I have looked on google at great lengths to try to find a solution. It seems that my kernel configuration is missing something? My system/kernel is: 2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #3 SMP Thu Jan 13 10:49:06 EST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3220 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux.I am posting this on SuperUser since this system is used as a workstation and this problem is unrelated to specific tasks that are handled exclusively by servers.iproute2 is installed:
I installed pyxattr to play around with, and when I try to set them it says that the operation is not supported. Does Arch Linux not support xattr, or how do I enable them?
So hibernate used to work fine on my computer, but then after some updates one day - the option just disappeared from all log-out consoles from all desktop managers (xfce4, gnome .etc).xfce4-power-manager now says "Hibernate operation not supported" when I attempt to select it.
I'm dualbooting XP and Kubuntu on my laptop, and want to move some files from my ext3 part to the NTFS part. Mounting it goes fine, but can't write, create folders, etc. to the NTFS part. Started looking for people with similar problems online and found the guide on this site, so I installed ntfs-config and went through the steps, checking "Enable write to internal device", etc. Still no good. I tried manually putting in the write option on the mount command, no flags comes up but konsole still says "Operation not supported." Dual-booting Vista and Kubuntu Jaunty
Nautilus won't start, for example, I click home folder, the bar below display "opening username" for 5 sec and nothing opened. I used another account seems no problem. The problem happened since my last update (and I forgot to close firefox and seems some crash happened). When I try to open the trash can in nautilus I get this message: "Sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": Operation not supported". Also when I click on the computer icon on dock nothing happens. When I plug my ipod in, it mounts but it doesn't appear in rhythmbox.
I have a problem with acl's in Ubuntu Server 10.04. When i write in a terminal the command setfacl, the machine returns error: setfactl /home/xxxx: operation not supported.
I have a system that has an intermittent issue with copying files. Below is the error that occurs. Error while copying "<filename>" There was an error coping the file into network:/// Operation not support by backend
The user has Ubuntu 8.04. They are using the Nautilus window to copy files (drag and drop) from a CD/DVD or USB device. The directory they are copying onto is a RAID0 device with approximately 2T of space, and more than enough space to take the files. The permissions for the drive and folders are set to the user.
This occurs randomly and is very frustrating. We cannot duplicate it and when it does occur, it will happen once, then work fine. I've been checking forums and help files all over, but find nothing similar. The only stuff I find is if it's a new install and the permissions haven't been set correctly. Even a confirmation that someone else has seen this before.
I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.
Gnumeric 1.10.1. I tried editing a .xls spreadsheet with gnumeric and I came across the message "operation not supported".
I tried running Gnumeric from terminal to see if there was any more info regarding the save, but it just outputted that one message "Operation not supported" and that was it.
The .xls file is on another partition so I figured maybe Ubuntu mounted the partition in read-only, but no - I can edit other documents on the partition.
I right clicked on the .xls file to see the permissions and it says Owner Group and Others are all read+write.
I uninstalled and reinstalled gnumeric, but no change.
I used sg_sata_ident to get the IDENTIFY_DEVICE output on my SATA drive. The output shows the drive as being able to support READ_BUFFER/WRITE_BUFFER. However, when I issue sg_read_buffer /dev/sda, I get an error - DRIVER_SENSE - Invalid command operation supported.
As I understand the rc.wireless script the command 'iwconfig wlan0 nickname ....' is always executed. On my computer this causes annoying message "Set nickname: operation not supported". I read the man for iwconfig. It seems for me that there are no particular reason to force the 'set nickname' operation.
Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)
1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.
2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)
3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.
4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...
I also am having problems with 11.04 and the Unity desktop. In particular when I ask Evolution to Back Up its settings, I get the error message "The folder contents could not be displayed" "Operation not supported". I've used this operation many times on earlier versions of Ubuntu. I've tried removing and re-loading Evolution, but no difference.
I have a linux machine with 3 NICs, one for the local net and the other 2 for 2 different ISP's which i want to load balance.
I configured Load Balance on my linux box using iproute2 and what i found in this site [URL].
Im able to reach the internet using that box, but when i configure a pc from the local net with the linux machine as the gateway im not able to reach the internet.
The problem seems to be NAT concerned, so i was wondering, how can i configure PAT using iproute2 to get this result: -I want load balance to take place, and that translation occurs after the linux router decides through which interface (of the 2 i have configured to my ISP's) the packet is going out. (i dont know if that is possible)
eth0 is the default route, and eth3 is being used for something else. So what I want to do is load balance browsing between eth1 and eth2. I've added all of the routes in the LARTC guide, but the command to enable the load balancing:

To be able to use my 3g connection from my laptop I am using Azilink.Azilink work by setting up a little Openvpn server on your smartphone then you connect to your smartphone from your laptop with OpenVPN.From there what i wanted was to use a second VPN connection to an external Linux host and redirecting all my traffic to that tunnel... (redirect-gateway + iptables)It is working but partially..Here is the way I connect through my phone (all steps are I think important for the routing issue...)
