I see a black screen and the power light of the HD seems run....but don'a appear any sort of screen immages/text.

openSUSE 11.2 i586, ASUS P3-P5G43 Rev. R1.04G Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400@3.00GHz, Intel G45/G43 Chipset The Problem: The screen is for the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) standard. This resolution was detected, at the initial install and later with sax2. It shows the desktop with a 1 inch wide black area along the right border of the screen and that is exactly what is missing at the left border (i.e. invisible). It is like the desktop is shifted to the left of the screen. As far as it is visible the image is crisp and clean. Lowering the resolution to 1280x960 works ok, but the aspect ratio is no longer correct. I have checked the archives and found Intel integrated graphics - openSUSE Forums but trying different hints from the thread did not help.

This is about an oracle application server running on RHEL platform(Linux prod.xyz.com 2.6.18-194.el5PAE #1 SMP Mon Mar 29 20:19:03 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux). All of a sudden all the application services shut down abnormally on weekend. On the first day of the week, business users were unable to login as a result. For root cause investigation, we were unable to findout anything in the application logs. But were trying to get reboot/shutdown information from the system.....but we are bit confused with the info in /var/log/wtmp by using 'last' command(output given bellow):
[root@prod ~]# last reboot |head -2
reboot system boot 2.6.18-194.el5PA Mon Aug 8 11:26 (1+03:10)
reboot system boot 2.6.18-194.el5PA Sun Aug 7 17:27 (17:55)
We doubt the server might have gone down on Sunday(7th Aug) but there's also an entry of 8th Aug, on which day the server was running fine, no reboot/shutdown happened. If there any other way of getting info on reboot timings.

I just updated from FC 10 to FC 12 via install/upgrade disk, and when re-booted the screen is then black (at the point that it should display logins). I think it may be due to nvidia driver in FC 10 not being upgraded, because I think I compiled it from nvidia rather from yum install. Anybody else have this problem? BTW, it is a dual boot with Win XP, but has never caused a similar problem before.

I am running a dell poweredge 2600 in which i just now did a fresh install of Centos 5.5 KDE. The install went perfectly with no hiccups or errors. I reboot the server and centos dose its normal checking everything and giving a Green"OK" or Red"Error" and everything seems to be fine. I then get to a black screen with a X mouse cursor, i can move the cursor freely and i can turn the Num Lock key on and off and i can do a Ctrl+Alt+F5 and then reboot with a Ctrl+Alt+Del smoothly, but i just cant get the centos to boot up all the way into the GUI.

I have been using ubuntu 10.04 64 bits for about 3 month. Today I change my keyboard layout, so I want to test if everything is ok so I reboot my computer. When I try to reboot everything is as usual but the problem is that after grub. Nothing only a black screen no matter what i do. I doubt the keyboard layout change something but who knows. I run AMD phenom 940 X 4, 4 gig ram, Ati radeon HD 4870.

I tried to update my main computer from Ubuntu 10.0 to 11.04. I wish I could remember what it said, but it crashed during the update. The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. I am going to try a fresh install. For some reason I am leaning to the power manager, but I am no where near sure.

So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

The computer was working fine last night, when I woke up this morning (I leave it on) it was making strange noises through the speakers and I had a blank screen, restarted a few times had some page full of code and wouldn't move on from there, I went out came back started it up and it did everything normally except instead of a desktop I had a black screen, however strangely enough when I press the power button on the PC a shut down menu comes up, and the mouse works and I can select from the options. I am on an Nvidia ION tho. How do I boot into a safe mode as such? as at the moment I'm using a ubuntu live CD to read the forums!
On the GRUB menu, seclect "Ubuntu (recovery mode)" (not exact wording). You'll get scrolling boot messages until you get to a screen with a grey box and some options. Use the arrow keys to select "x failsafe graphics mode" or something of the like. Press enter and you'll probably get a message that your card can't be detected or something. Press okay and continue. Your screen will be messed up, but you'll be in. It probably isn't the same problem, as you don't have an ATI card and can see a shutdown menu, but good Luck!
How do you bring up the GRUB menu? My PC isnt dual booted so I never see any menus at all, I thought all I had to do was press F8 during boot up? No, F8 is Windows. Hold down shift when booting to see the menu. Downloaded & Installed the 10.6 driver and everything is working fine. Unminimizing apps works much faster with this driver . However, /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial results in
Code:
Found fglrx primary device section
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-2
/usr/bin/aticonfig: Writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' failed. Bad file descriptor.
Right now I've tried what "jxtreme" suggested on quote nr2 however when I go into recovery mode I get a load of code scrolling through the screen as its supposed to but I never get any box with options as he says, it just gets to a point where there's a small white cursor flashing at me half way down the screen and it stays there...

This morning I did some recommended updates for Lucid with update manager. This afternoon at start up I get a black screen after booting. I can hear the sound effect for the login, and if I key in my password, I hear the Ubuntu signature tune, i.e. it is booting and starting up. But my screen is just black with the arrow-shaped pointer, which I can move across the screen with the mouse. Other than that, nothin

I have installed Red Hat 5.3 64-bit linux.
I have a program that needs 32-bit libtcl8.4.so and libtk8.4.so.
I have the Red Hat supplemental DVD that has the tcl-devel-8.4.13-3.fc6.i386.rpm and the tk-devel-8.4.13-5.el5_1.1.i386.rpm
I tried to install the tcl-devel-8.4.13-3.fc6.i386.rpm package using the following command: "rpm -ivh --force tcl-devel-8.4.13-3.fc6.i386.rpm
I get the following error message: "Warning: tcl-devel-8.4.13-3.fc6.i386.rpm header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 37017186 error: failed dependencies: libtcl8.4.so is needed by tcl-devel-8.4.13-3.fc6.i386.rpm"
I have scoured the internet and everything says to install these packages to get the tcl and tk libraries.

I have a problem after installing Debian and running it on my machine. Instead of taking me to a splash login screen, it instead remains a black screen like a console where I type in my username and password, and it remains in this black command line mode beginning ben@ben-desktop:~$. Like it does in a terminal. What can I do to resolve this? This is completely new to me and hasn't happened to me in Ubuntu or Mint. I am familiar with using the terminal for the odd task but obviously I can't use it like this without a visible desktop.

I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop (amd64) on this brand new system:
I connected the Dell ST2410 24" Full HD Widescreen LCD to the HDMI port on the ATI card and Windows 7 boots up just fine.
So then I put in the "ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso" CD in drive and reboot the system. I see the Ubuntu logo with the dots for a while and then the LCD goes black. The LCD reports that there is no signal from the system. The power light in front of the LCD goes from white to amber. The keyboard stops responding.
I power off everything, remove the Ubuntu CD and reboot the system and it works fine again with Windows 7.
The CD has no problems. At boot time, I checked it for defects and it reports no errors. At boot time, I used this same CD to check the system for memory errors. No memory errors. I used the same CD to install Ubuntu on other systems and had no problems.
The 16X DVDRW Drive has no problems. In Windows 7 it can play CDs and DVDs.
