General :: How To Automatically Say "yes" When Prompted

Jun 14, 2011

Yesterday, I was given this script for getting Flash updates for my Ubuntu 11.04 system ...

Code:

#!/bin/sh
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

When I run this script, I am prompted

Code:

The following extra packages will be installed:

ia32-libs lib32asound2 lib32bz2-1.0 lib32gcc1 lib32ncurses5 lib32ncursesw5 lib32stdc++6 lib32v4l-0 lib32z1 libc6-i386 nspluginwrapper
Suggested packages:
xulrunner-1.9 firefox-3.0 konqueror-nsplugins msttcorefonts ttf-bitstream-vera ttf-dejavu ttf-xfree86-nonfree xfs lib32asound2-plugins
The following NEW packages will be installed:

[code]....

which I manually have to say "Y". Since I'm running this script from a cron, is there anything I can add to the above script to automatically say "Y" if I'm asked a similar question above?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid 10.04 On Playstation - PS3 - Cd Is Automatically Ejected And Prompted To Press Enter

May 3, 2010

I downloaded the appropriate iso for the ps3 from here:[url]

(specifically: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso via torrent)

Installation runs smoothly up until 100% and then i am prompted to reboot.

When i click reboot, i get info on some daemons(?) shutting down(i think) and then the cd is automatically ejected and i am prompted to press enter.

So far, so good. After i hit enter though, i get a large amount of various read errors and finally a segmentation fault. The system just hangs there :/.

I forcibly reboot the PS3, and then i am greeted with the pack of errors that are shown in the screenshot.

I have a list of files that I am copying around for various purposes. What my current command looks similar to this:cat list_of_files | xargs -I {} /bin/cp -f {} /destination/dirI am using the full path to cp so that the default alias of cp -i does not take effect. However, when I find a duplicate file, it is overwriting any that have already been copied. What I would like to do is to force cp to not overwrite and not prompt.

General :: "Login Incorrect" Error After Boot - No Password Prompted

May 17, 2011

I have built a linux image based on kernel 2.6.32.10. The image boots up fine & at the login prompt when I enter the login Id - the
system doesnt prompt for password - instead throws an error message "Login incorrect".

mygway login: admin
Login incorrect
login: root
Login incorrect

From all the search I did, I narrowed this down to be a pam configuration issue. I checked that the /etc/securetty has an entry "/dev/ttyS0" to allow root to logon via serial console - so I ruled out this file to be a cause for that error. Few files that I am not entirely sure are as below:

1) /etc/pam.d/login
sudo cat login
#%PAM-1.0

OpenSUSE :: Don't Get Prompted For Root Password Anymore?

May 15, 2010

Something weird happened lately (more probably I messed something up). I don't get prompted for root password anymore, for example while installing updates or software. It's not like the system remembers the password and does everything without asking for credentials, it simply doesn't ask and states that it can't do anything because of lack of privileges.

I use GNOME and can run YaST and Software Installation - I get asked for root password when running these. I can't set privileges when doing thing's outside those, like for example installing updates through that update icon on the bottom toolbar, or trying to install something by clicking on *.rpm.What might be the cause of the problem is that I was trying out KDE lately, and because I didn't like it I uninstalled it's packages. System asked what to do with dependencies and I chose to save most of them, but I might have uninstalled a bit too much.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Prompted To Use The NVidia Drivers?

Jul 15, 2010

Just got openSuSE 11.3 installed on my system and so far I like it better than my previous distro (Xubuntu). However, under YaST, it's showing a Vendor Driver CD, which I think might be for my nVidia chipset on my Zotac ION motherboard. How do I enable full graphics support for my system?

I Xubuntu, it automatically picked it up and prompted me to use the nVidia drivers. It also added the nVidia PPA to the Software Sources. Does openSuSE have anything like this?

Ubuntu :: Prompted For Username And Password At Startup?

Aug 30, 2010

not for the typical username and password that I use to log into my computer. It's actually prompting me, upon startup/reboot to have me insert my name and password, in what appears to be the command prompt. I am still a noob with Ubuntu and Linux in general, so I have no idea what I did to make this happen. It's not terrible and zomg if it doesn't get fixed I'll die, but it is slightly inconvenient to have to "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start" every time I reboot my computer. Anyone know what I have to do to fix this?I would also like to apologize if this has been covered in another topic, but I could not find anything

OpenSUSE :: Updates Not Installing - Get Prompted For Admin Password But Then Nothing Happens

Jan 19, 2011

I have fresh install of SuSe11.2 64x My software updater applet tells me there are about 50 or so updates required. I check all and then click install, get prompted for admin password but then nothing happens except the software updater window closes and if I hover my mouse over the applet it tells me it is updating.

however hours later and nothing appears to have happened. If I click the updater applet all the selected updates still appear in the update window. I have added all the standard repos and have network connectivity. I'm a bit baffled here - it worked perfectly fine on my last 11.2 on the same machine.

Ubuntu :: No Mouse Click Response When Prompted With Keyring

Jun 2, 2010

I've been using both for awhile and can usually figure out my own problems, but I'm having issues with this one. I recently updated to the most recent version of Ubuntu. Before the update, everything was fine. But the first time I loaded my computer up after the restart for the update to come into effect I was hit with a problem. When the system loads up and logs in I'm met with a prompt asking me to "enter password for keyring 'default' to unlock." That is nothing new, I've always had that come up, but for some reason now when that appears I can't type in my password or click on anything whatsoever. I have control over my cursor and can move it by moving my mouse, but when attempting to click cancel, ok, or the password box or anything else there is no response. Because I can't get passed this prompt, I obviously cannot do anything on my computer.