1) I plug the phone then a usb0 interface is created with the 192.168.239.5 ip adress (my phone is 192.168.239.4)Then adb connect 192.168.239.4
2) I have to enable a port forward on my phone adb forward tcp:41927 tcp:41927
3) I run the openvpn script (to connect to my phone on wich i have launched Azilink)
So Openvpn connect to 127.0.0.1:41927 (to my phone) From there I have a Initialization Sequence Completed At this time I am connected through 3G via my smartphone to the Internet..And as you imagine i don't want to enter all the IP adresses of Internet minus RFC1918 manually via route command.I think the problem comes from the fact that when i do the route add default gw 10.8.0.5 it is overwritting all the routes required to establish the first and the second connection am i right? Could someone help me solve that issue ?
I've got a Toshiba Satellite L25-S199, and it includes an Atheros wireless NIC based on the AR2413 chipset, I believe. Currently I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 on it, but I've previously had Xubuntu and Ubuntu, and this problem has always existed with WPA2.
Specifically, the LAN is a wireless WPA2 with AES encryption (no TKIP). The computer can connect to the network just fine, but the web is all but unusable; it is very finicky, mostly failing to fetch any pages, but sometimes succeeding (mostly with Google pages, and those from the local network's servers). Perhaps a DNS issue?
This problem doesn't occur with WEP or no encryption.

I am COMPLETELY new to Linux.I started a computer class recently and I started teaching myself PERL.My teacher had mentioned to me that it's far better for some reasons (he did not elaborate) to write code in a Unix system. So I got Ubuntu 10.10.I installed it along side my windows 7.After I setup my windows (had to reformat the disk) I decided to boot up into Ubuntu to set that up. I installed the necessary drivers that it required, and the updates. I was asked to restart the system so I did so.
It did not even shut down or restart my system.I waited patiently 15 minutes...30 minutes 1 hour... until I finally decided to hit the reset button on my PC. Then when I'd boot back in to Ubuntu afterwards, it would stay at the log in screen and my mouse wouldn't budge and nor is my keyboard recognized by Ubuntu.Im really frustrated and I've been searching for answers for the whooole day and I just can't seem to find something well explained. Im completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know where to enter any code in a cmd line or such.
1)Reformatted my harddrive to install windows 7 on it 2)Set up windows 7 and then booted into Ubuntu. 3) Set up Ubuntu and installed necessary drivers and updates 4) Reset the computer and waited for an hour for the reset to happen but nothing happened. 5) Manually reset my pc and booted into ubuntu 6) Stuck at log in screen with mouse and keyboard not functioning (unable to use ubuntu).
On my centos 5.6 , the KMouth is functioning for 'text to speech' facility. Can you please let me know if we have 'speech to text' facility for centos?
Program Knoppix 3.1 cdr Computer Dell 2600. Floppy start up yields a stopped functioning computer with the following line: "Probing SCSI... aic7xxx0" At this point the computer is locked up and I have to turn it off. A restart causes the same action.
I'm somewhat familiar with Linux and became pretty decent at installing and configuring packages in Ubuntu. One of the things I was able to do with my tinkering was set up a functioning imap and pop3 mail server using dovecot-postfix. Now I'm experimenting with Slackware to get the feel of another distro, and I noticed that the mail server packages were already installed. On my client computer they can pick up that I have users configured and my mx record is working.
However it is failing to send mail saying that it is failing to relay the e-mail message and that the server responded 5.7.1 which was a problem that I was having in Ubuntu when first configuring the mail server. The fix was to edit the postfix.conf file and adding the localhost name of my server. Does anybody know of the file that I need to edit to make it possible to relay my messages with both pop3 and imap.
After I set to use some modules, say, pam_access.so, I want to know if there is a way for the administrator to check if any invalid attempt was happened and blocked by that module?
I was messing around with my drive trying some different arrangements of partition to get another one inside. overall the result doesn't differ much from the original but while messing with it I done a lot of steps. I thought GParted will do the minimal number of operations but it didn't. it just traced all my operations one by one. this gave it a few days worth of work. As I don't want to loose data I can't hit cancel but I don't want to wait few days for it. Is there any way to tell it to stop after completing the current operation? It's from natty ubuntu live cd.
I run SUSE on my machine for a year, but I'm really a newbie on Linux. In the system monitor it states:SUSE LINUX Release 11.2 Kernel Linux 2.6.31.5 -0.1 -desktop GNOME 2.28.0Last week when I rebooted my machine, I suddenly found my machine had no response to any click or typing. When the cursor move to any icons, they can be highlighted, but when I click them, no response at all. The weird thing is almost every time after I reboot the computer, it can work for a few minutes, then stop working. But if I press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, it can be log out.
I think there must be something wrong with my GNOME, 'cause everything seems working fine when I login IceWM. recover the .config file in my home directory. But I don't have this file in my home directory.
I'm using fedora 11. I want to do some operation like after saving a file (moving ,copying,..) the system need to ask that "DO you want to encrypt?" . If yes I am able to run the crypt module (which I already implemented..). Is it possible to invoke a encrypt module which I implemented in c language.
