Duriing an up date pc requested a restart to complete. Then it rebooted so far and has stopped.I have a disc that I installed Ubuntu with and vaguely remeber the operating system could be run from the disc. Can I put the disc in and start the pc from it and still read what I had on the Hard drive?Or is everything gone and lost?Prior to the calamity the pc was running Ubuntu 9.10 and nothing else.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.
Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.
I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

If possible so that I can update my system. Due to this problem i'm not able to install libqt4-opengl which required for virtualbox.
Also, an off topic question, I can't autocomplete words in shell specifically after sudo apt-get and in some cases after sudo also. The autocompletion is working in all the other cases.
The last two times that I updated I received a failure notification for gzip. I do not know what I did to cause that to happen;
I recently downloaded " hearts for gnome " which is a gzip file but i was not able to install it. Perhaps that jammed up the gzip!!
I grabbed an old laptop (a Dell Latitude D600) and installed Ubuntu 10.10 from the CD.Straight from the CD, it worked fine, including a reboot. I then ran an update, and now booting gives me the following message:

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.
The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.
After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:

This morning my update manager came up so I clicked to update. About halfway through the update an error message popped up & said to restart my system. I restarted my system and now have a black screen with the following message:

I read around earlier & tried to use a Ubuntu disk and reboot but I have the same error.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron computer, it's just over a year old. I keep up with all the updates but unfortunately cannot say for sure which updates were taking place because I just hit the update box.
After a kernel update ubuntu would not boot. So found this procedure using the live update cd. Update grub.cfg & delete everything down to but not including the first line that starts with 'menuentry' . Then boot works ok. A couple of weeks ago it started on my notebook. Is anyone @ hq listening & able to fix this problem permanently?

I just completed the latest updates to Fedora 14 - I have mono and wine on the system as well - so they were also updated. Now the only screen I can get is the failsafe (bash).
How do I recover my KDE desktop? (I noticed there were some updates for the KDE as well). I suspect something has failed during the update (selinux was also updated).
I created a separate /home partition after installing Karmic on a new computer using this HowTo :

I copied all the files from /home/user using
find . -depth -print0 | sudo cpio --null --sparse -pvd /new/
On booting after the change, the new /home is correctly on a separate partition BUT during boot I get a message :
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority
I checked and the ownership and permissions for /home/user/.ICEauthority are correct. The suggested remedy of deleting the file & waiting for it to be recreated doesn't work either. But when I compare other hidden files in the new /home/user directory, quite a few now have their ownership changed to root. & I am unable to connect to my external monitor because of a permission problem (probably connected).
I was updating the kernel and left the computer to let it do its business. There was power failure and I don't know if the update completed or if it was in the middle of it. Now if I start the computer, it freezes up at the login screen. I tried to recover from grub, by selecting "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic (recovery mode)". There were no prompts for input after this. The recovery screen is not updating anything after:

So I ran the update manager to install the latest kernel. It goes fine and was sitting at the restart prompt. I was playing minecraft and the entire system locked up - couldn't restart X or anything. Hard restart and I get a multitude of errors mostly dealing with not being able to find things in /dev/... It gives me a command line but I'm lost as to where to go from here to repair my system
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.
View 7 Replies View Relatedthis is a minor but annoying problem and I hope maybe just a simple fix. I have a weather monitor in my top panel. Sometimes it gets stuck and can't update. How do I restart these little panel applets or whatever they are called? I don't want to restart or even relogon for such a trivial problem, but it is annoying. Not sure about the relogon, but I know a reboot fixes it. (running AMD64 bit lucid).
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter running a system update, on next boot I was unable to connect to the internet. I am running Fedora 12 KDE 4.4 x86_64 with a dsl connection. Network manager was keeping my ethernet card disabled. If I disabled NM control of the card I could manually enable it and connect to the internet, but on reboot it would be disabled again. I saw that the update did apply to NetworkManager so I did a downgrade. yum downgrade NetworkManager That seems to have fixed the problem.
Here's an interesting thing I noticed. When I did the downgrade, yum wanted to "Install" for dep NetworkManager-glib for the lower version, however didn't do anything to the same file on the latest version. Almost as if it wasn't installed. Now, with the downgraded version as current, yum wants to update both NetworkManager and NetworkManager-glib to the latest version. I couldn't swear to it, but I think the original update to NetworkManager did not include the *-glib dep, but now it does. Maybe that was the problem all along?
I was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.
Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?
The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD
Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.
Just tried updating 5.2 to 5.3; using both pup and yum, and both get the same error:
Error: Missing Dependency: libgpod.so.0 is needed by package rhythmbox
If I remove rhythmbox (I don't use it on this machine) the upgrade works, but I thought I'd post in case someone wanted to take a look at it.
I run Ubuntu and yesterday the update manager downloaded a new kernel I think. It asked me to restart. I unlike before where when I select Ubuntu at boot up time and it just goes into it I am getting this black screen called GNU GRUB. What do I do here? Has Linux got corrupted by the updates I downloaded?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter lots of searching last night I noticed that over the last couple of days there have been quite a few posts of people receiving the error: no such device lots of numbers grub rescue>. I have a dual boot vista/ubuntu setup with ubuntu on my d: drive and windows on my c: drive and it happened to me last night. So after my freaking out when I received the grub rescue> error after updating somethings in my ubuntu install and restarting. Once the computer rebooted bam! error. after much freaking it only fixed itself by reinstalling the windows bootloader via the vista rescue disk I was wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening again? will ubuntu attempt to "update" itself again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedHere is my problem: I am using ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed on a HP tx2 1274nr laptop. I can get my wireless to work on both the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom STA wireless driver. Though only one can be active at a time.
My problem lies in I can activate either driver until I reboot the laptop. then it becomes inactive.
Is there a fix for this problem. I would like to have my wireless active after restarting.
