fscheck is quite annoying, since it usually occurs when I reboot my system performing administration tasks. do I actually need fscheck if Im using the ext3 file system? if not how would I extend the period between checks or just turn it off altogether?

I deleted the Windows partitions and created a new partition scheme: Swap, root and one additional partition on the first disk, one large partition on the second disk. Install runs fine but upon reboot I get "Error loading operating system". Booting off a Windows floppy and running FDisk shows that the root partition is marked as active.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a working RHEL in /dev/sda1 and a newly constructed Ubuntu Lucid in /dev/sda2. I'm going to edit the grub config and reboot the server into the new Ubuntu. However, I'm not 100% sure that the new distro can boot. And since my only way to access the server is via SSH, I need the network to be up too.
How can I configure Grub and Ubuntu so that if the server fails to boot, it will automatically reboot into the old RHEL? Currently using GRUB 0.93, but I can upgrade it if needed.
Update: In the end, no boot failure occured. But without the insurance from this, I wouldn't have attempted [URL]..
i have a dell inspiron laptop lap top with windows7 os.my hardisk is 320gb capacity.now i want to install fedora as my secondary os. I tried fedora12 but instaltion terminated abnormally with the message safe reboot needed recievied signal 3. i have 20 gb unallocated space in my disk.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have (had) Debian Testing running on a 250GB IDE hard drive, partitioned normally.
I also have 4x 1TB drives in a raid 5 using mdadm, and 2x 500GB drives in a raid 1 also with mdadm.
I put the two arrays in lvm using:
I then used "lvcreate" to make storage/backup 300GB, and the rest went to storage/media (approx. 2TB usable). I put an xfs filesystem on both and mounted them.
All was working fine until the system drive shorted out and died on me this morning. As far as I can tell, all my other drives and everything else is fine. I do a daily rsnapshot of the filesystem, which of course is residing on storage/backup (stupid, I know). So I have full backups of everything, but I'll have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall Debian before I can restore everything.
I've reinstalled before and simply reassembled mdadm arrays and remounted them before with no problems, but this is the first time I've used lvm, so I'm not sure what I have to do to restore everything. Is it as simple as reinstalling the system then doing a:
I am on Mint8. Discovered that the error message was caused by the program thinking that the true date was 10 days ahead of the date that shows on the display. And the incorrect date goes right along, changing every 24 hrs, the true date never catching up. Short term solution was to set the date 1 yr ahead which then showed on the display. Long term (?) solution fsck eventually worked. We shall see how long.

I have been using ubuntu 10.10 32 bit. I thought of giving 64 bit a try. I downloaded the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 from the ubuntu website and burned it in to a cd. Then i boot from cd. But unfortuntely i am getting terminal instead of installtion or try options. It says : General errormounting filesystem" and then Lots of " Authentication failure". I typed startx in the terminal but i didnt get any gui.
I am using hp dv6 laptop with windows 7 preinstalled. Core i5 processer, nvidia g105m graphics card and 4gb ram. Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit works fine.
I don't know the whether the problem is because of my graphics card. But it works fine for me in 32 bit. The driver i am using is of version 260.19..06. I really want to use 64 bit OS.
I need to know: how do not automatically restart GNU/Linux after a critical system failure(kernel panic). For some reason the pc is rebooted, actually throws the error screen Reboot just moments before, but I can't to read it before you reboot.

I am not able to access the harddrive. I am very new to ubuntu.
At 4:00 pm on 4/1/2009 I accepted the offer to dowload and install a number of small improvements. This has always worked in the past. This time there were a few problems with the install, but I went ahead and rebooted. It stopped at grub, stage2.
I am now trying the rescue feature of my install CD. I will report on this later.
As for the always possible hardware failure, I have a raid setup, so I was not expecting this.
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to run a Java Applet on a web page I discovered that Java is not installed in 10.04 and the SUN Java JRE is not available to install any more so I installed the OpenJDK and IcedTea Plugin.
Most applets work fine but one specific, for me a very important one, dos not. Specifically the log inn applet used in my net bank: URl... This applet runs fine in Windows.I have started Firefox in a terminal window but do not get any error messages there when trying to start the applet.The applet runs fine in Opera (though slow start up) in Ubuntu 10.04. Opera does not use plug in but run the applet directly from JRE. This indicates that the problem could be in the IcedTea plugin.
I'm trying to mount a filesystem when the system boots, so i won't need to mount it everytime..
So what I did was copying the line of the filesystem I wanted to mount on startup from /etc/mtab:

