It's actually prompting me, upon startup/reboot to have me insert my name and password, in what appears to be the command prompt. I am still a noob with Ubuntu and Linux in general, so I have no idea what I did to make this happen. It's not terrible and zomg if it doesn't get fixed I'll die, but it is slightly inconvenient to have to "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start" every time I reboot my computer. Anyone know what I have to do to fix this?I would also like to apologize if this has been covered in another topic, but I could not find anything
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, I had chosen "automatic login" . So i was not asked ofr username and password everytime I switched on. I later wanted to change the settings. So I went to systems-->administration-->login window-->security. There I disabled automatic login and I reboot the computer. Now the GUI does not allow me to enter Username and password. It says "Authorization denied" at the login screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have setup a debian server and it has been working fine but I moved it to a different location and not I am getting a problem. When I start the server up, it loads fine and loggin prompt. I can enter the username "root" without any issues but as soon as I press enter, I am not able to enter password. The cursor just blinks and i press enter, the server responds by saying invalid password.
I was connecting a USB keyboard and changed to Ps/2 but this didn't make any difference.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm trying to configure my chat accounts. But after entering username and password, it is asking "Enter password to unlock your login keyring". I have entered my login password. But it is saying that "The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring."

But no, it loads a white page for a couple of seconds and then go back to the section where you enter username & password. Why? the user and pass was correct. If i hit ctrl + alt +f1 and use the same username and password i can login with the CLI. But not in the graphical login prompt. How does such a problem gets fixed?

(specifically: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso via torrent)
Installation runs smoothly up until 100% and then i am prompted to reboot.
When i click reboot, i get info on some daemons(?) shutting down(i think) and then the cd is automatically ejected and i am prompted to press enter.
So far, so good. After i hit enter though, i get a large amount of various read errors and finally a segmentation fault. The system just hangs there :/.
I forcibly reboot the PS3, and then i am greeted with the pack of errors that are shown in the screenshot.
I am pasting sudo commands without problems as a user (ales in my case) and then immediately the ask the user password.
The keyboard seems to be dead, no keys work, not allowing me to enter the password.
Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

I find this quite aesthetically pleasing and am immediately aware that I cannot continue until I enter my password. This is the only time that the screen dims in this fashion when asking for my admin password. Is this correct? If not (or maybe even if it is), should this be considered one for the papercut ninjas?

Every time I try to run SSID.sh it prompts me for the goddamn root password.
Something weird happened lately (more probably I messed something up). I don't get prompted for root password anymore, for example while installing updates or software. It's not like the system remembers the password and does everything without asking for credentials, it simply doesn't ask and states that it can't do anything because of lack of privileges.
I use GNOME and can run YaST and Software Installation - I get asked for root password when running these. I can't set privileges when doing thing's outside those, like for example installing updates through that update icon on the bottom toolbar, or trying to install something by clicking on *.rpm.What might be the cause of the problem is that I was trying out KDE lately, and because I didn't like it I uninstalled it's packages. System asked what to do with dependencies and I chose to save most of them, but I might have uninstalled a bit too much.
When I installed the OS, I wasn't prompted to set the root password. Is this a bug, or did my install hose up?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have fresh install of SuSe11.2 64x My software updater applet tells me there are about 50 or so updates required. I check all and then click install, get prompted for admin password but then nothing happens except the software updater window closes and if I hover my mouse over the applet it tells me it is updating.
however hours later and nothing appears to have happened. If I click the updater applet all the selected updates still appear in the update window. I have added all the standard repos and have network connectivity. I'm a bit baffled here - it worked perfectly fine on my last 11.2 on the same machine.
Trying to figure out if there is a way to connect to a cifs share, and only being prompted for one password? ie using the following:

I installed IPlist earlier today on my main/admin account (which I only use for installing programs. I don't use this account daily.) and everything was fine. When I logged into my every day account and tried to load the program, it prompted me for my password. One runs XP pro, one runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and one runs openSUSE 11.2.The two windows machines can share files between each other with no problems.On suse I setup samba correctly. When I go to Computer -> Network on suse, I then go into Samba Shares. Then I see my workgroup name. I click to go in and I can see all 3 of my PC's listed here.When I click on my XP pro machine,am prompted for a user name and password. I put it in and I gain access perfectly.
When I click on my Windows 7 machine, I am prompted for a user name and password. I enter it in and it prompts me again for the user name and password. It will not let me in.I have changed all of the settings in 7, I have disabled the firewall, I have changed the security policies, I have changed the encryption strength.Simply Samba is nolaying well with Windows 7. I have a rather difficult problem. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. What to do?edit: this is NOT the login window, just the little dialog that pops up when you need elevated privileges.

I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).
I have built a linux image based on kernel 2.6.32.10. The image boots up fine & at the login prompt when I enter the login Id - the
system doesnt prompt for password - instead throws an error message "Login incorrect".

From all the search I did, I narrowed this down to be a pam configuration issue. I checked that the /etc/securetty has an entry "/dev/ttyS0" to allow root to logon via serial console - so I ruled out this file to be a cause for that error. Few files that I am not entirely sure are as below:

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, my laptop wouldn't boot into the GUI. I followed some steps that someone had posted at was able to get X back and working. Now, my laptop lost power without being shut down. I let it fix my disks, and I'm now back in the command line and can't get X working. Here's the weird thing...in the command line, I can enter my username ok, but it won't accept my password. I've figured out that it is the @ symbol in my password that messes things up. (I figured this out because when I typed something in the username, like "test" and then hit the @ key, it erases "test". I imagine it does the same thing and erases my password.)
