View 6 RepliesI feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am planning to download/install latest Ubuntu Desktop version this week. How to install additional Applications in Ubuntu in case I will need some. BTW, the old HDD I will be using is pre-installed with Debian so I need to do a "Fresh_install". I know how to use RPM in RedHat but I think in Ubuntu its a different thing. Is there any particular website to download these additional Apps?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and created a LiveCD using PCLinuxOS 2009.I decided I wanted to devote a machine to Linux so I could do more. I installed PCLinuxOS on one of my systems. Great. everything seems to be working pretty good. again, surprised and curious. Lets install some apps and really get the ball rolling... How on God's green earth do you install applications on Linux? You have to jump through hoops and travel to application managers, command line scripting and all sorts of other mess just to install a program? Is it really that much different that a simple install or setup file cannot be created that the end user clicks on? I'm struggling with the concept that entire programs can be written in open source code but an installation routine is beyond the scope of the developers.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI get to my specific problem, I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a Playstation 3 (PPC). I am attempting to install "Qemu-launcher".
1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."
5. Found and downloaded "qemu-kvm-0.11.0~rc1.orig.tar.gz". Extracted archive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a relatively new user to Linux and Ubuntu. i have added a few applications. This morning I was attempting to add an application and thought I had followed the instructions properly but the install failed and now I cannot install any application through the package manager nor check for updates through update manager.
I get the followng error message:
E: Type 'Remmina' is not known on line 64 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
How do I install apps? I was following the instructions, but regardless of the app, the install button was shaded. I tried 5 completely unrelated apps wish no success. I'm running 9.10.

I have been trying to update Ubuntu, and install applications, but for some reason, when I go to the update manager, it says "It is unknown when the package information was updated last." and shows an error message, that says the repository indexes could not be downloaded, and shows this.

I'm so angry I can't do anything on ubuntu I can't find java packages I cant do anything! my laptop is just a worthless piece of junk now because of this broken piece of software, and what angers me the most is wiping my already configured and WORKING ubuntu 10.10 for this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there any way that i can install applications on any location (directory /partition) ? If we keep the installation file on other drive and just keep the link of that file/folder on root directory (/usr /bin /usr/sahre) then we can save our space of root directory. I found several times that my root partition is full after installing some applications. It is so painful to shrink or reallocation of root partition. Maybe this procedure of software installation will be helpful for the people who are already created low spaced root partition.

Background information: So you know how we choose from a list what applications we want associated with a file type? It's a menu full of applications.I've filled mine with different applications I've reinstalled. There are many repeats of application names, with the only difference being most of them don't work. This is due to changing the installation location, via WINEPREFIX. No biggie.I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10. It's very nice!
Problem: How in the world do I get rid of these unwanted list items? It's very hard to find the ones that are good.
Plan B: The easiest solution, so far, is to reinstall ubuntu and install these applications correctly the first time. Then I won't have all of those repeats.
I am a newbie to linux, my OS of choice is windows xp, my computers will not run windows 7 so as an alternative I am seriously thinking of changing to ubuntu after the windows support for xp finishes. with this in mind I have installed ubuntu 10.10 as a second OS on my pc. I like the speed, looks and ease of use of the OS. the only draw back is that I have a lot of windows applications that I run and sometimes beta test for a large british software company, I saw that a windows emulator was available (wine), downloaded, checked the documentation and the database, only to find the only software on the database was games. I have tried several applications (not games) only to get the error message "the file is not marked as executable". is there something I am missing or are they not supported by wine? and could all applications be supported in a future release?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am quite new to Linux and am currently running OpenSUSE 11.2.How do I install applications off the DVD?
I tried going to Yast --> add Packages Then I select the DVD. But most applications i want to install are being downloaded from online repos. Does the OpenSUSE 11.2 DVD have kernel-source?
I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just started using ubuntu and I have a question, is it possbile to install applications on the /media/ folders. That would be the other partitions of my hard drive, and still integrate it with the ubuntu, make it appear on the menu etc.I feel like my linux partition is running out, since I've only put few gb on it and my dvd rom is dead so I can't use gparted to edit the partition.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm going round everyone I know installing Ubuntu on their computers whether they like it or not, and I must say so far they all like it except. I have to spend 5 hours downloading and installing all the software they need to make their system run 'as good as windows'.
I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.
I just installed Ubuntu. I like it so far.