And pasted it as it is, in the /etc/fstab file. when the system booted, it didn't work. not only that, I wasn't able to mount the filesystem at all, (it gave me some kind of an error) so I removed the line from fstab file and it all back to normal. how can I mount this filesystem on boot? (i'm using Fedora 12)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for insite on how it might be possible to grow an existingvolume/partition/filesystem while it's in active use, and without having to add additional luns/partitions to do it.For example the best way I can find to do itcurrently, and am using this in production, is you have a system using LVM managing a connected LUN (iSCSI/FC/etc), with a single partition/filesystem residing on it.To grow this filesystem (while it's active) you have to add a new LUN to the existing volume group, and then expand the filesystem. To date I have not found a way to expand a filesystem that is hosted by a single LUN.
For system context, I'm running a 150 TB SAN that has over 300 spindles, to which about 50 servers are connected. It is an equal mix of Linux, Windows, and VMware hosts connected via both FC & iSCSI... With both Windows & VMware, the aforementioned task of expanding a single LUN and having the filesystem expanded is barely a 1 minute operation that "Just Works".If you can find me a sweet way to seamlessly expand a LUN and have a Linuxfilesystem expanded (without reboot/unmount/etc)I have cycles to test out any suggested methods/techniques, and am more than happy to report the results for anyone else interested. I think this is a subject that many people would like to find that magic method to make all our lives much easier
I have been having problems with filesystem corruption on my eeepc 1000H for a long time now. I have tried using different filesystems, kernels and distributions (arch, slackware) to no effect. I am starting to grow suspicious that this problem lies somewhere else, as I haven't seen anyone else having similar problems in such a variety of scenarios.
I have tried testing my ram using memtest86+, didn't come up with anything after a full run through. I also have tried using e2fsck -c to check for bad blocks, it finds none. I had a go at using smartctl but wasn't really sure what I was doing. I did a long test and it came up with nothing anyway.
This problem is in addition to the problems I've been having with my intel graphics chip and KMS. A lot of the time there are lockups when booting into X, which can only be gotten out of by a hard reset. This is sometimes what causes the original filesystem errors. I've stopped messing around with KMS for now to eliminate this but my current system in unbootable. I'm guessing my disk is wrecked but have as yet seen no definitive proof. Can anyone recommend anything that I should do?
I am currently on ext4 with a custom kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (the stock kernel shipping with slackware does not have the elantech extension for psmouse included). When I was using arch, I was just using the stock kernels.
I'm trying to come up with a startup init script that will check to see if the system was shut down gracefully, or if it is rebooting from a poweroff or something similar?Anyone know of a way to check for this condition with the least amount of room for false positives or vice versa?My intial thought is just a startup script that will will check for a file on startup, and on a proper reboot/shutdown just touch the file. The situation is I removed the ADSL card from my desktop as I have no use for it for the moment. I am guessing that the motherboard is still trying to detect the Sangoma ADSL card. What is the best way to resolve this problem, uninstall the drivers for the ADSL card or change the settings in the system configuration files?
The system is not affected by this removal, just get prompted regularly about this error as configured in the kerneloops client.
I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a Dell pc without issue, but on reboot or startup from being off it doesn't load the os. It flashes error: no such disk then leaves me a blank screen with a flashing cursor. For some reason it's not seeing the drive.

I was trying to fix a problem with my backlight per a help forum on the subject and I screwed up a boot command. I rebooted and the purple Ubuntu screen goes to boxes and a black screen with only my number lock light flashing. I looked under the edit command option at boot up and this is the code that I get;

So, I am having certain issues regarding Debian installation. Since my Wi-Fi card, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, requires non-free drivers not provided within Debian install image, I am bound to use USB stick during installation process to get those drivers, iwlwifi-3965-1.ucode and iwlwifi-3965-2.ucode, to enable Wi-FI on my system. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get debian-installer to detect drivers present on the machine. I have tried virtually everything - downloading drivers from multiple sources, renaming drivers properly, using ext4 instal of fat32, using gpt instead of msdos, placing files in /firmware instead of root directory - but no matter what I do, the outcome is the same. USB stick seems to be working properly. Am I bound to downloading non-free image now, or is there a solution?
