General :: Dvd Rom Drive Won't Mount Under FC14 After Installing From Dvdrom Drive?

Jun 12, 2011

no entries exist in the /dev folder for hdc, cdrom, dvd, or any other drive or drive type than hda. The only other similar device is sg0 which doesn't work either. I have tried every variation of mount I can find with every available drive and drive type and nothing works, but this is the drive I installed FC14 with, and it installed perfectly (except for forgetting where it came from!!)Do I have to install a module or recompile the kernel just to get linux to recognize the drive it came from?

General :: Sharing The DVDROM Drive Ubuntu / Windows 7?

May 26, 2010

As a relative noob with Linux (Ubuntu) I was enjoying learning stuff with Ubuntu Karmic - and everything I tried seemed to work even after my inexpert fiddling - which was nice! However, since installing Ubuntu Lucid I've spent loads of time trying to re-establish the share I had under Karmic whereby my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM was automatically available to my connected Win7 PC.

After a couple of days effort I've got to the point where I can access the CD or DVD mounted in Ubuntu, from Win7 but I cannot access the files within the CD or DVD (Windows Err Mssg: You Do Not Have Permission To Access.. I have noticed that since installing Lucid the mount point seems to be the name of the disk whereas under Karmic it was fixed as something like cdrom1. So if I edit smb.conf I can't specify the mount point as it depends on the disk name. Though to be honest I have no idea if this is anything to do with the problem!

To save what little hair I have left I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to have my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM available on my Win7 PC for read & write. PS I posted this several days ago on the Ubuntu forum but there's been no replies at all - I was wondering if the question is so daft that they think.

All of the media player programs including mplayer identify my devices as /dev/cdrom.

When I run the wodim --devices command this is what I get:

The /dev/cdrom reads like this /dev/cdrom -> sr0.

Ubuntu :: Sharing DVDROM Drive With Win7?

May 21, 2010

However, since installing Lucid I've spent loads of time trying to re-establish the share I had under Karmic whereby my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM was automatically available to my LAN (simple router) connected Win7 PC. Ubuntu Networking :: Get Network Drive To Mount As A Local Drive?

Aug 2, 2010

I was trying to figure out how to get my network drive to mount as a local drive on my computer. This was back on 9.10. Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.

Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?

General :: Mount External USB Drive In Debian To A Mount Point Based On The Volume Name

May 5, 2011

How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.

This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

Software :: Installing Debian From USB Flash Drive - Cannot Mount "CD-ROM"

Jul 29, 2010

Due to the lack of a CD burner (at least one that works properly) I've been trying to install Debian on my laptop from a USB drive. I extracted the ISO contents onto my drive, made an entry in GRUB (on the flash drive - I'm booting from it) and can successfully begin the installation, but when it tries to mount the CD-ROM, obviously it can't, as there isn't one. I tried mounting the flash drive partition with the ISO contents to /cdrom manually, but I don't seem to be able to do so. I either get "No such device" or "Invalid argument". I CAN, however, mount the FAT32 partition of that flash drive (which oddly enough I cannot mount in Windows - go figure). The partition I need to mount is ext2. All of the partitions show up in /dev as well as /proc/filesystems.

Also, I'm using the netinstall to save space on my flash drive. ( http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso )

Why can't I mount my ext2 partition?

I want to (no reason of course purely interest) get into the internals of my router (which happens to run linux) and be able to mount a drive to which i can save some data which will persist over reboots. I don't care if its only 16kb or whatever. I am guessing it must have some writable memory for the router configuration. I can telnet into the router and get a shell started up (busy box). Also I am aware of options such as tomato and DD-WRT to replace my router's firmware to give me much more access but I do not want to take the risk nor the time in configuring it and would like to retain my ISP's provided firmware. Somethings that might be useful:

General :: Clonezilla And Multiboot ISO Mount USB Drive

I was able to get the Clonezilla user interface to load correctly but when I choose any of the options I encounter an error "ntfs volume version 3.1" repetitively. I have a feeling it is because I am launching the iso wrong in my menu.lst config file for grub. This is what I have.