OpenSUSE Network :: Prompted For A Password When Accessing A Windows 7 Share?

Feb 14, 2010

I have searched for days on this problem and no one seems to have the fix. Everyone else seems to go off on tangents.I have 3 computers. One runs XP pro, one runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and one runs openSUSE 11.2.The two windows machines can share files between each other with no problems. On suse I setup samba correctly. When I go to Computer -> Network on suse, I then go into Samba Shares. Then I see my workgroup name. I click to go in and I can see all 3 of my PC's listed here. When I click on my XP pro machine,am prompted for a user name and password. I put it in and I gain access perfectly.

When I click on my Windows 7 machine, I am prompted for a user name and password. I enter it in and it prompts me again for the user name and password. It will not let me in.I have changed all of the settings in 7, I have disabled the firewall, I have changed the security policies, I have changed the encryption strength.Simply Samba is nolaying well with Windows 7. I cannot believe that I am the only one with this problem

Ubuntu Installation :: White Screen After Installing Nvidia Restricted Driver As Prompted

Jan 6, 2010

I've had Ubuntu installed on my desktop for a month now, and its all worked like a charm, so I'm thrilled. I then decided to install it on my old laptop as well to see if I could breath a bit more life into it, and to get used to working Ubuntu a bit more. The laptop had 18.6GB partitioned to C:// drive or windows XP, and an empty 18.6GB D:// drive, so I deleted the D:// drive in XP using the Microsoft disk utilities tool, all well and good. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu-9.10-desktop with an Ubuntu CD into the largest continuous free space, and it set it up nicely. When I first booted it up there were a ton of updates to install, as there had been on the desktop first time, which I dutifully installed. As on the desktop a little notice popped up telling me to install the NVidia Proprietary driver for the NVidia card (specifically "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]"), as it had when I installed it on the desktop, so I chose to install that and then restarted the computer.

On restarting GRUB2 loaded, and it booted Ubuntu. I then saw the little white logo on the black screen for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes completely white, with some pixels left behind fading to white slightly slower. First time through I held down the power button to force shut down, and on restart exactly the same thing happened. This time I held down alt+sysrq and went through the R, E, I, S, U, B sequence, however as opposed to usual I didn't get a black terminal-like screen after hitting any of the buttons, although it did reboot on B. It did boot correctly in recovery mode, however I was at a loss what to do here. Incidentally, the same problem occurred when I booted to previous version of the kernel as well.

Then I decided that as I didn't have any data to lose, and it was still early in the day, I'd do a clean re-install. This time I chose to ignore the updates, and just install the NVidia driver as prompted to check that it was the driver causing the trouble. Having installed the driver and restarted I got exactly the same problem as before - definitely this pesky NVidia driver, not any of the updates. So here I am at clean install 3, having just got all the updates, but not having downloaded the NVidia driver as prompted, with little desire to go through yet more reinstalls. My questions are:

1) Do I need to install this NVidia driver? The rest of the computer specifications are fairly paltry by modern standards, and I won't be doing anything graphics intensive on it (the most graphical program will probably be Battle for Wesnoth) and I I don't need to install it, not installing it seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem.

2) If I do need to install it how would I go around doing this without getting my charming white screen?

3) Is there a way of removing the driver from recovery mode that doesn't involve a clean install again? I have tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia-driver, which tells me there isn't any installed. I have tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf which made no difference. I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this didn't help. I have tried a couple of other commands as well but I can't remember them, however I would probably recognise them if I saw them again.

Onto System information - pulled from listed specifications and SysInfo:

General System Information
Release:Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)
GNOME: 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 2009-11-03)

Fedora :: Not Getting Prompted To Install Packages - "Failed To Authenticate"

Apr 19, 2010

Yesterday after trying to remove KDE and noticing that it started removing a bunch of Gnome packages as well, I've managed to fix most of the damage. I still have one thing left. To install a .rpm package I have to do it via command line as root. If I try just double clicking it now it doesn't prompt me for the root password, then it just says, "Failed to authenticate" and doesn't finish. Also I used to be able to scale the frequency of my CPUs with the applets on the Gnome panel. When I would select a different frequency it would prompt me for the root password, then change accordingly. Can somebody tell me if there's a gconf setting or a package that was removed that could cause this?

General :: How To Automatically Change Zshrc For Different OS

Feb 9, 2011

I am currently storing most of my dotfiles in a git repository to make keeping them in sync across all my computers easier. I've just recently acquired a Macbook so now have to have all my dotfiles supporting the differences between Linux and Darwin. The first incompatability that I have encountered is colour coding ls, in Linux this is the flag --color=auto and for Darwin it is -G.

My first attempt at making my .zshrc portable is to do the following:
case `uname` in
Darwin)
alias ls='ls -FG'
;;
Linux)
alias ls='ls -F --color=auto'
;;
esac

Once I find a few more things to change I'll probably pull the computer specific stuff out to separate files to keep it a bit cleaner. What I'm mainly wondering is if there is a better way to do this other than using `uname` to determine which stuff to run.
