General :: Install Programs From Synaptic Offline?

Dec 16, 2010

I have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?

I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?

Ubuntu Installation :: 404 Not Found With Apt-get Update/synaptic?

Apr 6, 2011

I have a little problem on my relatively newly installed 10.10 Lubuntu that I can't quite figure out. I'm guessing it is a piece of cake for most of you ubuntu-veterans so I'm hoping a kind soul would save my day: The last couple of weeks, the apt-get update (and corresponding button in synaptic) does not manage to update all of my repositories, and I get a "404 not found" error at the end (see attached text file (hope I did that right, am a longtime lurker but haven't posted anything much yet)).

I realize that I have been doing some adding of repositories, and have written the wrong command a couple of times, which may be the cause of this (at least the two frescobaldi ppa errors). What I don't understand, is how I remove these faulty(?) repositories, so that my system stops claiming being unupdated. After searching/googling the issue I tried looking for the corresponding entries in sources.lst, but to no avail.

ps. my system is in german, the messages say "W: Failure when getting.." and "E: some index files could not be downloaded, they were ignored or others were used in their place". (rather badly translated)

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Update-manager And Synaptic To Agree?

Apr 24, 2011

Is it possible to get them to show the same result.

update-manager says I need 315 files @ 302mb to download synaptic says 315 @ 318mb (using "mark all upgrades" button, then going the summary via the apply button )

this is on a machine with a clean install of maverick without anything new installed/changed from the defaults. Are these the same 315 packages and is it just a discrepancy in the way they calculate the size?

I used "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -s --print-uris > upgrade.txt" to get me the same 315 packages, but unfortunately it seems the simulation switch (-s) stops it from actually printing the uris (which would include the size info) so no help in trying to establish where/what the discrepancy is.

This is just the 1st step in me understanding the whole process so I can do what I outline in my long rambling post [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu :: Can't Run Synaptic Or Update Manager

I've been running Xubuntu for almost a year, and haven't had any problems with it up till last week, when Update Manager said it couldn't install a lib package. Several days later, I saw the update notif saying that there were 12 available updates, so I went to install them, and it wouldn't install any of them. Now, if I try to start Update or Synaptic in any way, they'll open for about five seconds and then close.

Ubuntu :: X Windows Can't Open - Cause Synaptic Update ?

Jul 1, 2010

I am trying to run Ubuntu 10.04 amd64. And Ubuntu typically is stable for me dispute all windows installs get BSOD. Graphic card is nvidia geforce 8400. more details will be included in system section

Index:CauseSymptomsSystem

Cause: 3-5 days ago I updated my computer that had not been updated for 2-4 days using synaptic. I had no error warnings so I decided to reboot (I might have used alt ctrl delete to restart). After restart I received the standard prompt that occurs when the graphics driver is having problems. The screen with the options: run low graphics mode, reconfig graphics, ..., restartx.

I tried low graphics. Eventually I boot to netroot. In net root I tried messing with nvidia driver packages not modalias. and messing with xorg.conf using nvidia-xconfig. Also attempted to change drivers using update-alternatives --config gl_conf those are where I messed and possibly exacerbated the problem (but probably not by much)(but I have had nvidia-current driver problems before due to updates that make me decide to reinstall).

Symptoms: The command startx returns no errors that I can tell from the log but startx stops. gdm (in netroot) returns cant find user list (cant readily recall the exact name but sounds like the password and names of users). Then some graphics errors. Most gtk and X programs/commands return the error x window cant open. and gtkbox (the gtk test program I will correct later) returned an error at ".run priority 0". Not when the same command was called with no priority explicity stated.

System: Hardware: user built. Amd Athlon II x3 435. ECS IC780M-A2 (V1.0A) EliteGroup motherboard. 2Gb ram. 500gb linux HDD. 40GB xp 32bit. grub2 boot. Software: ubuntu 10.04 amd64. Sources partners and some APPs.

I suspect the initial cause (before I monkeyed around) was that one of the lib packages that was updated in that session made my computer unstable. Also to note I removed a lot of lib packages in netroot thru the autoremove command. If not one of the lib packaged one of the others that were updated (I wish I could find out what was changed so I could at least undo it manually (in theory).

Ubuntu :: Can't Open Update Manager Or Synaptic

Aug 2, 2011

synaptic tells me: "you must manually run sudo dpkg configure -a to correct the problem"

update manager tells me the same thing but also that the software index is broken. And it offered a partial upgrade but it doesnt work or do anything just gets me the aformentioned error message.

I think this was all cause by me interrupting the last update process by pressing cancel, because it froze or something.

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu's Synaptic Can't Authenticate Sudo's Update

Mar 2, 2010

I recently installed Xubuntu (9.10) in my computer, but... I have been having intermitent hard disk problems, and so I decided to google a little and after reading this:

[URL]

I did use Synaptic to search for smartmontools and then install it.

Synaptic complained that it couldn't autenticate the packet, but I figured this was happening because... this is not an application supported by Canonical? I clicked and installed the packet (well, in fact, I *think* it has installed two applications, not just one).

Then later, I saw one of those arrows at the top right of the screen, and clicked it to install updates. Synaptic told me to update SUDO. Hmm... serious. And then even more: it told me that it couldn't autenticate it I stopped the installation and registered at these forums.

And more: before posting, I tried to reproduce the "error" (and again, stop before installing the "suspicious" SUDO update) but Synaptic now autenticated it troubleless and installed it.

Well, now I have a LOT of questions:

1. Where do I place this post?. Security?. Hardware problems?. Update and installation? (Linux noobiness?)

2. my hard disk?. I've read somewhere that an application called "fsck"

3. What may have happened with Synaptic?. Why wouldn't it autenticate a SUDO update?

4. Have I done something wrong?. Something unrepairable?

5. Can I trust the SUDO version that now I have installed in my system?

6. How could I check what has Synaptic exactly installed?. Is there any log file anywhere in my system?

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manager Crash Update-apt-xapian?

Apr 27, 2011

I upgraded an older system from jaunty 9.04 to karmic 9.10/ Following the upgrade, and about six hours of stable use, I ran the synaptic package manager, to pull in fvwm-crystal and a couple of other nits. Synaptic went into its usual tiring Rebuild Index while the resource hog update-apt-xapian ran away gleefully with the cpu pegged. for longer than I've ever seen it... about 15 minutes, and then the system crashed. and, I mean it crashed hard. I have not seen linux do this in years. Not just a seg fault, the whole machine just crashed (cpu, display, keyboard, the works). Restart and no problem, until I ran Synaptic (Rebuild Index. several minutes, crash).I played this game for a while; thinking the system might just might be overheating... let it cool down, and retried.same result. I tried running one last time, and this time pressed the reload (on Synaptic main panel) prior to the crash.it pulled in the repository updates and completed the Rebuild Index. (no crash)

I have run Synaptic several times since that. downloaded some goodies, and have had no further crashes (although, it does run Rebuild Index every time I start it.and update-apt-xapian pegs the cpu while this is going on. The question(s) I have are:

1) I was not aware that an apt these days can bring down the kernel (no panic, no logging, just down....) How is update-apt-xapian tied into the kernel that permits this vulnerability?

2) There appears (from searches) to be a problem with Synaptic or at least with xapian...?? What is going on with this resource pig..?

3) If I disable xapian and use sudo apt-get instead, instead of Synaptic, does this solve this resource problem?

4) Is there another forum area where this might be addressed besides general?

I've asked about this in several forums but no one has been able to answer me. So I'll ask two different and more fundamental questions, which perhaps someone here can answer: What is the mechanism by which those update notifications are issued? And what programs are involved?
