Computer Dell 2600.
Floppy start up yields a stopped functioning computer with the following line:
"Probing SCSI... aic7xxx0"
At this point the computer is locked up and I have to turn it off. A restart causes the same action.
I am able to boot Fedora 14 to the GUI, log in on the keyboard, see the desktop, and then I get no response from the laptop's keyboard or trackpad.
I do not know how to obtain hardware specifics on my keyboard or touchpad, so perhaps that would be good info for me to start with...
BTW my ultimate goal is to run an Amahi server on the laptop. 2600 has a pentium III 1.13GHz processor and 512Mb RAM
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 On my Laptop and it is not working I think it has something to do with the graphics. When I reboot my computer with the CD or Dual Boot (from using Windows Installer) the screen looks very faded,flashy or just not showing up like the quality of its regular Windows Start Up. It also won't show very much just a real messed up screen with blotchy images and very flash almost like when you push down a Game Boy or a Laptop Screen.My Model is a Inspiron model 2600 it has a 1.13GHz with 512 Mb of RAM
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo basically what I am trying to do is install Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Poweredge 2600 server. Right now I dont care wither I get the server version or the desktop version, I just need to get it on their. this is what I have run into. When installing the regular Ubuntu 10.04 desktop for 32bit, the server just locks up on the very first ubuntu install screen and the keyboard lights just start blinking non stop. When I use the server version, the server get to the Detecting Network Hardware and locks up at 94% and the keyboard will also start blinking nonstop. I have looked all over for an answer to this problem and have yet to find one. This guy figured out how to make it work but he never mentioned what version he was using. [URL]..
On this server I have 6 HDs, 5 of them are RAID 0 with 1 Hot Spare. I have also tried using the ubuntu-10.04.1-alternate-i386.iso.torrent and still had the same problem. I have spent the last 3 days searching all over google and the forum to an answer but had no luck.
Transmission stopped functioning and i # kill 1484 . Looking at # top i see now one zombie task which must be transmission. 1484 user 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 22.18.33 transmission <defunct> What can i do apart from shutting X or rebooting?

Then you can update on line via USB wireless adapters. I use WG111v2 to connect to dell 4010 to update other wireless drivers.
I am running Fedora 15 but about 1 week ago my Hp laserjet 1220 all-in-one printer stopped functioning. The OS recognizes the HP printer, but I cannot print any print job whatsoever. I have looked through the faq section and found no resolution for my conflict or problem. I have used Fedora on this system since Fedora 8.

A friend lent me their Ubuntu book but I can't understand it and could not find anything about the sound suddenly going from the speaker on Monday night. I went to Sony Ericsson's site to check something on my account and loud music suddenly started blaring out so I pressed the Fn button and End which muted it. However, I forgot to take it off before closing down for the night and as of Tuesday morning I have no sound. Would me leaving mute on all night have screwed something up or has it just suddenly gone? I am so upset as I cannot afford to get another laptop as not working and this is my last resort since my original Compaq one died.
I appreciate any "Helpful" solutions. Not in techy but layman's terms please as I won't understand. Also if you do reply, I am in the UK and also don't get notifications so I am not being rude if I can't get back to you quickly. I will be going to bed now.
Dual Boot Gone Bad I have been trying to set up a dual boot laptop on an old Dell Inspiron 2600. I got the machine cheap, and it is in excellent condition. I have upgraded the Bios to A11 (it was A4 when I got it) and put in a 40 Gig HD. It is maxed-out in memory at 360 Mb. It has the awful (by today's standards) Intel i810 video mess. I created an NTFS (primary) partition on the first half of the drive and installed XP, updated through SP3. I then attempted to install Debian 6 (squeeze) on the second half. I was unable to get anywhere with an installation using a squeeze Live CD. The screen just goes blank about 60 seconds into the installation, and everything freezes up. In rescue mode, I can get some screen play, but the rendering is awful and half of what you do is actually off the screen and you can't see what it is you are doing.
I hooked up a separate monitor, and was able to watch the installation just fine until it reached a certain point in the boot-up, then everything again went blank and the machine again froze up. I tried Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Mint 10, and Ultimate Edition 10.10 with varying degrees of success, but none completing and working.
The Ubuntu 10.04 LTS actually installed, but I could not get sufficient graphics in either a terminal (entered at the end of the install process just before re-booting) or booting to text only mode to sudo a change to the xorg.conf file that was native to the system, rather than to the installation package itself (which goes away when you reboot).
I was able to install 'squeeze' using the 'expert graphical install' mode under 'advanced options' (it lets you select a screen resolution when it starts the install), and when I got to the end of the installation, before re-booting, I told the system to open a monitor as 'root', and wrote what I thought would have been an appropriate xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 subdirectory using nano (monitor and driver specs, as well as suggested xorg.conf entries obtained elsewhere on the web).

