS. I can't use wireless because I have the b43 driver firmware issue that I can't resolve unless I get my wired connection working.

For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I've just updated my Dell Inspiron Mini to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), and I've very quickly run into quite a few problems. First, it took an awful long time to install all of the updates. Is that normal? Perhaps it's just because I'm using a puny netbook?
When the updates were finished and I rebooted, I logged in without any problems, but then got a gray screen. I've seen that screen before, when Ubuntu loads (especially with Lucid), but it doesn't go away. I rebooted using Desktop Edition instead of Netbook Edition, and there was an improvement, but the top toolbar is blank.Additionally, and most importantly, I can't get an Internet connection of any kind, wired or wireless.
I've just installed 11.04 Natty on an old Laptop (Dell Lattitude C400) and am unable to connect to my home network (wired LAN connection, no wireless). The laptop previously had WinXP installed and was able to connect (I have also double checked the cables and ports and they're all functioning ok).
