I am using Cent Os 5. I want that the system should shutdown automatically at 7:00 pm daily and next day I manually turn on the system.I have google it but the syntax is not clear.
I use # crontab -e
and write the command
0 19 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now
I does't apply the command what is * * * after 19
How to turn on system on particular time? I have to start download process at morning 2'o clock. I can use crontab to schedule my download but how to turn on system automatically?

well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to turn on the system bell (pc speaker) in xterm. I have the bell working in console (text mode, not under X), and with X running, even firefox can use the pc speaker (it beeps, when I enter a search term which is not found). Only xterm doesn't seem to work.

If I run xterm with the +vb option, it doesn't help either (I'm testing it with printf "a"). What am I missing? How can I make xterm use my pc speaker as bell?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is for all of you who are having problems getting sound out of the PC Speaker, as far as getting the system beep or system bell. In Karmic (9.10), a change was made to get rid of the system beeps and disable the pc speaker. Unfortunately for people who liked (or more likely need) the beeps, the changes occurred in multiple places and are not that easy to find. The pc speaker and beeps were disabled in response to this bug. I believe there were other bugs dealt with here because not everything that was done seems to be covered, if that makes sense.
This bug was created in response, in hope of getting the beeps turned back on. This post by one of the developers has some pretty comprehensive instructions for getting the beep back on. I want to note right now, that I did not have to apply his patch to get the beeps back on where I wanted them. It may already have been included in an update, or was obviated by something else I did. I realize this is pretty fragmented, and you may or may not want or need to go as far as I did with this. When I get a chance to do a new clean install of Karmic (maybe in a vm or something) I intend to go back over these instructions and try to create a synthesis of them that should work for certain. If I can, I'll figure out a way to script it.
One other thing I should point out. I didn't get the bug where I had to reload the pcspkr module on every boot, so that must be fixed. (I did have to remove it from the blacklist so it would be loaded on boot, but I didn't have to kill and reload it or add it to rc.local like some people did in those descriptions). I also did not get the bug of an endless loop of beep sound or multiple beep sounds, but that only happened to people who followed the directions to change the system beep to another sound.
I have tried to write my files to 2 (2GB each) USB sticks and both turned into a Read-Only-File-System. Then I tried with my Memory Stick Duo and it also turned into that. So I give my last try with my SanDisk HC Memory Card (from photo camera) and resulted the same. I can copy the files of those portable storages into my HDD fine but not write into them or delete any files inside those portable storages.

I have searched for a solution to this problem but no luck. I am running FC 11 and out-of-the-box gnome. At first the screensaver worked normally, shutting off the screen after 5 mins. Now it does not do so. I found the following command line suggestion in the forums, and it looks like it may point to a problem -- the screensaver is inactive, but how to make it active? I may be misunderstanding the term inactive, of course. Logically, the screensaver would have to be inactive if I am typing a command.

