Ubuntu Servers :: Installing Software Not Present On Installation CD?

Jan 19, 2011

This is my first time on a forum and the first time I tried to set up a web server.I am following a tutorial on how to set up a web server here: [URL]We get to a part were I have to install a firewall. The tutorial suggests shorewall. The command I am told to use is sudo aptitude install shorewall. However is returned is could not find package shorewall. I have searched the net and could not find anything on my issue. I then attempted to search aptitude but no luck. I found shorewall online but how do I download it without a GUI.

This is also my first time having an OS that is only command line. I have done other things from the command line only before. Things such as computer science homework on the computer science servers. For simplicity, how do you install software off the internet on to ubuntu server without creating a CD or using a flash drive

General :: Installing Lilo Item When Drive Is Not Present

Oct 30, 2010

I have to computers: 'A' (linux) and 'B' (windos). On 'A' I have a linux system that i copy over to a movable disk on which i install the lilo bootloader. Now when I move the disk to 'B' I am able to boot into the new linux system, however I would like to have an item in the lilo boot menu from which I can boot the windows system on 'B' also. And now the tricky part: I would like to create this item when the disk is still on 'A' where windows is not present.

I have tried using "disk = /dev/hda1 inaccessible" without any luck.Is it possible to "cheat" lilo into adding an item pointing to a disk that is not present on your system ?

Ubuntu Servers :: LVM - RAID Device Not Present On Restart

Jan 29, 2011

I've decided to toy around with LVM and mdadm this weekend. I can get everything working, and all is well, until I restart. After that, I no longer have any /dev/md0 device, which during the auto mount process, causes an error. I've looked through several HOWTOs, as well as the LVM/mdadm man pages, and I believe I've tracked it down to mdadm's "assemble" that is needed (so that LVM can see the md0 device).

Not exactly sure how to go about having this occur during the boot process to ensure that the LVM mapped drive is available for when fstab is read. In case it helps this is a base install of 10.10 server 64. I have four drives, the first is used for the OS and is not in the RAID array (nor LVM). The second and third are RAID1 (/dev/md0) and there is a volume group associated with /dev/md0. The last is a LVM, but not RAID, and it has its own volume group.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Burn Present OS On DVD / CD

Aug 5, 2010

Recently, I've started to use Ubuntu operating system.. the last version 10.04 LTS. I downloaded the .ISO image file from the site and burnt a CD to use it back, but I was wondering now after I installed my Ubuntu and made all updates and upgrades to the applications and added all packages that might be useful for me, can or can't I burn the present system with all the add-ons that I've added on DVD/CD?? Instead of using the old CD that I made which is free of all packages and necessary programs.. or at least, is not there downloadable files from the internet that allow me to install the packages and the programs offline!! Considering that I might not be able to have an internet connection..

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting When RAID1 Array Is Present?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm sorry if this is the wrong section and if there is another thread on the matter. I searched but couldn't find threads with my specific problem. I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Server 64 bit which I intend to use as a internal file server.

The hdd setup is:
500gb system disk
1tb storage
2tb storage (2*2tb using built-in motherboard hardware RAID1) When the installation was complete and the computer rebooted I got an error message saying "error: no such disk". After re-installation I got the same message and I then tried disconnecting all the storage devices and it booted perfectly. I then tried connecting up the 1tb drive and again it booted as it should. But when I re-connected the RAID:ed disks the error message re-appeared.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upon Boot, The Video Is Missing While The Audio Is Present?

Jul 4, 2010

I have a Dell Dimension 2350 with an Intel 82845G Graphics controller that is connected to a 15" Craig flat screen television via VGA. It has absolutely no issue running at the television's peak of 1280x720 at 60 Hz with Windows XP. When I first discovered Ubuntu, I immediately tried to install it. After a tedious month of failed attempts, I resolved to doing what I opposed: using Wubi. I did not want to use Wubi because I wanted Ubuntu on a separate partition.

This is where my issue is. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, I rebooted and started normally. I noticed that audio was present but all I saw was a blank "No Signal" screen on my television. I waited for over an hour, to no avail.computer was responsive. This was obvious when the computer released audio when a button was blindly pressed. I reinstalled after waiting even more, suspecting a failed install. I then used the failsafe graphics upon pressing escape after my third failed install. This worked, but it gave me an unsightly 640x480 resolution. I did my best to fix this, but it came to a dead halt with an error I could not fix: a CRTC error.

I then installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala without an an issue. Everything was perfect except for the fact that I did not have the most updated Operating System even though it was free. I decided to to update 10.04 via Update Manager, thinking that all would go well. It did not. My mistake in updating brought me back to the drawing board. My official Ubuntu 10.04 Compact Disc arrived in the mail yesterday. When I hit "Install" I eventually end up at the same "No Signal" screen

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Error On Rebooting - Disk Drive Not Ready / Not Yet Present

Jan 29, 2011

I am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:

7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.

So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:

/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

not knowing any better, my first time through I just picked "/" and that is what got me to the message "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" So what should I be specifying at this point?

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Key Isn't Present (with Error: No Such Device And The Uuid) - And Hangs On A Blinking Cursor?

