General :: Which Distro Allows To Windows And Installing At The Same Time?
Apr 6, 2011
I have windows vista installed on my laptop and i wanna have a linux too. i dont wanna lose my windows. which distro allows me to have my windows and installing linux at the same time??
I had setup my system for triple boot with Windows, F10 & Suse. I had the Windows partition and then installed F10 setting up Grub to load the other two. All went fine and was able to choose to boot to Windows which worked. I then installed Suse, choosing the bootloader to be on the partition for Suse. This installed fine and can now choose to boot into Suse which works. F10 still works as expected, but when I choose to boot Windows, I just end up with a Grub command line. I can't see how the Windows partition could have been affected. I can still see all the files in there, but it just wont boot.
[Code]...
This is not really a Linux issue but does anyone know how I can 'repair' this Windows partition without affecting any other partitions. I don't have a Windows install CD. If I boot off FreeDOS, is there a command to repair the 'bootability' of the Windows partition only?
My computer has different time when booting to linux or Windows. How to make the time the same?My computer time is 10:57pm Apr 14 when booting to linux. My computer time is 2:57am Apr 14 when booting to Windows Vista Home Premimum SP2.Both OS are set to the same time zone (GMT-5. Eastern Time US & Canada).
We have the need to install an older Linux distribution (Suse 10) on a brand new laptop. The kernel that comes with Suse 10 doesn't have new enough drivers for the NIC and the drive controller. We've been able to find the source code for the NIC and build a working NIC kernel module however, we can not find the source code for the drive controller outside the kernel tree. Newer kernels see the drive fine; the controller is the Intel ATA_PIIX. Its included in the kernel, the hardware we have it just newer than the version in the old suse 10 kernel supports. I've crawled all over the intel site looking for the code outside the kernel source and have been unable to do so. Is it possible to lift the code from a newer kernel source tree? Is it available for download anywhere?
Edit: (from a comment below) SLED-10-SP2-x86 is the OS. The installation of these systems in an automated process, trying to change the process to include a VM (if we had the memory) or install a different base OS; while doable- can't be done in the time allowed. To get through process development, testing, UAT, staging and deployment takes much longer than the time we have. The old laptop had this same issue and the fix by my predecessor was building the NIC and drive modules by hand. We need to simply update those modules for this new laptop
I recently got an ASUS laptop with a Core i5 processor and an ATI VGA card. I would like to install a fast distro and keep my Win7 installed. [dual boot]. I hate Windows 7 because it boots really slow even on a 64-bit system like mine (they claim it's 60% faster, and it still takes about 2 minutes to boot). So I want a distro that boots really quick (in less than 25 seconds). Also, I need it to have the very latest drivers because my laptop is quite new, and I read that the same VGA card I have already has problems when running under Ubuntu. (Not sure though)
I like programming (Python and Processing), so I did lots of research and figured out that Fedora is pretty good for programmers (it has many programming languages and IDEs already configured in the system..no need to install anything!) + I think it's pretty secure since it is based on RedHat Linux + I read some stuff about Fedora 11 and their promise to boot in less than 20 seconds, donno about 12 though? is it true anyway?
On the other hand, some say that Fedora's package management is not very cool when compared to openSuse's decent package manager and system administration tools...etc. Linux Mint looks very elegant and it can run Ubuntu's packages [I suppose] so it's another possible choice too. CrunchBang is also really attractive and minimal, they say it's also quite lightweight..so that's another possible choice for me too
My questions are: - Which of the above distros is the fastest when booting? This matters the most for me. - Which one has better support for the most recent drivers? especially for laptops?
Is there any other distro that boots faster than the above distros (in less than 25 seconds on a Core i5) and still has good hardware support and security? I don't really care for the distro's appearance as long as it does the job.
I have 84GB free space on this hard drive and want to install another distro. Will I be able to create another / and /home partitions for the new distro?
i multibooted with windows 7 and ubuntu 10 lucid, windows crashed for some reason and ubuntu remained running live and strong, but i want to do a clean install of windows while still having my installation of ubuntu untouched. i tried doing this on several machines but windows ended up becoming the dominant bootloader and i couldn't get grub to recognize the windows os partition and the linux partition for booting but when i did i only got the linux distro and i didn't see windows when i tried to boot into the distro it just re-directed to the grub menu it just kept doing this until i decided to turn the machine off
is there a way to install windows and dual boot it with linux if linux was installed first
i installed ubuntu to multiboot with windows 7 but i don't know how to remove it to where its just windows again you can't delete the partiton ecause grub comes up how do i make it go back to the way it was before i installed ubuntu
I have a Toshiba TC1000 which is about 8 years old. 256 ram, 1.66 ghz processor, 30 gb hdd, running Win XP sp3. I bought this as an emergency purchase and have had nothing but problems with it and other than throwing it at the wall I thought I might try one last solution - to install Linux. This device has no optical drive but it does have power ISO installed but I don't know where to start with all the choice of Linux, Ubuntu etc. Plus other than the OS will I need any other software? I am a newbie and don't know much about computers so I won't be insulted if you think this is idiotic.
