I am able to boot Fedora 14 to the GUI, log in on the keyboard, see the desktop, and then I get no response from the laptop's keyboard or trackpad.
I do not know how to obtain hardware specifics on my keyboard or touchpad, so perhaps that would be good info for me to start with...
BTW my ultimate goal is to run an Amahi server on the laptop. 2600 has a pentium III 1.13GHz processor and 512Mb RAM
I have a Slitaz 3.0 install on a UBB stick (via tazusb). It uses the cooking version. After a boot, all seems to be working except for the keyboard. Not a good start. Nothing wrong with the keyboard (typing this in Ubuntu and no probs in XP) so must be something wrong in Slitaz.
View 2 Replies View RelatedDual Boot Gone Bad I have been trying to set up a dual boot laptop on an old Dell Inspiron 2600. I got the machine cheap, and it is in excellent condition. I have upgraded the Bios to A11 (it was A4 when I got it) and put in a 40 Gig HD. It is maxed-out in memory at 360 Mb. It has the awful (by today's standards) Intel i810 video mess. I created an NTFS (primary) partition on the first half of the drive and installed XP, updated through SP3. I then attempted to install Debian 6 (squeeze) on the second half. I was unable to get anywhere with an installation using a squeeze Live CD. The screen just goes blank about 60 seconds into the installation, and everything freezes up. In rescue mode, I can get some screen play, but the rendering is awful and half of what you do is actually off the screen and you can't see what it is you are doing.
I hooked up a separate monitor, and was able to watch the installation just fine until it reached a certain point in the boot-up, then everything again went blank and the machine again froze up. I tried Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Mint 10, and Ultimate Edition 10.10 with varying degrees of success, but none completing and working.
The Ubuntu 10.04 LTS actually installed, but I could not get sufficient graphics in either a terminal (entered at the end of the install process just before re-booting) or booting to text only mode to sudo a change to the xorg.conf file that was native to the system, rather than to the installation package itself (which goes away when you reboot).
I was able to install 'squeeze' using the 'expert graphical install' mode under 'advanced options' (it lets you select a screen resolution when it starts the install), and when I got to the end of the installation, before re-booting, I told the system to open a monitor as 'root', and wrote what I thought would have been an appropriate xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 subdirectory using nano (monitor and driver specs, as well as suggested xorg.conf entries obtained elsewhere on the web).

I'M SO CLOSE! Can somebody help me and tell me how to edit GRUB so it again recognizes the partition... or reinstall GRUB.... or let me know if the problem is with the XP MBR.... And if so, maybe hopefully lead me to how to fix THAT issue without screwing up the Debian install (I know this isn't an "UGH"- Windows forum). If worst come to worst, I can delete all the Linux partitions, use my Windows install disk to repair the MBR, and reinstall lenny.... Hopefully with GRUB not losing XP this time. I hate to do it because it has taken me a couple of days to get ANY form of Linux actually working right on this machine..... but at least I know how to do it now and what distro will actually work.
Also, anybody with a clue as to why squeeze won't boot after what appears to be a successful installation (with the above-listed xorg.conf file in place) and what I can do to fix that issue would also be appreciated. It will be nice to have a system installed that has current support next year.
I'm trying to get the special keys on my bluetooth keyboard (Dell Y-RAQ-DEL2, which came with my Dell Inspiron 530) to work under Ubuntu (10.04). Specifically things like the calculator button, volume knob etc.
I've tried various keyboard mapping in the Preferences > Keyboard menu, but the system doesn't seem to be able to "see" any of these special keys.
I'm installing slack 13.0 in a Dell 2350 for a friend. once installed, it works ok for a while then within some somewhat random period of time, just plain locks up. the keyboard stops working, the mouse cursor still moves, but there is no response from mouse clicks. i was ssh'ed into the machine one of these times to see if i could read the logs during a lockup. the machine stopped responding to the ssh session as well (actually i had an instance of mc running at the time, and the machine still responded to it. when i exited mc, i was stuck in console never-never land). the logs show absolutely nothing. /etc/messages keeps showing MARK long after the lockup. all other logs are not updated since boot. this machine has an i810 chipset, is there a driver issue here?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 On my Laptop and it is not working I think it has something to do with the graphics. When I reboot my computer with the CD or Dual Boot (from using Windows Installer) the screen looks very faded,flashy or just not showing up like the quality of its regular Windows Start Up. I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.

It will echo a few, then stop for a moment, then it echos all the keyboard entries from the time it stopped responding all at once. Anyone have any ideas on why this started happening? This happens from any computer I use to connect. It happens with Putty and SSH Secure Shell.

I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. View 1 Replies View RelatedSo basically what I am trying to do is install Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Poweredge 2600 server. Right now I dont care wither I get the server version or the desktop version, I just need to get it on their. this is what I have run into. When installing the regular Ubuntu 10.04 desktop for 32bit, the server just locks up on the very first ubuntu install screen and the keyboard lights just start blinking non stop. When I use the server version, the server get to the Detecting Network Hardware and locks up at 94% and the keyboard will also start blinking nonstop. I have looked all over for an answer to this problem and have yet to find one. This guy figured out how to make it work but he never mentioned what version he was using. [URL]..
On this server I have 6 HDs, 5 of them are RAID 0 with 1 Hot Spare. I have also tried using the ubuntu-10.04.1-alternate-i386.iso.torrent and still had the same problem. I have spent the last 3 days searching all over google and the forum to an answer but had no luck.
I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Arch Linux with an Intel 965 GM video chipset (from dmesg). I'm using the xf86-video-intel driver, and Xorg (using xfce4) works flawlessly, including compositing. Before getting into details about the HDMI, I'd like to ask why I don't gave an xorg.conf.d/10-moniter.conf, it's not there, just evdev, quirks, and synaptics (because I figured that moniter.conf could be modified to include HDMI). So, basically when I'm on my XFCE4 desktop, I plug in the HDMI cable and to the TV, and on windows, it would would work, but on Arch the TV just says: "No input", and my desktop just stays the same, so absolutely nothing happens. If I have it connected upon bootup, the HDMI displays (the BIOS and grub menu on the TV) until I select to boot Arch linux on Grub, then the tv screen goes blank. I've tried Googling this but I got no decent results, just a bunch of random posts of audio not working with Nvidia.
PS - I did dmesg and lspci (with grep HDMI) and no results, so maybe it doesn't even recognize it, but then what do I do? There's obviously Linux support for HDMI...
How can I install Linux Red Hat 9.2 on my new dell Inspiron 1545. When I want to installed it, it will get to a stage and will ask me of drivers. But on my desktop I don't have such problem.

Some introduction: I am using Dell Inspiron (i3 processor) laptop, which I recently bought. I have win 7 preinstalled in it. In win 7, the wired broadban connection (Airtel connection) is working fine and have no issues.
I have been using mobile GPRS(BSNL, Ltd) through bluetooth, and that have been working fine. But today when I tried to connect through landline connection, it didn't workout. But the bluetooth connection is still fine. When I tried to do the connection manually through Network Manager, it is not taking the MAC Address. Till now, after installation, I have not updated my OS.
