Fedora :: Not Getting Prompted To Install Packages - "Failed To Authenticate"
Apr 19, 2010
Yesterday after trying to remove KDE and noticing that it started removing a bunch of Gnome packages as well, I've managed to fix most of the damage. I still have one thing left. To install a .rpm package I have to do it via command line as root. If I try just double clicking it now it doesn't prompt me for the root password, then it just says, "Failed to authenticate" and doesn't finish. Also I used to be able to scale the frequency of my CPUs with the applets on the Gnome panel. When I would select a different frequency it would prompt me for the root password, then change accordingly. Can somebody tell me if there's a gconf setting or a package that was removed that could cause this?

I'm running Lucid Lynx. When I go into synaptic package manager and try to take updates, it says it can't authenticate some of the packages, including for example linux-image 2.6.32-27-generic. What is up with this?

I get a box from update manager listing all the updates that it think I should download. I try to, and I just get this message afterwards, "Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch". Any solutions?
Edit- I'm running on Ubuntu 10.10 if that's any help.

I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 (this may be the thing that causes me to finally update ) with KDE 4.4 (specifically, 4.4.4 release 5). Recently (maybe the past month or so... give or take a week or two or so... first time I really remember it happening is when I realized they changed the repository for KDE 4.4 from factory to stable and switched them) >90% of the things I try to install via YAST fails with the following error... this example is me trying to upgrade avidemux from the Packman repository.
Code:
Error: RPM failed: warning: /var/cache/zypp/packages/Packman_Repository/x86_64/avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 9a795806 error: %post(avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 11
Oddly enough, the main avidemux package threw the error, but the avidemux-qt4 package didn't.
I've tried doing

I've been a long time ubuntu/debian user, and I decided to give fedora a try. Durng my first set of updates after install, the updater (gpk) seemed to stall on an 'updating libraries' step (it lasted for over 12 hours). Anyway, I force quit the program, restarted the system, and all appears fine. What I wanted to ask is this; is there some way to check the yum log to see if the update completed successfully, or an equivalent to 'apt-get -f install' to fix any broken/partially installed packages.

I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

I want to use secure file permissions within OpenSUSE, but having to provide the root password for every window I click is just a little too much.Wonder what the setting "paranoid" does then. And I also wonder how to adjust the safe settings to not get prompted with every single click.

I had 11.1 for some time, was working fine. decided to upgrade... long story short - did a fresh install with livecd of the 11.2. I use ldap server for authentication, its on the lan. configuration during install goes through fine. fetch dn, etc... then after the bootup - authentication error for any user except root. At the same time automounter works fine, ldap requests are going through for hosts (my local hostnames are also on this ldap server), I can edit users through YAST when logged on this box, but alas! even for "su - user" I get "incorrect password", whereas if I am root, then "su - user" gets me logged in as user. password does not go through!

I've just installed 11.1 and so far things seem to work OK. When I left the machine the screen saver kicked in and wouldn't let meback on with my password I chose during installation (and the only password I chose!) Re-booting the machine sorted the problem...until next time! I have now disabled the lock out for the screen saver so things ought to work now, but why did it do this? New with openSuse!

But ever YUM attempt returns "Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again"
What am I missing here? does this mean the packages don't exist, or do I need to modify something to make them accessible?

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

I believe I have everything but this setup, as when I use my Outlook's Test Account Setting, it's able to do the following:
1) Send a test e-mail
2) Connect to POP3
3) See the actual test e-mail at /var/spool/mail/<username>
However, the Test Account Setting wasn't able to authenticate to POP3. I then do the following:
1) Start up Command Prompt.
2) Execute "telnet <server IP> 110". It gives me "+OK Dovecot ready".
3) Type "user <username>"
4) Type "pass <password>". It gives me "-ERR Authentication failed".
Then I searched around and found this. However, I'm not sure if I am able to make any sense out of it.
My CentOS 5.5 is setup with the following standard files:
/etc/passwd (password field contains the character "x")
/etc/shadow (examining this reveals it's using MD5 has as the password field begins with $1$)
So how should I set my /etc/dovecot.conf? I think it's this file I need to setup to enable POP3 authentication?

I am currently trying to upgrade over 100 rpms on multiple Red Hat servers. Whenever I try to do a rpm -u /packages/*.rpm i recieve a failed dependencies error on the very first rpm. I know that I can go though each rpm one by one and trace each dependency but that will take forever. Is there a way to skip these errors? I know the -nodeps command for rpm but I dont want to screw something up but running all of these rpms on -nodeps

I downloaded some rpm files from rpmfusion.org to my computer using my Windows Vista OS. I then moved the files to the partition where Fedora is installed. When I ran the files on the terminal using the rpm command, it showed a lot of errors like: xyz needs abc.. and so on. How then can I install softwares and codecs on my computer without being online? I don't have screenshots right now.

But when i try to install .RPM packages the "normal" way so do i get stuck at the window where it says something like "Package Installed". No matter how many times i try to click on the "Close" button, so is the "Package Installed" window still open. Atleast i can install .RPM packages with the terminal.

I'd like to update my version of gsl to 1.15 (it has improved integration routines) Downloading & compiling worked, but I'm hesitant to overwrite the default packages with ones I compiled myself since there's a lot of compilation flags etc I may be getting wrong. On top of that, I need the header files from gsl-devel too to link against, and I'm not sure how that works. (Where to place them etc)Is there any way to use these packages to install on fc14?Should I just compile it myself? And what about the devel headers?

I have FC9 and I want to install additional packages from the Fedora DVD. The problem is that I don't have net connectivity.Using rpm would be very cumborsome since it would fail because of dependencies. One method is to note down all the dependencies, and install them with rpm. This may again give a list of dependencies. Something like yum is required which would automatically install the dependecnies also. But for yum to work you require a working (and high speed) net connectivity.

I installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.
I tried many options in my afpd.conf file. Here is the latest code...