I created a custom linux distro that originated from ubuntu server and I installed time-admin and want to change the time without admin rights. Is this possible?
i have a problem when opening a session because it pops up in two window pane..!!! i had this problem when i modified the panels and add applets or item on the panel which is the "window list" ,,now i want to restore the default panels ,, by downloading the panelrestore.sh but it wont allow me to extract the .tar.gz file see the message below..tar: This does not look like a tar archivetar: Skipping to next headertar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
I have a desktop PC with Fedora, Ubuntu and Windows installed and grub used for multibooting. But time in Fedora is always 5 hours behind. If I change the time in Fedora, then Windows and Ubuntu will be 5 hours ahead of the current time. I don't understand how to fix it.
OK, I've tried to install:Mint 6, 7 XFCE, and 8jolicloudeasypeasyand probably another or two..Oh, I'm installing this on my Acer Aspire One 751h, so I am using a USB key and UltraISO, with the exception of jolicloud, which has its own USB creator, and most recently I tried Mint 6 using UNetBootIn.Anyway, I keep getting the same general error, but with different files... Sometimes its errno5: input/output error, and other times its parts of a file (blah/doowop/dadada/video....) I don't know if its a driver problem or what, but I've seen video, sound, and other random stuff.. each time it gives a different one though.Either way, the main paragraph in the window talks about having a dirty CD, needing to replace my hard drive, or burning a new CD at a slower speed... I've checked the md5sum, and that's not the problem.
I'm wondering if my problem is that I'm creating the USB from one computer, and then trying to install it on the 751h. Another thing that might be causing the problem, but I doubt, is the fact that when I set up the partition, I select "use entire disk". Another question, Does it make a difference if the drive letter changes? On our main computer, the USB is mapped to drive E:, but on the 751h, it shows up as D:. If I have to change it on the 751h, how can I without an OS? when trying to install linux, it wiped out my windows, and I don't feel like re-installing it just to change it in a few minutes.
I have a home build computer that has data corruption problems at boot time. I have exhausted all the troubleshooting steps that I know to try. Do you have any additional troubleshooting techniques that I should try?
Symptoms: I run both linux(ubuntu, mint and fedora) and win7 on this machine.Sometimes I have just one installed.Other times both in a dual boot setup. The OS installs just fine. The system runs just fine for a while. Then it fails to boot.At first I can fix the boot problems with grub or bootrec (/RebuildBcd, /FixMbr or /FixBoot) as indicated by the error messages.Eventually the system fails to boot at all and I have to wipe the disk(s) and reinstall the operating system. The linux installs seem to last a bit longer. I typically have linux running for a month before the troubles start, but I have to repave and rebuild within 3 months. The windows installs last at most 2 weeks before troubles develop. The system is turned on for the day or evening then turned off overnight.Once the system has booted all checks that I have run pass. On windows fciv.exe, sfc.exe have never deteced and troubles. On linux tripwire shows everything unchanged. Chkdsk and fsck have never reported errors.
Hardware:ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard. 2x2GB kingston memory from the ASUS QVL for this motherboard.I have used two hard disks in this system.WD caviar black 640G (WDC WD6401AALS-00L3B2).Seagate barracuda 7200.7 (ST3120026A).On some rebuilds I have used just one of the drives, sometimes I have both installed. The DVD burner is a LG 4x (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NS30 ).The power supply was originally an el-cheapo Allied unit that came with the case. That has since been replaced with a Seasonic X650.And that is all that is in this system. I use the onboard video, sound and network. I have never plugged an external device into the system (not even a USB flash drive!).
Trouble shooting so far...I have run the memtest utility from both the ubuntu CD and the windows DVD many times. Even when run for several day neither test utility has ever found a memory error.I have run the seagate and western digital provided test and diagnostic tools on both of the hard disks. I have done this on both the unstable ASUS M3A778-EM system and a very stable gateway system.I have swapped out the HDD cables several times.I have replaced the cables with new cables and with cables pulled from a stable system.Because the corruption happens only at boot time I suspected the power supply was having problems under the extra load of disk spinup. So, I replaced the power supply. No success.
I have run the system with every version of the MB BIOS from the version that it shipped with to the latest and greatest. The BIOS upgrades made no noticeable difference.I have enabled and disabled automatic updates on both win7 and ubuntu linux. That made no noticeable difference. That is it. That is all the troubleshooting ideas I have had.
