General :: How To Add MS-DOS To Gurb Boot List
May 4, 2010
I've searched around, and I can't find anyone attempting just a flat dual boot between the two. Technically, I'm trying to have MS-DOS, vista, and ubuntu living happily together. I installed DOS to the first partition, windows second, to the third partition, and ubuntu third to the second partition. When I start my system, I get the grub menu, but only ubuntu and vista are listed. How would I go about adding MS-DOS 6.0 to the list?

I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop. A while ago I dual installed Fedora 12 on the laptop & now I can't enter Ubuntu. I don't get an option to select the OS at start up, Fedora loads automatically. Can anyone help me configuring my GRUB? This is my grub.conf file in fedora -
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that

Also, the Ubuntu installation is 64bit, whereas the Fedora installation is 32bit, don't think that should cause any problems, but I want to be sure.

Alright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.

I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

KMail 1.11.4, KDE 4.2.4: I'm migrating from WinXP to Mandriva, and installed KMail at the weekend. Works fine, but I have a niggle - the message list displays headers grouped by month order. I'd like the option of having a simple list (no groups), and suspect that it could be done - but I haven't been able to find out how. I've checked in the Handbook without success, and a search in LQ hasn't turned up anything yet.Any suggestions gratefully received. If this isn't the right place for a KMail query,

I spent a few minutes googling this, but I am not even sure what to search for. I suspect I'm looking at part of upstart, but it could also be sysvinit, plymouth or something else entirely. Every time I reboot, just between plymouth's splash screen and gdm loading, I am shown a list of services starting. The list shows the names of the services and [OK] if they started sucessfully or [fail] if they did not (only apport ever fails and only occasionally). I don't need or want to see this list. It also interrupts the transition from Grub to GDM (the background color should be the same shade of purple from grub all they way to the desktop, but this list is presented as ordinary terminal output: white text on black background)

I have three OS-es (XP, Ubuntu 10.10, OpenSuse 11.3) on my PC (single disk) and would like to add the Ubuntu to the boot list (using Suse's grub), so I can boot into it. The problem is that I have never did this before and am not much familiarized with linux, so if anyone could help me out, I would very much appreciate it.Now, from what I've read a bit on the forums and the net (specifically here), if I use the code from the link:
Code:

title Ubuntu 9.04 booting via symlinks

I installed Lubuntu, and when I boot up, Lubuntu isn't in my dual-boot options. It may have to do with the fact that I had to manually mess with the partitions in the installer. I am using XP.

I've installed ubuntu 11.04 side by side with my xp. However after reboot I found my boot order list is like
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic (recover mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
[code]....
As you can see the windows option is way in the bottom, how to make it to be on the second line like below ?
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic
Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda1)
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic (recover mode)
[code]....
how can I remove the other 3 which I thought unnecessary

I installed The latest and greatest Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything is clicking along just fine except one annoying feature that I am unable to get my finger on.I have quite a list of choices at bootup. I updated a couple version of the kernel and there is this memtest thing...twice... Then my family also uses windows 7 so that is the default at the bottom of the list set to boot after 3 seconds to keep the nagging to a minimum.
I would like to know the cleanest and safest way to have the list only show the current kernel option and the windows 7 option if this is even advised. Would it be best to have a backup (Previous kernel) in the list? *just in case* Is it safe to seek out the old kernel by version number and uninstall? Will this remove the entries in the list? Is editing the list and leaving other options installed wise? Is there a gui grub2 configuration tool with these advanced options? I have StartUp-Manager, but there is no options to change the list.
Im looking for the best/safest option to get this done because I now see another kernel update image in the update manager and it is going to increase the size of my list once I find the time to update. Im a bit green and scared I will ruin a good thing here. Everything is working perfectly so far and I realize one click and it could all be over.

I tried looking this up. It seems that in Ubuntu, you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. I tried that, and the file is not present in Debian "Squeeze". (Just trying it out on a different PC, In case you are confused by my other thread regarding Lenny) So what do I need to do to change the default OS to boot?

Quote: Yes, but add a line in there to tell Grub where Ubuntu's root partition is. For example:
title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-14-generic
root=(hd0,2) <adjust for your drive and partition numbers

I just installed a dual boot win7-Ubuntu 11.04. When I reboot, there is no list of OS options displayed, it just boots to windows. Below are the details of how I got to this point.I Used GParted to delete all partitions off a hardard drive. Then installed win7 from CD. Win7 works fine. Then I formated an ext4 partion and installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the iso CD. But on reboot I don't see a list of OS options. When I boot from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, I can view the usual Unix directories in the hard drive Ubuntu root (bin, etc, lib, usr, var) and the /boot/grub directory. So Ubuntu looks like it got installed. What else can I trouble shoot to get the list of OS options displayed?

I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows XP Home. It worked OK until I tried to reboot. Then, when the GRUB boot list came up, there was no response to the keyboard cursors or other keys, so I was unable to select any OS other than the default. Right now, I can't access Windows at all.
Any solution to this? One person suggested enabling USB in BIOS, but I found nothing relevant there. Another suggested I use a PS2 keyboard, which I did, but no change...same problem.
If I can't get a solution to that, how do I change the GRUB configuration to make Windows the default? 10.04 doesn't have the same kind of GRUB boot config file that I recall using the last time I worked with Kubuntu, way back around version 6 0r 8.

I'm testing out 10.04 on one of my partitions, and I love it. I have been using it exclusively for a while now, I have not logged into Windows since! Really don't care about windows anymore! However, yesterday I went to boot into windows... and I noticed the option to choose it is missing from my list! Maybe I'm just not getting to the correct list? The list I get shows like 5 different modes and versions of Ubuntu and something called Windows Recovery (which does nothing), but that's it.

how to change (rename, delete) lines from boot list in grub 2, Ubuntu 10.04? For example, when I boot my pc, I have a boot list with options "Ubuntu 10.04", "memtest" and "Windows 7". I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.
