General :: Command To Get Past An I/O Error In A File?

I have a log file that has an I/O Error about halfway in. It is a syslog file with Sendmail log entries. I need to break into smaller files. I tried using a simple egrep command creating new files by the date _egrep "^Sep 19" filename_ but the command hangs when it hits the I/O Error.
I tried split but it bails out when it hits the I/O Error. Is there anyway to read the file and get past the I/O Error? IS there a way to read the file from the bottom up so I can get the data from the top and bottom?

upon restart rssowl refused to start kept giving me an error that it could not starts cos it was trying to read past end of file lucky for me i back up my rss feed list every now and then i went to $ home/.rssowl2
and delete this directory fully now when restart rssowl it start up like a new install and ask for my *.opml file it loaded up and all good again

When follow the below step for patching the file diff file1 file2 > patchfile.patch patch -p0 file1 < patchfile.patch but I got the following error after that Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Assume -R? [n] I dont know what happen here Kernel version is:

I faced a issue with updating a file contents with echo command which fails with error as below:
echo "foo" > bar //to create a file named "bar"
echo "foobar" > bar //to edit its contents
The latter fails, it prompts "File exists" i.e.

find /var/spool/mqueue -group abc -exec rm -rf {} ;Using above command , I delete all the files belong to group abc.Now the problem i face is that the this command gives error that some files are missing . And this error occur because after creating list of files, it pass that list to rm -rf but till that time sendmail process queue and some of files disapper from /var/spool/mqueue.

I am trying to run a script called install.sh as follows: I get a jar file, and extract it using the command: unzip filename.jar -D path/to/files then I navigate to that directory where I extracted the files, and run the command: sh install.sh (where install.sh is one of the files that has been extracted in that directory using the above unzip command.) running this command gives me an error:'nstall.sh: command not found.' among other errors in the script ( from that portion of the script that should not even be executed, which is really weird). However, instead of unzipping the jar file, if I just copied the same install.sh file to that folder, and ran the 'sh install.sh' command, the script runs fine.

We make everyday a DB Mysql backup on Linux redhat Enterprise. We are using a bash shell script (and putting it in the crontab) to execute it automatically everyday. We added a line to this script telling, once the backup has completed, to find old backup files (stored on hard disk after each backup) older than x days to remove them. We use the find command (search for file type) with the mtime option and in combination with rm command. Everything runs ok but we also want to add some new code to the same line: If find command cannot find anything or fails, for example if it cannot delete file or fails, send the error message (standard error output) to an error file (like error000001 and increasing) and mail the errorxxxx file to an email address for example to admin@companyname.com. What would be the code for this issue to add it to our find command in the same bash shell script??

I have a script: `cd $FILEPATH && patch -i $TMPFILEA2$FILETMPPATH` Variable $FILESPATH is = /tmp/ardiff.AvUUGfOKa2/a/hello/ and Variable $TMPFILEA2$FILETMPPATH is = /tmp/ardiff.AvUUGfOKa2/b/hello/hello.c.patch. I don't know, why is it no working from script file, it write me message to terminal: ./ardiff.sh: line 242: patching: command not found.
But I have no PATCHING command there!!!! The paradox is, when I want to patch it from terminal (I write it to terminal by keyboard, it works).

I am an extremely inexperienced user of command line computing (I am working with Terminal.app on Mac OS X Snow Leopard) who is trying to compile Fortran code with the G95 compiler. I have created a folder within the G95 directory that I would like to use for storing all of my code files, but when I try to cd from the G95 directory to the new one that I created, I get the above error. I can cd to other folders within the G95 directory, and have tried all combination's of capitalization.

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,

Basically my problem can be neatly summed up as the problem described at both here and here. I can only presume it's a rather uncommon problem to do with a particular hardware setup since I can't find any widespread bug reports of it, but it is (on my system at least) highly replicable. I can reboot my system from Natty and it either one of two scenarios. It can reboot the system (as first asked) then reboot again in the middle of POST and splurge an error about interrupting POST at me (and keep giving me this error every reboot till I go into the bios and resave some settings).
Alternatively, it can get all the way into grub, where I can dual boot into Windows, windows will get some arbritary point in (usually the login screen give or take 10 seconds) and then reboot at random. It's not even a windows crash since I've disabled auto-reboot.I'm not sure what's causing it but I can only presume it's something at the kernel level, since I'm not sure anything else would have the kind of power needed to interfere with the system at an 'outside the OS' level. As such I wouldn't have any idea how to go about fixing it, but I can hope that someone here may be able to point me in the direction of potential settings I can change (probably BIOS I guess) that might aleviate the issue till a fix is found.

when i use rsync command to backup my image file , it shows the following error message.

I am trying to create a script that I can save on the desktop of my Primary computer and have it log in (get past the log in screen on the remote computers, and the banner) to multiple computers with the same user name and password in a LAN that is not connected to the internet.I am also trying to create a script that starts a script on the desktop of these remote machines ON the remote machines, but I think I am on the verge of figuring that one out with the "expect" command in a script.

that didn't go so well. This is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 H3 model. Non-touchscreen, Pentium 1.4 M, 1.5 GB RAM, 40 GB HD, CD-ROM drive.
The machine boots off of the Ubuntu NBE 10.04 CD-ROM, goes to the splash-screen (the Ubuntu Logo and 4 orange/grey dots) and after a few seconds the splash screen clears, the screen goes blank, and the CD-ROM drive stops reading. That's it. I ran the Check CD-ROM utility from the boot menu of the cd-rom and it checked good. I ran the check RAM (MemTest) utility and that was good as well. I put the CD-ROM in my Dell Inspiron and it ran just fine letting me into the LiveCD environment.
I've tried Alt-Ctl-F1 to see if there's a command prompt, but that doesn't work. I can't find any special key combination that does anything for me.
I also burned a copy of Puppy Linux 5.0, and that meets with pretty much the same results. It gets to "Setting up the layered filesystem... Done" and then "Performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem...Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And that's the end of the show... she will go no further.
The thing has Win XP installed on it and functional, so the machine works...

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Installed FC-8 (DVD) on old dell 866mhez desktop years ago; works like a champ. Inherited dimension 2400, used same DVD. No errors loading (std config). Reboot and linux starts. Gets to 'Set clock - ok' and hangs on 'starting UDev'