Mar 15, 2011

I just attempted to install to a USB drive, and somehow in the process, GRUB overwrote my Windows 7 bootloader on the internal disk. My work laptop is now booting into a grub recovery whenever my USB key isn't present (with error: no such device and the uuid) - and hangs on a blinking cursor whenever the key is plugged in.I'm not familiar with what my options are for grub rescue, but ls shows (hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0)

My laptop is encrypted, so I don't have much chance of recovery unless I can get back to the windows bootloader.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade The Disk Drive For /media/XXX Is Not Ready Yet Or Not Present

BUT I CAN'T OPEN A TERMINAL!!! as i am at a point where the screen says: Continue to wait, press S to skip or M for manual recovery. so if i run this command : gksudo gedit /etc/fstab my computer whines about there being no way to show this on the screen, I have tried this:

Use a non-graphical editor, like emacs or vi. Try Ctl+Alt+F3 -- you should get a login prompt. Login to an account with admin privileges (like, the first account you created, for example), and then type 'sudo vi /etc/fstab'; that will open /etc/fstab in the vi editor. Make your changes, save them, exit the editor, reboot... but if you're not used to working with a non-graphics-based editor, you'll have a bit of research to do. It's not hard, though, just tedious.however i have not managed to make it work.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Realtek NIC Installation - Unable To Configure The Network Card Because Kernel Device (eth0, Wlan0) Is Not Present

Nov 30, 2010

Installed a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not

The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig

Debian Installation :: Servers "dead" After Installing 6?

Sep 11, 2011

Today I tried installing 4 known working servers (which were running CentOS) with Debian 6 (x86 and x64). They are all of the same brand. After installing (which went fine) I rebooted the first server: the BIOS POST hangs at 78% and was not going any further. Powercycle again, CMOS wipe by removing the battery of the motherboard, replacing cables, reseating components, and so on. After rebooting the second server: same issue. POST hangs at 78%. As I can't get into the BIOS setup or PXE boot/USB boot I'm really wondering whats going on. All 4 servers are now "wrecked" in this way. I used the Debian netinstall image, and installed from various sources, like the surfnet and leaseweb mirror.Anybody any ideas about this? Does Debian 6 do anything firmware related during install?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 From USB Will Not Work

Jul 23, 2010

What is wrong with the Ubuntu installer? I am trying to install 10.04 Server from either a USB CD-ROM or a USB memory stick and no matter what I try (and I've tried every trick I've been able to find so far). I regularly install other OS's using these methods without any problems or workarounds required. Why is the Ubuntu installer so screwed up?

When I try to install from USB CDROM the installer boots, asks me all those keyboard questions, and dies at "Detect and mount CD-ROM". It askes me if I want to load CD-ROM drivers from removable media I've even tried various things such as using the command prompt to manually copy the iso to /root/ and mount the iso to install from... no dice.

So next I tried using the Universal USB Installer tool as outlined at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download The USB stick is created and it will also boot up the installer as expected. This method stops at the same point as the USB CD-CDROM. Other than rip open the server and hack in an ide/sata CDROM drive (there's no room for one), what does one have to do to make this work?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing To HDD From USB - Only Boot With The USB In?

Sep 14, 2010

I want to turn an old laptop (one that worked flawlessly with Ubuntu until the graphics card fried - it can still do VGA graphics though) into a server for files and perhaps, at some point, hosting my web site. I installed the latest 32-bit Ubuntu server edition from a USB drive, and the install went fine but I can't boot up my computer from the hard drive - I just get a blinking cursor, and no GRUB even if I hold shift while booting up.

If I boot from the USB, however, the installation works, even though I know that I installed it to the hard drive - once I have booted up, I can remove the USB drive and access everything on the hard drive and see that this is, indeed, where the server has been installed. I'm guessing that somehow, GRUB or something boot-related ended up on the USB drive, so that I can only boot the hard drive by telling the BIOS to boot from the USB, which then points everything towards the hdd. During the installation it asked me if I wanted to overwrite the master boot record, and I said yes (because the server will be the only OS on the computer) - do you think somehow this put the boot record on the USB drive?

I don't know that much about boot records, but since the server runs fine off the hard drive when I boot from the USB, I'm assuming the problem is boot related. Searched google and the forums for people with similar problems but couldn't find any. CD drive on my computer is broke so I can't install from a disc.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing Mod_python With LAMP?

May 4, 2010

End of my first week after using ubuntu. I have setup LAMP for the purposes of my own coding education, place to run php and python scripts.

LAMP seems to be setup fine and working - I even got php5 working with it - however I am having a lot more trouble getting python to work in much the same manner.

I have downloaded the mod_python from [URL], unzipped it, tried to run ./configure and it said apxs was not installed.

After some reading it turns out I had to remove some apache-fork something and install apache-devfork (please forgive lack of exact names).

After doing this the ./configure on mod_python passed the "finding apxs" test but then said it can't find apache2 at /sbin/apache2 and again aborted the configure.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 On Proliant 3000?

I got my hands on my first real server hardware yesterday - a PIII 600 MHz COMPAQ Proliant 3000 with 1.8 GB RAM, Smart Array 3200 controller and 4x18.2GB SCSI ULTRA 3 hard drives. RAM is upgraded from original and USB card added - otherwise hardware arrangement appears to be original.

Minimal 10.04 installed (35 minutes boot to boot) as Server 10.04 could not detect CD drive. My problem? Everything works but it does not look right. Probably my bigger problem?? I know almost nothing about RAID and the more I read the more ethereal my understanding seems to become.

When installing, I chose to install with LVM on c0d0. Grub written to MBR. I have posted df -l, fdisk -l and lshw output below. Would someone tell me if this looks correct and, possibly, offer some pointers if it does not.