I'M SO CLOSE! Can somebody help me and tell me how to edit GRUB so it again recognizes the partition... or reinstall GRUB.... or let me know if the problem is with the XP MBR.... And if so, maybe hopefully lead me to how to fix THAT issue without screwing up the Debian install (I know this isn't an "UGH"- Windows forum). If worst come to worst, I can delete all the Linux partitions, use my Windows install disk to repair the MBR, and reinstall lenny.... Hopefully with GRUB not losing XP this time. I hate to do it because it has taken me a couple of days to get ANY form of Linux actually working right on this machine..... but at least I know how to do it now and what distro will actually work.
Also, anybody with a clue as to why squeeze won't boot after what appears to be a successful installation (with the above-listed xorg.conf file in place) and what I can do to fix that issue would also be appreciated. It will be nice to have a system installed that has current support next year.
Strange thing is that the headphone jacks still work just fine. Used to be that unplugging the headphones would cause the sound to come out of the laptop speakers, but now sound never does. I'm wondering if the software that controls the routing of sound between the speakers and the headphone jacks is messed up?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from Intrepid to karmic on my girlfriends Dell Vostro 1510 and the wireless stopped working. The drivers are installed and worked fine under intrepid. When I enter the hardware drivers utility it says that the driver is active but currently not being used.

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Studio laptop for a few months now with no audio problems. Last night I was listening to music just fine, then put my laptop to sleep and went to bed. Today, I go to play music, and nothing comes out of the speakers. Both headphone/speaker jacks work, but when I unplug the headphones, nothing happens.

I am not sure if getting rdesktop to work on the laptop caused the issue or not since that seems to be the last major thing I did. (missing my sipie.py). This is what I am working with:

I am running Slackware -current and am using kde as my desktop environment. I'm not sure if this is a feature that I turned on my accident or a bug but its really annoying. When I start any program on the computer and it goes into the Task manager bar. If I click the bar to maximize the program or window it goes to the kde log on window. I am running KDE version 4.5.4.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo, first of all, this is my sisters computer so I am not sure exactly what happened. I had installed ubuntu alongside WinXp a couple of weeks ago. Today she booted into xp for the first time and accidentally launched some system restore option. A dialog box appeared and told that if she continued, everything on her disk would be erased. apparently, there was no indication of how to not to continue, so she shut it down by holding the power button.
Now, it won't boot. Not even to grub, it just cycles where the screen comes on, a courser blinks in the top left, and then it automatically restarts after about 5 seconds and repeats (unless one launches BIOS configuration). I assume something about the MBR has gotten messed up. I tried booting off a USB thumb drive, but it just accessed the drive for a second or two, and then went back into the cycle (I tried every USB socket, and the BIOS was configured properly to boot off external USB, also, I was able to boot my computer from the USB)
how to proceed if I can't even boot off of USB. Oh, the computer is Asus Eee pc netbook (no CD drive).
Tried to install Kubuntu on a Dell Dimension 2350, 2gb ram, 250gb hd, single core intel 1.6mhz processor. It's opening screen comes up, tested drive, memory, and choose install, and there it sits, for hours, just Kubuntu logo, and the dots light across the bottom.
What I tried: Wiped the HD (same result) Changed CD/DVD Drive with new one (same result) Made new Kubuntu CD (same result) Checked and changed ribbon cables for new ones (same result) Checked all settings in the bios (same result) I tried putting in the XP install CD and it loaded. Wiped Drive again. Put same new CD/DVD drive in another Dell (this one a Dimension 5100 dual core), and same Kubuntu install CD and it installed with no problem.
I try install debian 6 on my dell gx 270, but on some step of instalation I have error. I try other computer, also dell gx 270 but same problem. I try change cd rom, hard disc, ram .... but problem is still here. Is some chipset or something from dell is problem? I try install firmware-6.0.1a-i386-netinst.iso and debian-6.0.1a-i386-kde-CD-1.iso