But the query returns the same thing as before.
The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that using the "appearances" background facility I added a couple dozen pictures that I thought I might use as screen background. Not long after that I discovered that my screen did not go black after 5 mins as expected. Not sure this correlation has any causal meaning, however. I then tried various things, finally returning to the plain (blue) default. That seemed to fix it for a short while, then after a couple of days, the bad or non-behavior returned -- the screensaver does not work.
(update -- I removed all the extra background pics and it makes no difference.)
My system runs all the time, but I don't want the screen to be on all the time.
I installed fedora 13 in its LXDE flavor in my laptop. I noticed when it goes to save energy mode, the TFT retro-illumination is not turned off. The display just stays black with light. How to make the display to turn off when the system enters in save energy mode?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed this system (Xubuntu 9.04 x64) several months ago, I had two identical SATA hard drives, but I didn't do a RAID1 mirror then because I didn't want to wipe out my old OS (FreeBSD) on the second drive in case I needed to retrieve something from it. So I installed Xubuntu on the first drive (sda) and for all that time, the second drive (sdb) has been running but unused, and fdisk showed that the FreeBSD partition was still there.
A couple weeks ago, my separate backup server failed, so as a short-term backup I did a 'dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb' to make an exact copy of my Xubuntu install on drive A upon drive B (the former FreeBSD drive), then mounted /dev/sdb1 on /mnt to make sure it worked successfully. So far so good, but I still didn't set up any RAID stuff.
Several days later, I needed to reboot because of a security upgrade, and when I logged out, the GUI froze up. Thinking not too much of it, I restarted the system, and it came up fine. But the next day, I discovered that I was missing several days worth of email and recent files. In fact, everything had been reverted back to a state from several days earlier --- I think from the day I copied the first drive to the second one. Files I created in the interim were gone, and files I deleted in the interim were back. It was as if the first drive was 'restored' from the second one without my knowledge.
Doing some testing now, I find that if I create a new file on /dev/sda1 and then mount /dev/sdb1, the file also exists on sdb1. It's as if they're acting as a RAID1 mirror, without my telling it to do so. Could it just decide to do RAID1 because it sees there are two identically partitioned drives? That seems dangerous. And if they were really in a RAID mirror, why would it let me mount them separately? It's very strange.
I don't mind if it's suddenly decided to do RAID, but I want to make sure it's not going to 'restore' a more current filesystem from an older one again, if that's indeed what happened.
I am in the process of installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Compaq Presario 5900Z desktop, circa 1999.
Because of a change to some IDE/SCSI drivers during 2008, no Linux distribution from the fall/autumn of 2008 onward will install on this system using their standard images, every distro I've tried to install this way would report I/O errors. There was a bug report filed on this at Launchpad some time ago. Running the images as Live CD's would work, but the actual install would always fail.
I began this by installing Ubuntu 7.10, then upgrading it to 8.04 LTS. The next step is to upgrade to 10.04 LTS.
When booting up, there is a console message that briefly appears that the BIOS (being from 1999) fails the cutoff (2000) and to enable ACPI, acpi=force must be added to the boot parameters.
The issue is when powering the system off, it will not power off by itself. At one time, there had been a different distro installed on this same system alongside Windows XP and both systems correctly powered the system off when shutting down. Ubuntu keeps the system powered on and I would have to hold in the power button for up to 10 seconds, until it powers off.
I do not know if simply adding acpi=force to the boot parameters will fix this, but I also do not know where to place this. The other distro used on this system actually came with a GUI interface that would allow for something to be added to the parameters. I cannot find anything similar in Ubuntu.
So, my questions are:
1. Will adding acpi=force properly turn the PC off at shutdown?
2. If so, where can this be permanently added to the boot parameters?
Grub won't automatically boot my system... the timer is set to 1 second and the default OS is chosen, it just sits there completely without a timer!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had to power off my Centos 5.5 box (ungraceful shutdown). When it came back up, three apps popped up: "Welcome to the Gnome Help Browser" (which is Yelp). In another desktop, Konqueror is waiting for a login. This happens every time I restart my system. I haven't been able to figure out how to stop this. Every time I've shut down my system since I had to bring it down hard, it's been gracefully and neither of those apps was running.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have multiple OpenSuSE 11.2 systems. With some files being on one system I would like to have another computer to have the files as well. Is there a way to have the files copied to the other system automatically? FTP is one way but it is too cumbersome. I am thinking of something like disk or directory mirroring. Does OpenSuSE have something like that?
If it was real time mirroring that would be better. I.e if a write to one file on one system is done, then this would be done on the other system with the same directory/file.
If I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

I've been frustrated with several problems I've been experiencing with Karmic Koala. The one I'll mention in this post is the fact that it randomly decides to adjust the system clock ahead 6 hours. I believe this began happening when I set the location for the system time that displays in the top panel. I'm guessing that the 6 hours is the fact that I'm in the US Central Time zone.
I am using ubuntu operating system, recently I am getting one problem when i am using the system . system is automatically going to command line mode it is asking user name and password. After entering user name and password I can able to use the system only in command line mode. Again when i restart I am getting gui as usual. Please help me to resolve the problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had problems with my old Ubuntu version,so I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. As I wanted to keep my old files I didn't choose the erase the hard disk and install option so the installation system created automatically another partition.
Now that I've installed it I want to delete my old Ubuntu version AND keep my old files, or at least the most important ones (videogames saved games, openoffice documents, music and video). BUT there's one big problem, I can't start the old partition, if I try to run it it runs OK except that I don't see anything in the screen (yes, I listen to the Ubuntu start sound and so, but can't see anything). It happend before, that's why I changed it.
Is there any way to automatically activate the wifi at system startup without using the keyboard switch? I have tried this script in gedit, saved as .run and added to startup applications but it doesn't work:

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 (was having similar issues in 10.04 too) on his PC and generally it's working just fine. The problem is system tray icons disappears/rearranges automatically but the biggest issue is that NetworkManager applet icon disappears and somehow internet stops working every now and then...Is there any way to "weld" NetworkManager etc icons to the Gnome Panel/taskbar ? so that they can not be removed without entering the password?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having difficulties mounting an FTP address to my file system automatically during boot. After a bit of research I have discovered a package called curlftpfs, I've installed this package using aptitude and I had no errors.
I've successfully mounted an FTP address manually using curlftpfs at the command line and proved to myself that this is working as it should...However, I can't get this to mount automatically and I am receiving the following error during boot when I try and mount it through /etc/fstab...
Error connecting to ftp: Failed to connect to (IP address of server): Network is unreachable
My research indicates this package should be able to do this.
I'm still a learner when it comes to Linux, but could this be because TCP/IP services are not started at the time of mounting the filesystems? I've tried a continuous ping at this computer whilst it is booting and I don't get a response until after /etc/fstab has been processed. If this is the reason, can I start them these processes earlier?
Another option would be to have a script/command run when the computer boots, but prior to MySQL loading. If this is possible, it would also satisfy my problems.
