View 7 RepliesI tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I tried the "S" command to skip and got the message "[141.233783] Adding 1502036k Swap on /dev/sdb5. Priority-1 extents:1 across:1502036k"
I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being.Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.
I upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and now the OS doesn't boot correctly. I keep getting the same error msg after selecting Ubuntu from the grub: 'The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.' Underneath that line is the other msg: 'Continue to wait; press S to skip or M for manual recovery.'
I tried them both and if i press S then it gives another err msg: 'The disk drive for /tmp is not ready or not present' ; 'Continue to wait; or press S to skip or M for manual recovery' now if i press S then it shows a black screen with this msg:

I would like therefore to have it mounted automatically on boot by placing a line in fstab, but since the computer (a laptop) won't always be connected to my home lan, this might cause problems. Is there a way to list the drive in fstab so if the drive is not present it will just move on?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

I have to computers: 'A' (linux) and 'B' (windos). On 'A' I have a linux system that i copy over to a movable disk on which i install the lilo bootloader. Now when I move the disk to 'B' I am able to boot into the new linux system, however I would like to have an item in the lilo boot menu from which I can boot the windows system on 'B' also. And now the tricky part: I would like to create this item when the disk is still on 'A' where windows is not present.
I have tried using "disk = /dev/hda1 inaccessible" without any luck.Is it possible to "cheat" lilo into adding an item pointing to a disk that is not present on your system ?

I have a very strange problem. My computer is unable to boot from any hard disk but is able to boot from any CD or DVD. I have double-checked the BIOS settings and I am unable to figure out why is this happening. It seems to happen on a cold startup and if a change is made in init/default file. (addition of the numlockx package modifcation.) So far a second or third restart will find the directory and complete the start-up.
On a 120 gig hard drive I have these partitions:
4 gig swap
25 gig /
90+ gig (the remaining space) /home
Due to complications, the laptop running Ubuntu had a hard reset during the 11.04 update. I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.
My 10.04 is mounting my USB drive at startup. This is fine except sometimes it mounts to drivename_ rather than to drivename. How do I make it always mount to drivename.

It mounts to: /media/Will's Drive
I feel like I shouldn't have to edit fstab or anything like that. If I can add it to my startup programs, that would be great, I just need to know the command to get nautilus to open up /media/Will's Drive at startup.
I work at a school where we are experimenting with Ubuntu 10.10. On our Windows machines, when the users sign in, their "U:" drive automatically mounts up so that can access their network shared storage. Is there a way to set this up in Linux so it automounts, rather than them have to go and find it out on the network every time?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Nook ebook reader and would like it to automatically open a certain application when I plug it in.As standard it just opens a nautilus file browser.I cannot find any settings that will let me associate a drive name/uuid with a certain application and google results came up saturated with how to make bootable USB drives.The only solution I actually found was to make a .autorun script in the root of the drive to start my application, but it still requires user interaction and is not ideal since I would like to implement this across several machines with different users/applications.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had windows vista on one partition, xp on another documents on another and programs on another.When I installed ubuntu on a new partition it very kindly let me see all the other partitions and mount them as necessary. I would like all my ubuntu files, documents music downloads to go right on to the documents partition so when I back up that drive to an external I have it backs up the documents drive it has all the files I have created in vista or ubuntu. Eventually I want to leave windows completely but I would still want to store all the ubuntu files on the documents drive.
I can go to "places" and mount the documents drive but what I would like to do is when I fire up ubuntu that the documents drive mounts automatically.
I am trying to run a script which would execute once the system start's up. I placed my script in /etc/init.d and made it chmod +x my-script and placed my script path in /etc/rc.local . It works fine in installed environment and its not working in live cd and USB.

I added the following line to the /etc/fstab to automount the drive at startup.If I manually the mount the drive (mount /mnt/external), I can access and read/write to the external USB drive without any issues. My problem is that during the startup process after a reboot, the drive is not being mounted automatically.

The drive shows up in the "Places" menu, and if I select & open it, the drive and all the scripts & text files in it work. But, if I go to run the scripts without opening the dive in the places menu first, it just gives an error.
1. What is being done when I select the drive in the places menu?
2. Can this be set up automatically, so I don't have to open the drive every time after I start up?
I've googled this many times but have not found a solution yet. Can you get external usb hard drives to automount at xfce startup? They automount if I plug them in once xfce is started. I have them connected at boot I get an icon for the drive which I can then mount. But I wonder if I can get them to automount at startup

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to make a live USB drive, perhaps even 1 with its own GRUB and a choice of operating systems..Its 16gb so it will fit..or maybe just install multiple desktop environments so I can switch depending on the resoruces of the computer I am using..Gnome>E17>LXDE.But I want it to be a regular account with a root/administrator password, ect. When I use the Startup disk creator or Unetbootin I find that the results are pretty limited. I might as well be using a live CD, but thats not ideal. Alternately, when I just install normally it doesnt always load, even when I hit F8 and tell it to boot from my USB drive.Knoppix based distros seem to work better than Ubuntu based distros in this regard, but I dont want Knoppix I want Ubuntu/Mint and friends.Finally, I have sometimes been having problems 'mounting' or using 'swapon'. Even when I turn on Swap with Gparted Im still not getting the benefit of the large swap area I have created..is this because of how the operating system uses swap? Is there a live distro that will save files and settings to swap before using up ram, by default? If not, is there a way to change the behavior of Ubuntu Live CD?

The above is the error message I get when I try to create an usb-flash boot drive. I downloaded the iso for Mint10 and use the "create startup disk" program to create the boot drive. I can see both the iso and the flash drive within the program, but when I click on "create disk" I get the above error message?
