I tried adjusting the resolution in Ubuntu so that it would fit better on my screen. The first one I tried worked ok, but when I tried a higher resolution the screen went black. Now I can't see anything on the screen so I can't change the resolution back to where it was. If I hit esc when booting up, is there anything I can do that will change it back to the default?
View 1 RepliesI downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
I've been using Ubuntu for about two years now, then suddenly today (after my PC accidently lost power) the screen resolution changed to 800x600 (it is, in fact, a widescreen monitor, and this resolution looked 'zoomed in'). The only two resolutions detected with xrandr were in the 4:3 ratio (800x600 and something worse). I followed some instructions, trying to reset the resolution to 1024x576.
I got as far as
$ xrandr --newmode "1024x576" ...
then,
$xrandr --addmode default 1024x576
but when I
$xrandr --output default --mode 1024x576
I a message to the effect of 'your screen can only support 800x600 or less'. Ah-ha, I thought, you stupid machine; this screen has had a greater resolution for over a year.
And so, from System->Preferences->Monitor, I forced the computer to switch to this new resolution. When prompted, I reset.
My current problem is that when I turn the computer on, the monitor displays a floating 'Input Not Supported' sign. I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd, and now all 'xrandr' and 'cvt' commands return:

My first priority is to get the computer back to it's less-broken 800x600 state;

The same happen after a suspend.
I noticed also that it takes several seconds before the battery status change when i connect it to the AC.

I changed may graphic card, earlier I used NVIDIA FX5500 with nvidia driver, now I was trying to use ATI Radeon 7500, but there are problems with graphic configuration. At first attempt server started but after I changed a screen resolution the monitor went blank. I restarted a computer but after the X server started immediately the monitor wnet blank. I found that for completely for me unknown reasons Xorg was trying to use an NVIDIA glx module with radeon driver. I removed this nvidia driver, I expected ubuntu would be able automatically to set up a proper configuration, but instead of ubuntu complained about a missing driver. I also tried manually to set up some basic config using Xorg -configure but after that the Xorg server was stuck.

When I try to reboot everything is as usual but the problem is that after grub. Nothing only a black screen no matter what i do. I doubt the keyboard layout change something but who knows. I run AMD phenom 940 X 4, 4 gig ram, Ati radeon HD 4870.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings me back safely to the GUI
So far I tried to modify the /etc/defaults/grub file to uncomment the grub resolution and the grub_terminal to no avail. Now at least it seams to waste some less time to load the grub (it took something like 15 sec before) but it lost the previous green/torquoise background and now it's white char on black background.
On a side note pressing C on the grub to reach the grub console gave me some answer I don't know how to deal with... I was trying to use vbeinfo but it didn't found the command and so I tried the insmod:

I'm setting up a Dell Inspiron One 2305 and I can't get the native monitor resolution to work without black borders. I'm also experiencing blurry text in Firefox (not sure if this is related). At most other resolutions it will expand to the edges of the monitor fully. Note that the desktop area doesn't extend into the border. I tried glxgears and noticed that it was only pulling 60fps -- figuring it needed drivers I installed the latest ATI drivers. On reboot I was given more options for resolutions however the native one still doesn't work properly. I looked around for troubleshooting tips and looked into xrandr output.

Using 'configure display settings' in Gnome, any time I picked a resolution that was 50, it would cause the borders. Any time I picked a resolution that was 60 AND xrandr listed a 60 and 59.9 and said 60 was the selected one, the borders would come back for those too.
So I tried
xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 59.9
Seeing as every resolution with 59.9 worked. However... This still resulted in borders.
on a 6-7 years old compaq laptop, connected to a brand new hp monitor i am having a mismatch with computer/monitor resolution.
before i had ubuntu 10.04 which could only run in x's safe graphics mode - allowing for full screen resolution but with handicapped graphics - for example videos fullscreen would be quirky and run with cpu at 100%, something which was no problem before 10.04.
then i tried ubuntu 10.10 and later lubuntu 10.10 (which had exactly the same problem); the monitor is running 1440x900 while the computer is rendering to only 1024x768 - leaving a huge black border on right and bottom of screen. the gfx is still crippled; videos fullscreen is quirky as before.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and had the dual monitors all set up using NVidia. When I was leaving my office I intended to lock my screen but instead switched to guest user . . . and now 1 of my monitors from my dual monitor set up has bunk resolution?
I have restarted and am logged in as administrator but I have no idea how to fix the resolution? The dual monitors have always been a problem for me. what in the x11/xorg.conf file I need to change?
I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I was away from my computer a friend changed my keyboard layout to a random layout thinking he could revert it via mouse actions only. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, my screen was locked. Now I cannot unlock my session to get back in to the KDE session to restore the correct keyboard layout.
However, I can log in to a console. In the console (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-F1), the keyboard layout is unchanged, so I can edit any text files and make any other changes required. How can I change the KDE keyboard layout from a console? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04. There is no .kderc file in my home directory. And Xorg.conf doesn't contain the settings either. I'm not sure where else to look.
Today I wanted to get rid of ugly GRUB and installed GRUB. I really like it, but there is one annoyance - I used these tips:URL...To have a Splash screen in Ubuntu in full 1680x1050 32-bit, and it worked perfectly. But when I installed BURG in the place of GRUB, I have 640x480 ugly boot splash as I had in the very beginning.Repeating the steps doesn't seem to help. What should I do?I should note that I easily changed BURG's resolution to 1680x1050 using 'R' while in BURG. 640x480 only applies to Splash after I choose Ubuntu.

It's the first time I was installing a linux. First I collected an extra hdd for the installation. I used the entire drive for ubuntu 9.10 installation. It installed without any problem except the special features were turned off. It was said that the special features and animations would start only if their is a sufficient graphics processor. I picked up a solution and from the hardware drivers option, installed the nvidia graphics card. Problem started when i restarted my pc. The resolution automatically changed into 800 X 600 px. I changed it to 1280X1024 (which is highest for my monitor). But when I restarted again, it again became 800X600 px. And it becomes like this everytime I restart.

what am i supposed to do? i have some driver installed by default, i can utilize compiz just fine, play videos on ..... at 1080p just fine, play World of Warcraft almost smooth, i believe that if that driver is installed, it will be even better, but im afraid that if i install it, my resolution will automatically change to something large and my monitor will go NO SIGNAL
Im running Ubuntu and I recently installed driver for my HD5700 Radeon and been having problems with the display I changed the resolution and now my mouse has disapeared at least I think it was after I changed the resolution. THe thing changing the resolution solved my other problem which was the text was blury or faded. What do I do to fix this how could it just disapear . When I right click the drop down menu does appear but there is no point. I can still open programs up but its seriousy frustrating.
OK so I just went into the terminal and typed compiz it returned: Xgl not present Xset q doesn't revel the location of the log file using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log Detected PCI ID for VGA Flags: bus master, VGA palette snoop,66MHZ, medium devsel, latency 64
Checking for texture_from pixmap : not present Trying again with indirect rendering... .. not present aborting and using fallback : usr/bin/metacity
What does this all mean im pretty sure something wrong because I have catalyst up and running and drivers I thought where running correctly.

(Video card is a nothing special Nvidia)
I want to change the default resolution of 1280x1024 to 1024x768. Setting at boot using the space bar or the KDE display (personal settings) does not survive the next boot. In yast or yast2, hardware, there is no monitor selection (something wrong here?).
Using root, run level 3, the command sax2 --vesa 1024x768 does nothing.
or sax2 -m 0=fbdev does nothing.
I had no problem with previous suse releases. What am I missing?