The computer starts up normally in Windows xp, but when I want to boot up in ubuntu, I choose ubuntu, then I get a series of upgrades or recovery modes, I always just choose the top one, then the ubuntu screen flashes up for about 1 second, then I get a black screen for a few seconds, then a message telling me the monitor is going to sleep!
What do I do to get back into ubuntu?
We've bought a cheap video camera for our son to make a movie. Files are stored on a 16Gb SD disk. When we first used it a week ago I was able to connect the camera via USB and copy the files to my laptop. Today I went to clear some more files to make room for shooting the movie and nothing shows up when the camera is attached to the laptop. I can view the files on the camera so they do exist.
I have tried:Using different usb ports Using a different computer Using an SD Card Reader on both computers Investigating permissions via terminal (the camera seems to be set to RWX Checking that no one has played with the settings on the camera Nothing has changed on the camera or the laptop as far as I can see and yet the files are not showing up.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite L25-S199, and it includes an Atheros wireless NIC based on the AR2413 chipset, I believe. Currently I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 on it, but I've previously had Xubuntu and Ubuntu, and this problem has always existed with WPA2.
Specifically, the LAN is a wireless WPA2 with AES encryption (no TKIP). The computer can connect to the network just fine, but the web is all but unusable; it is very finicky, mostly failing to fetch any pages, but sometimes succeeding (mostly with Google pages, and those from the local network's servers). Perhaps a DNS issue?
This problem doesn't occur with WEP or no encryption.

The laptop has a pcmcia wifi card, 4gb hard drive space, 128mb ram, and is a Pentium II 400mhz. Can you recommend a linux distro for me? I won't use any features other than freenx and wifi, so i'm sure this laptop is fast enough for that.
View 12 Replies View RelatedMy room mate is trying to use an old Dell he has as a print server. After much twisting his arm, I was able to convince him to go with Debian, which, I would install. I used a 5.0.4 Net Install CD I had, and included Desktop Environment (he needs a GUI), and Print Server. Basically, as usually happens when I install Debian, I am having trouble getting X to work. Heres what the errors look like after X fails:

Previously I have had no problems with sound. After the installation of gnome-network-admin package, my soundcard was no longer autodetected on startup. I have since removed the package but the problem remains. After boot-up in 'Sound Preferences' > 'Hardware' there is nothing shown. In > 'Output' it shows 'Dummy Output' . I installed apache 2.2 with centos 5.5. When I typed service httpd stop, apache stopped. Then in a minute, it automatic start again. I don't use crontab, and I tried 'chkconfig httpd off', but it still automatic start. I used 'ps -ef' to look process, I saw, httpd have PPID is 1, and then I find PID 1 have PPID 0.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am COMPLETELY new to Linux.I started a computer class recently and I started teaching myself PERL.My teacher had mentioned to me that it's far better for some reasons (he did not elaborate) to write code in a Unix system. So I got Ubuntu 10.10.I installed it along side my windows 7.After I setup my windows (had to reformat the disk) I decided to boot up into Ubuntu to set that up. I installed the necessary drivers that it required, and the updates. I was asked to restart the system so I did so.
It did not even shut down or restart my system.I waited patiently 15 minutes...30 minutes 1 hour... until I finally decided to hit the reset button on my PC. Then when I'd boot back in to Ubuntu afterwards, it would stay at the log in screen and my mouse wouldn't budge and nor is my keyboard recognized by Ubuntu.Im really frustrated and I've been searching for answers for the whooole day and I just can't seem to find something well explained. Im completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know where to enter any code in a cmd line or such.
1)Reformatted my harddrive to install windows 7 on it
2)Set up windows 7 and then booted into Ubuntu.
3) Set up Ubuntu and installed necessary drivers and updates
4) Reset the computer and waited for an hour for the reset to happen but nothing happened.
5) Manually reset my pc and booted into ubuntu
6) Stuck at log in screen with mouse and keyboard not functioning (unable to use ubuntu).
