General :: Firefox Takes Forever To "look Up" Address?
Dec 22, 2010
I just got my gentoo system up, and it is very fast, except that when I use firefox, it takes forever to "lookup" the address. It eventually goes through. I am suspecting my resolv.conf file, but it is full of dns server addresses.

I'm running 9.1 and Firefox 3.5.7 with a few addons (better privacy, ghostery, cookieculler, adblock, personas) on a HP 8710p laptop with 4gb of ram.I use it to browse the internet at work, and I have it up for about 8-9 hours every day, during the course of the day I will open and close tons of tabs. At the end of the day when I'm getting ready to leave, I close out of firefox, and it takes one of my duo core processors all the way to 100% and sit at the top of my processes in my Conky for 5-10 minutes before it finally closes. I've been googling for a couple days and have yet to come up with anything,

I hope somebody can find a solution for the following problem: I tried to install fedora 14 from the life cd on a Dell 6400 with windows XP already installed on it. During the installation process I wanted to shrink the ntfs partition of windows. The actual used size of the windows partition was well below the one I shrinked it to. But the shrinking takes forever ( + 7 hours ) and is still running, which does not seems normal to me. Any recommendations on how to proceed ( solve ) the problem? Processors are running at 99%, so it seems to perform some work. Can this process be cancelled, without harming the windows?

i am wanting to use Firefox to connect to my smb shares. However, i keep getting this error message: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (smb) isn't associated with any program. My client configuration is as follows: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.8pre) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Shiretoko/3.5.8preI tried the instructions below to try and fix the problem with no success: Quote: From [URL]
Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.
As name you must type: "network.protocol-handler.external.smb" with a value of "true". After that you must do the same thing over again, but this time choose "New -> String", type the name: "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with a value of the path to the application you wish to use for browsing network shares. If you use KDE, this will typically be "/usr/bin/konqueror".

My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?

a few months ago i did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 64-bits. it works perfectly. i'm using firefox 5.0, and in about it says mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0.
every now and then, firefox behaves like a runaway train and starts using up all available memory, and using 100% processor time. this has been going on for a week or so. the only remedy is to kill firefox and restart it.
i'm not sure what causes this problem, but i am starting to suspect that it may be caused by flash, java, or some other plug-in or add-on that i have installed.
my add-ons are:
- adblock plus 1.3.9
- adblock plus pop-up addon 0.2.7
- delicious bookmarks 2.3.1
- delicious extension 2.3.1
- flash-aid 2.1.1
- global menu bar integration 1.0.6
- memory restart 1.4
- stumbleupon 3.91
- ubuntu firefox modifications 0.9.1
with the exception of memory restart 1.4 all these add-ons have been installed for a long time, without ever causing any problems. the problems started before installing memory restart.
my java version is icedtea, installed from the repository. i'm frequently using sweet home 3d (a java program) that runs without any problem. it doesn't make a difference whether i have sh3d running or not, the ff problem occurs regardless.
i also have installed ubuntu restricted extras version 43. videos videos don't cause problems. vimeo videos cause problems on occasion when switching to high definition and/or to full screen, but that is a known vimeo problem.
the problems certainly start when i don't use my computer for a longer period of time. i have disabled the screen saver/energy saver, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. today i had the problem shortly after visiting a website, reason why i'm starting to suspect that the problem could be linked to some plug-in that website uses.

Firefox has taken the whole screen and has no controls top right to close or resize the window. Also it hides the panel at the bottom. Whenever hovering over something with a tooltip, the whole screen goes black for a fraction of a second. Otherwise it seems to operate normally.
Not cured by:
restarting FF
rebooting
re-installing FF
FF 3.6.2
Arch + KDE 4.4
HP 8510W laptop / NVidia Quadro 570 with reasonable current NVidia official driver.

My Firefox used to start instantly, or at least near instant, but since yesterday it took about 30 sec to launch. Opening subsequent windows is near instant, but once all windows are closed it would take a long time to open again.
When I open it up in a terminal, it has absolutely no error message, clean start up and shutdown.
I turned up the CPU clock speed from 1.2GHz to 2.0GHz and it doesn't seem to help. Other programs starts fine too, so I kind of ruled out performance issue.
Yesterday I also tinkered with compiz settings and also installed the cairo dock and some media codecs. But I can't pinpoint when does it happen exactly, I also struggle to draw any relationship if there is any. And if it matters Firefox is 3.6.10 and Ubuntu is 10.04.

I've just installed a fresh copy of 11.4 and the updates are driving me crazy. My internet connection is up, but the download stops and goes, and when I try using firefox, it takes a minute to even start to load any page. I have the system monitor up and it is telling me that the network is not receiving anything except for these bursts of data aprox. every 30 seconds.

I've taken the kernel 2.6.33.3 and edited the .config file to take out most of the compatibility etc. that I will not be using. I'm run the makes and updated grub. I go to boot it runs through most of the way until I get the following:Quote:/bin/plymouthd: symbol lookup error: /bin/plymouthd: undefined symbol:ply_chara could not read byte from child: SuccessNo root device foundBoot has failed, sleeping forever.'m fairly new to Linux and still more of a dabbler. (Though this seemed more difficult than "Who is root" so I didn't put this in the newbie thread.)Any ideas for what might be wrong?I've tried looking in the config file from something that relates, but they have all been included (Y) in the module.

I think I'm being attacked by a hacker: The mouse changes its position on the desktop, some windows fire and come to the front without a call, the address bar of the FireFox is hidden. Is there anything that can be done? I think the hacker works at a distro that i used some time ago.

I'm trying to create an application that monitors, among other things, what site the user is currently viewing. I would like to know if there is any way to get the current URL from the Firefox's address bar on a Linux machine. I know that under Windows I can use the DDE server approach, but under Linux this task is proving very tricky. I've considered an approach involving an extension to Firefox, but this would require the user to install the said extension himself. Which is not something I want. If an extension can be installed by a different program's installer than that could work, but I don't know if that's possible or not.

I would like to set my FireFox up so that when I type something in the address bar that is not a url, it will automatically do a google search. I have done this before, but that was a while ago and I can't remember what settings to change in about:config.Currently, when I type something that is not a url, it performs a search and then automatically opens the first web page that it finds, like a "I'm feeling lucky" search. I just want to see a google list.

I use google search in the firefox address bar by pasting [url] in about:config > keyword.URL
But it automatically changes to "chrome://browser-region/locale/region.properties" in some hours or the next day and I cannot search using the address bar. I have to change it back again to make it work. This is really annoying.

Since I updated to Karmic, I noticed a very annoying problem that forces me to restart Firefox every 20 minutes or so: When the cursor is located inside the address bar (CRTL+L), I always type one or two characters, a drop down menu appears with most visited links that contain these characters, I press <down-arrow>, <Enter> and go to one of my usual links. I use this all the time, which allows me to go to me usual links in a second or two. The problem is that this feature stops working after browsing for some time: no drop-down menu appears and pressing the down-arrow does nothing.
The only other problem that happens in coincidence is that you have to click 2 or 3 times on the 'arrow-down' button on the right side of the address bar before you get a drop-down menu with the most visited links (this normally happens on the first click). The problem appears at random moments (typically after some 10 to 20 minutes of browsing, but sometimes earlier) and disappears when I restart FF. I tried clearing the history, but that does not change anything. Does anyone else see this problem and knows how to fix it?
My setup:
Toshiba notebook, 32 bit
up to date Karmic
FF 3.5.6, with some add-ons: adblock plus, bugmenot, all-in-one gestures, xmarks and some dictionaries, all working without any problems.