I use Debian 6 as my main distro, installed on partition 1 (sda1) on my laptop. After installing a second distro on sda2 everything still worked fine and both distros show up on the boot up screen. After installing a 3rd distro on sda3; suddenly my cursor (in Debian) is frozen and I can't use either the touch-pad or the 'left and right clickers'. It seems unlikely that this would have anything to do with installing another distro but on the other hand it is a bit of a coincidence...or? The cursor works on the 2nd OS. The 3rd has not yet showed up on the boot screen (I want to do a 'update-grub from within Debian)
First off I am new to Linux and fairly new to working in Networking and Server config's. I have been using Windows for years and have been learning Windows Server 2003 as I have a Technet account, I can get any MS software. I would like to learn Linux and use this as my Server environment. My project looks like this: I have a Quad core, 8gb machine. I want to install a distro of Linux (server or desktop) and run Virtual Machines on it.
My perferred way would be to use Virtual Box but I could use VMware products if that was better. I would like to run WS2003, WS2008, Linux Distro and anything else that will run in a VM. I can figure out that part pretty easily. I want the Linux host machine to run all these VM's and access and use them on my MAC remotely. I have done some research on ESXi as well, but I don't think my Hardware is going to support that. My exact PC spec's are:
AMD x4 940 8gb DDR2 Gigabyte MA770-UD3 2 Velicoraptor Drives GTX 260 I will be dual booting this machine on one of the Raptors for gaming as well.
Would a representative from each Linux distro be kind enough to tell me what the command is for installing the Ruby interpreter in their distro? In Gentoo it is "emerge Ruby".
I am about to work on getting the workstations on my network here to be connected to the Active Directory on my Windows 2003 server using Likewise Identity Service. of the security requirements is a good time sync, so I am trying to setup my Windows server time server on my CentOS machines. These machines dual boot Windows 7 and CentOS 5.5. I am using the Windows server as a time server and it's getting its time from its CMOS.llowing a microsoft kb article. I removed all the time servers from the CentOS box I am experimenting with and added the IP of my Windows server, it seems to connect ok but theime never gets updated.Oh, and this network has no connection to the internet it's cut off from the world, so sad and lonely and cannot get internet time
I am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.
I currently have 10.04 installed as my primary OS. I also have windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha installed. I would like to be able to play around with the 10.10 without any risk of damaging my 10.04 install. However, it seems grub2 control was transfered to 10.10. How do I return control to my original distro?
I have 2 hard disks. In the first one, I have installed Archlinux, with GRUB. The second one is empty. I have a Windows XP .iso file. Is it possible to install Windows XP in the second hd, without having to burn the ISO file? I don't have got any CD recorder/reader.
I have a PC with Windows installed.I have a usb pen drive.I am able to use that pen drive on Windows.I have no "boot from USB" option on my bios.Is there any linux distribution available, whose iso image can be downloaded and saved in pen drive, and open the pen drive from inside windows, and start installing linux distribution to my PC from there? This means I want to install linux without using a bootable device. Is there any way exist? Here I want to know if any linux distribution with such facility is available so that I can load it on my PC without any bootable device.
I am using windows XP.I wish to install GRUB bootloader so that I can modify menu.lst & add lines to boot from an ext2 partition having iso of linux distro. One way is to use live cd & try 'sudo grub-install <device>' but I don't have live cd.I came to know about open source software 'wingrub' but I am not able to understand how to use it even after reading [URL] what should I do to install GRUB in mbr & have option to boot to c drive which has windows & another partition (/dev/sda2) which has linux.
What would be the best way to install Linux such that I could also on occasion use the Windows XP that came with my new computer? Ubuntu with XP running in Wine? -- so I can use both at the same time? Dual partition to dual boot? I tried putting wubi Ubuntu installed on top of Windows, but have problems with grub crashing and have been told I had best not install Linux on top of Windows. But if I install Linux as the primary OS, how best save the option to do some Windows? I want to do astronomy stuff, so am hoping Ubuntu is good for science, if not, I can use RedHat.
I do not have a Windows XP install disk from the vendor, so if I wipe out the XP install, it might be trouble for me to reinstall windows, so I don't know if I should just copy the hard disk to an external drive. The computer does not have my personal files on it yet.) Is my current idea of running Windows in Wine feasible? Would I need to reinstall Windows by copying back the files from an external hard drive?
Currently, I have linux installed on a USB drive, and I am running the OS from there. That is fine and dandy, but I REALLY wanted in on the HDD. I am using a laptop, and I thought I had to be running linux to install linux on a HDD. Well... I'm clueless as to how to get it on the HDD now. I do NOT have any CDs, so I need to install from the Hard drive. My computer is so,so, slow running the OS from the USB drive.
Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
My friend borrowed my laptop for a while and when he gave it back he said he replaced Windows 7 with Ubuntu. I asked him to switch it back simply because I prefer Windows. He claims not to know how. I don't want to go buy a new windows 7 disc I just want to figure out how to get rid of this Ubuntu and Windows 7.
