I been trying to figure out why after updating to the newest version of ubuntu the system didnt work anymore, but now my main concern is trying to recover files that I had on my computer, how can I do this?

I'm trying to run the Ubuntu LiveCD to recover grub, but the LiveCD no longer works. It stops the boot process and does not load completely.
I can not run Ubuntu in live mode to recover grub.
Is there any way to recover the grub/grub2 without the LiveCD?
120 GB HDD. All ext4. Wanted to partition it into 60 gig ntfs, and 60 gig ext4 for dual install. Booted up the LiveCD. Clicked on the partition to modify. Selected /windows as mount point. Change took place. Now, my disk shows up as 57 GB FAT (almost all of which is free) and 60 GB of unallocated space. Any way to recover it? I'm sue the data is in the 60 GB of unallocated space. While I have a back up of some of the data, I'm going to be losing quite a bit if I can't recover this...

A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." I hit ok and pc throws the cd out, and thats it; Rebooting gets me back to win 7.

The Thinkpad came with XP, but the license key has rubbed off. When I received the Thinkpad, it was running Ubuntu only, and I never bothered to investigate re-installing Windows. Basically, I want to recover the license key so I don't have to blow $150 or however much Windows 7 costs these days. Is it possible to recover the Windows XP license key in Linux after Windows has been wiped from the system?

It recently had problems booting up, and now takes about 20 minutes to get fully started. Is it safe/advisable to run the demo version of Ubuntu from the LiveCD? I really can't afford to trash or crash my computer, it's got lots of important data on it etc.

I have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.
I installed Gentoo on my WD Mybook WE II and im forget/dont know the ssh password. I can access Public shared folder but there is no access to change it. Any idea? I need to log in to mybook via ssh to install anti virus on it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentially overwrote the first 1M of my harddisk on linux (using dd). So, the partition-table is gone. I can still access all partition (except the first one) using /dev/sda2 (and so on), so the data is still there. I only need the partition boundaries to restore the table. How can I do this? The Linux-Kernel must still know them because all mount-points still work. fdisk -l /dev/sda doesn't work because it acctualy reads the partition table.

How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?
I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.
Mi friend's PC is messed up and her windows doesn't boot anymore. She doesn't have any other OS on the PC.SO I thought I could recover her HD files using Ubuntu wth live cd. I put the CD in and I tried but I can't mount the HD because it says "NTFS is marked to be in use".How can I force the mount? Can I do it even if it's from an Ubuntu live CD?

(as in pay someone to do it), What happened is I accidentally deleted a few folders containing family photos and my text files for work, address books etc, just personal stuff I don't have backups of. (from a ext4 partition 'root')
Feel free to call me stupid, but I didn't notice I had deleted them before I did the following... I ended up copying enough data to the ext4 partition which completely filled it (less than 1mb remained), once I backed those up I deleted them (trash empty) a few days later I ran sfill to erase the originals.
By mistake I've overwritten some of my project files. Is there anyway in ubuntu to recover those files.

I made backup DVD's using Brasero and disabled full windows compatibility when burning them to disc. The really dumb part was I didn't check the DVD's before I reinstalled windows on the drive I was backing up. They were all there, I assumed they were ok. The files on the DVD's (mix of doc, xls, jpg, etc.) won't open in windows or Linux. Anybody know of a way to recover them? From what I've been reading, it seems like I'm screwed, but I thought I'd check with the experts. Is there a specific way Brasero/Linux changes the file, and can that info can be used to change it back? I assume it just cuts the name/header to 64 characters and I'm SOL. I'm going to see what diskdoctor's recovery software can get back from the hard drive.

Well I finally joined the forum, because I finally have a big problem!
I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed inside of Win7, I updated it to 11.4 BETA (I know a bad Idea). Well I dint work, now ill I get is some sort of GRUB console.
I would like to either fix this or retrieve my very important files! I now have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer on a separate drive. But I have not been able to find my old Ubuntu files.
I had 10.04 installed using wubi. I used it only for pictures. I uninstalled that version and installed 11.04 as a true dual-boot. I forgot to back up some pictures on the 10.04. Is there a way to recover them?

Recently, due to hard disk failure, some of the System files got corrupted, I have no idea to which files, but booting Ubuntu from the latest kernel is not working, instead I have to select the previous version from the grub screen.
How to recover these files? Is there a way by which Ubuntu automatically scans and repairs the system files.
I have a drive with an NTFS partition where all the files were deleted. What I'm looking for is a way to rebuild the directory structure and recover the files. I really, really want the directory structure as the partition contains 460 Gigs of data. Normally I would use the tools here: [URL] but I've never dealt with this much data before. Everything there that I've used creates a pretty messy dump however.
I have used ntfsundelete before but only for a few files at a time. I have no idea what would happen if I tried to run it on a partition of that size. I'm comfortable with data recovery but this amount of data is beyond me. I've run ntfsundelete with no args and from what I can tell of skimming the pages of output all the files are fine. The partition has not been written to.
