I am on Debian/Tor/Vidalia environment and I am thoroughly confused as to what the Apt-get engine does. To put it simply, I landed on Debian because I heard that Torrent-downloading stuff via an external application such as U Torrents does no longer guarantee anonymity, even with a Tor proxy server. So I got into the Amnesia CD stuff, after burning the ISO image on CD. I was hoping then to be able to install U Torrents on Debian and carry out the U Torrents downloads from within the Debian shield.
I did download U Torrents but I was unable to install it from the .exe file. Then I heard that programs can be installed in Debian only via a special APT-get engine. My understanding was that by running the" APT-get" engine in the CMD( Terminal) screen, I'd be able to access the softwares I wanted to install, such as U Torrents..
Unfortunately, when I run the " Apt-get" engine with the script " Apt-get Install + software name, " I get a " no packages found" answer. I searched for Bit Torrents, Azureus, U Torrents and a host of other common softwares, to no avail.. None is there. I even got to the APT-get.org site. THere I did find hundreds of repositories and packages , but I haven't the slightest clue as to what they contain. This database is not searchable by software name, so I don't know if and where my software is there.
I have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?

I started using Ubuntu a few days ago due to a classmates recommendation, and I simply cannot get this program I need for class to install. Or if it does, I don't know how to make it work.
I've got to install VMWare Server 2.0 for my class so we can make virtual computers and what not. But, no matter what I do I can't get it to install. Whenever I try to install it like I was told on various websites (here's one for examples sake [URL], I do this: sudo ./vmware-install.pl and get this: Can't install perl script "./vmware-install.pl" : No such file or directory
I've tried putting in stuff like home/computername/Desktop/vmware-install.pl, but I still get the same problem. I've racked my brain and my browser trying to figure this out, but I've had no luck.
i want to know how i can install programs in ubuntu 10.10.i try to open ubuntu software center then search about the program i want then press on install button but after that i can't know how i can find this program or how i can get it ?

View 3 Replies View Relatedinstalling programs on ubuntu, you see i run ubuntu on my old time computer from around late 90's early 2000 and the internet port on the back is for old telephone lines but i no longer have these wires. So I decided to download the packages on my newer acer laptop, put them on a usb and plug it in, but i have found out that .tar.gz is nothing like the windows executable .exe and scince i'm quite new to linux i have no where to start.
P.S i have already tried installing in terminal but failed miserably...
so i just did a fresh install of lucid last night. it went relatively well, but there's a few minor issues.. one of them being that i can't install certain software from ubuntu software center because it tells me that the program isn't offered for amd64.
for example, when i try to install skype, it tells me
Quote:
Sorry, 'skype' is not available for this type of computer (amd64).
i even downloaded the 64 bit skype from the website, but when it doesn't want to install that either and just leaves me with a broken package.
the thing is, these programs that won't install with lucid worked perfectly with karmic.. so i guess it has something to do with lucid..
I don't know how to install programs from the net on here >.< this is driving me up the wall. Just about any program I download doesnt have an install option.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed WINE to get some old games to work on my Ubuntu box. (Return to Castle Wolfenstein)I tried downloading some demos and it says BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX and to read the executable bit. I did, and it says it will NOT install any programs downloaded from the internet. I thought 'fine, I guess they have to be retail games' so I popped the disk in and it tells me the same thing. Any exe program I EVER try to install from anywhere is just BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX. Why is this happening?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have access to an account on my school's student-linux server, but I don't have sudo or root access.
I would like to install and use programs aside from the minimum ones available to all users. We have been given permission to do this, excepting new webserver and database software.
I know enough to compile and make a tarball, but that leaves me with an inelegant directory structure, no man page access, and no easy access to the executable.
I would like someone to share how they would install programs in this environment- ideally in a clean manner, with access to the man pages, and info about how to set an environment variable so the programs can be accessed via their name (without a path) both by me and possibly by scripts.
Dealing with missing libraries seems to complicate things further. For example, a program as simple as toilet requires libcaca.
I think the proper handling of the process of cleanly installing libraries in a user's home directory is an integral part of an answer to how to install programs without root access.
There are no hard drives in this computer, which has an 8 gig drive in the computer (Dell Netbook)and a 16 gig SDHC card. Ubuntu linux is on the 8 gig drive with 2.5 gigs remaining free space and 14 gigs free on the SDHC card. Is there a way of loading, or transferring programs to the SDHC card to keep the free space on the 8 gig drive at a reasonable level? I've transferred several of my windows programs to the 16 gig card and use them successfully with Wine.
