I have been using ubuntu 10.04 64 bits for about 3 month. Today I change my keyboard layout, so I want to test if everything is ok so I reboot my computer. When I try to reboot everything is as usual but the problem is that after grub. Nothing only a black screen no matter what i do. I doubt the keyboard layout change something but who knows. I run AMD phenom 940 X 4, 4 gig ram, Ati radeon HD 4870.
View 3 RepliesWhile I was away from my computer a friend changed my keyboard layout to a random layout thinking he could revert it via mouse actions only. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, my screen was locked. Now I cannot unlock my session to get back in to the KDE session to restore the correct keyboard layout.
However, I can log in to a console. In the console (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-F1), the keyboard layout is unchanged, so I can edit any text files and make any other changes required. How can I change the KDE keyboard layout from a console? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04. There is no .kderc file in my home directory. And Xorg.conf doesn't contain the settings either. I'm not sure where else to look.
I changed my keyboard layout to arabic and now I can not login with my username and password. Also I am unable to type my root password. So I am completely locked out of my computer!!I was a overwhelmed by the information I found from searching forums. For now I'm working on making a bootable ubuntu CD so that I can run a live session and maybe fix this, but so far I am not having an easy time doing this
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation with english-only language but with a German keyboard.
So, once booted into my (only) account, I use the Keyboard Preferences app to change my Layout from US to German. Which works. I also remove the US keyboard so that the only layout left is German.
But upon a reboot, not only the US kbd is back in the layouts list, but the kbd also has defaulted back to US, so that I have to open the Kbd Prefs to again remove the US layout to get my German layout active again.
I also tried "Apply System-wide" and even logged in as root to make the same changes, but the system always goes back to US layout after a reboot.
This is also a problem when logging in after a reboot - I want the system to use German layout there, too.
So, how do I change the layout globally so that even at the login page I have my German layout already active?
I have a little problem when I restart my computer, the keyboard layout restart and get back to the default USA keyboard. Even if I delete it it's still back after the reboot. Maybe there a file that I can edit to get my default Canada setting to stay.Also, another problem that have been discussed thousand time before, I tried to add a drive to fstab without success, here what my fstab look like:Quote:

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I finally wanted to install Debian to my hardrive. Somehow, how to copy it to USB drive and make it boot-able. Installation process started without problems, but it failed on step called (something like) "Find files in CD-ROM" - what was expectable, since I used USB drive. So I wanted to unmount "/cdrom" and mount my USB drive there instead. I moved to another terminal, and searched for right device. "ls /dev" does not help, since I can't scroll to see other devices. Also kernel messages - can't scroll. Tried to change keyboard layout, still didn't work. I also can't use less, because there is no apt-get installed. Another problem is, that after trying to mount only viewable device (/dev/sda1), mount failed bacause I gave there invalid argument, or directory didn't exist. (Note that I created directory in /mnt/... or /media/... first). So I am asking - how can I remap keyboard to use those page up/down keys?
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen the battery status change to very low (red battery) or when i connect it to the AC, the display became black. (i have to move the mouse or press a button for to come back to the desktop)
The same happen after a suspend.
I noticed also that it takes several seconds before the battery status change when i connect it to the AC.
I tried adjusting the resolution in Ubuntu so that it would fit better on my screen. The first one I tried worked ok, but when I tried a higher resolution the screen went black. Now I can't see anything on the screen so I can't change the resolution back to where it was. If I hit esc when booting up, is there anything I can do that will change it back to the default?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
I have installed opensuse 11.3 a couple of weeks ago in 2 computers and both suffer of the same problem.In my asus laptop, i have a german keyboard. It is correctly recogniced as german keyboard by ev-dev, i guess. (ev-dev managed). But i need to write some spanisch symbols too, like accents (á © í ³ ? ñ¬ ·hich in a normal linux, they do work. For some reason, after rebooting, or after some time of having it running, the keyboard layout resets to an invalid setup, here accents get not over the letter (?a ?e ?i ?o ?u), so i have to select my layout again in the gnome control center.
With my other computermore or less the same.Its a desktop PC with an spanisch keyboard. But i thinck i picked German keyboard during installation and now it starts always with german with some sort of 5 secs delay when setting it. I have to pick spanisch and i always delete the german layout, but after some time having it running, it resets to the previusly deleted german layout.
having problems with my keyboard layout since upgrade from F11 to F12. When I reboot and login into gnome I have to switch back to my layout as it has been set to USA default layout.

This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.

I just updated from FC 10 to FC 12 via install/upgrade disk, and when re-booted the screen is then black (at the point that it should display logins). I think it may be due to nvidia driver in FC 10 not being upgraded, because I think I compiled it from nvidia rather from yum install. Anybody else have this problem? BTW, it is a dual boot with Win XP, but has never caused a similar problem before.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to update my main computer from Ubuntu 10.0 to 11.04. I wish I could remember what it said, but it crashed during the update. The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. I am going to try a fresh install. For some reason I am leaning to the power manager, but I am no where near sure.

(think is a BIOS error....but this is what I've read with a Google search.....). After the first start I've make the update (suggested by the OS) and, after make the reboot....same problem. I see a black screen and the power light of the HD seems run....but don'a appear any sort of screen immages/text.

I put Slackware 13 and the scenarios is:
1. I start the computer and after startx I got black screen, the keyboard is not responding the led of the display is yellow etc. Now I reset the computer,
2. Booting Windoze
3. Choose Restart not Shutdown from Windoze
4. Booting Slack
5. startx works fine, the X server is starting and working great.

After installation and reboot I get only black screen when X tries to start and keyboard doesn't work however when I press power button then the system shuts down properly after a while. I have noticed this for the first time on Hardy after installing Catalyst 9.9 and since then I have the same problem on Karmic and Catalyst 9.10/9.11 as well. View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

I'm a used Ubuntu user on a pc, and I like the french keyboard layout because it allows me to type accentued characters easily.I found a win-fr keyboard layout but it's much like windows and not so good.I found xmodmap.fr keyboard layout and I'd like to know if it was possible use it with my Mac SL 10.6.5, maybe I could do xmodmap xmodmap.fr or a way to convert to mac layout file.
