I would like to format a pen drive to NTFS, so that a windows machine can use it, but Im unsure of the filesystem option's in Cfdisk. These are the options:
07 HPFS/NTFS
86 NTFS volume set
87 NTFS volume set
I think 07 is probably the right option, but as always when I dont know something, I like to get some advice from LQ members.
My largest partition is currently NTFS, which I thought I could use as my Linux home directory. But when mounted to /home, "useradd -m" refuses to add new user directories. So I want to keep 10GB of that partition for Win/Linux documents and such, and use the other 42 GB for Linux users.
My question is rather easy for most of you: using cfdisk, can I just delete that partition, add two new partitions, then write the table to disk? Right now there's no data on that partition but writing the partition table seems risky--I don't want to mess with any of the other partitions (even though I can just reinstall Linux).
I have a spare harddrive that I want to store my videos on. They are in mp4 format. I'm using cfdisk to create a new clean partition on the drive. What filesystem type should i make it (linux,HPFS/NTFS,FAT16...)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a 1 TB external hard disk to be used for backups. The backups will be performed with rsync and since I don't really care about accessing the data from other operating systems, I think I'll use ext3 on the partition. I'll just be backing up my home directory and probably /etc as well. In my home directory, I have a small number of files that are several GB, but most are tens of MB in size or less.
I'm just wondering if there are any special options I should pass when I create the filesystem with mkfs.ext3.
I have two Linux hosts (both running Ubuntu 10.04) and I want one of them to have access to part of the filesystem of the other. I.e. I want remote1 to be able to access the files of remote2:/home/username
This is simply to allow me to access my home directory on the other machine, read-write, and there's no need for other users to be able to access this too. The used IDs for 'username' are different on each host, for reasons I won't go into (Likewise, ADS, etc).
I tried Samba but I found it unreliable. For example, I have a program that monitors a directory and updates a list of around 12,000 files. I found that this list was constantly changing with files dropping out and some files being randomly unreadable. It was too unreliable.
I had something working quite well on remote1 with:
sshfs remote2:/home/username ~/remote2 -o idmap=user -o uid=$(id -u) -o gid=$(id -g)
This works perfectly for a while. Unfortunately remote1 is a laptop and is regularly disconnected from the LAN. This seems to completely break things when this sshfs filesystem is mounted, and typically requires a reboot to recover. I started to look into NFS but I ran into problems with this a few years ago with regards to user id mappings. At the time, I found there was a user-space NFS server that dealt with this but it had a bunch of its own problems. But that was NFSv3. Can NFSv4 'kernel server' handle different user ids and map between them properly? I really don't want to use NIS, and I can't actually change the user IDs anyway - they are set by external means.
Also, how does NFS handle an 'unreliable' network connection? Will it automatically reconnect or will the share be broken until it is remounted? What about something like CIFS? Can this cope with the network being regularly and unpredictably broken? This might have the same problems that Samba did, but it's worth a try if it will be suitable.

when checking the /proc/filesystems, i noticed that 'ntfs' is not listed there, several forum suggested i try running 'modprobe ntfs'. If that is not found, you'll need a kernel with ntfs support. i'm so lost, where to i get the modprobe ntfs

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
Have a 1TB external USB hard drive I want to use on both Windows and Linux (Mythbuntu 9.10), so I thought the easiest way would be to format it with NTFS. Installed the NTFS-3G package and I'm able to read and write to the drive fine from Linux, however I have a few questions;
1) How do I configure Linux so that when it mounts the NTFS partition it is writeable for user, group and other (bascially I want everyone to have read and write access)? Currently when the NTFS disk is mounted the permissions are restricted to the user only and I suspect I'll need to edit fstab for this, but don't have much experience here so need help with the specifics.
2) If my Linux PC is turned on with the external drive attached, the disk is not mounted until I double click on the icon on the desktop. Is there anyway I can configure Linux so that it will automatically mount the external disk when booting?

i tried making a Linux window shared swap partition using cfdisk and printed the result to the partition table and then immediately restarted my machine but the boot loader showed me there was an error it could not mount the boot partition, i use mepis what could be the problem?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 13 just a few days ago, and it was all working well, until i tried to boot into my windows system. The windows boot loader said that it couldn't load a system file, and suggested i repair the windows system. it did not work, and i dont want to completely reinstall windows because i have some very important VB6 source code, that i do not want to lose. (For all you VB haters, i only use it bcus its really easy to learn. Don't bring the subject up, because i dont want this thread deleted because some jerk decides to start a flame war about it.) I worked really hard on the project, and i dont want to delete it. Fedora still works fine, but come up with this error message when i attempt to mount the NTFS filesystem:

I do really like Ubuntu. Still working on getting my way around and finding things but overall I think its great!But I have a problem. I used my friends removable drive to watch a movie on my laptop, and when he put it back in his it doesn't work.He uses Windows 7. He has alot of stuff on his drive that we would rather not reformat, so Im here asking you fantastic people for help.So he had it formatted to NTFS and now its RAW..I have no idea how. It won't work on either my desktop (XP) or his laptop (7) but it works fine on my UBUNTU
View 5 Replies View Relatedso I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 a couple of days ago and used my whole hard drive.Thing is, I decided that although I loved Ubuntu, I stll want to have dual-boot for some cases.. But now that the disks filesystem is not NTFS, Windows cannot regognise the disk as installable and cannot convert the filesystem. Gosh, Windows is a piece of junk, but I still need them for some occasions.

I am new to Linux platform and have installed RHEL 6 on my computer. I have gone through different posts on websites regarding how to mount windows drive on to the Linux file system.Here are few results of my trial where results are slightly overwhelming for a guy like me:
1. Mounting NTFS file system using mount commandAs a su-)
" $mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/MyFilesystem"
Output: error: unrecognised file system ntfs
2. I followed step by step instructions of installing Fuse and ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs but had no luck:
while using this command for the installation of for FUSE-0.9(which I guess prepares files for installation) I am getting this error :
" Command use: ./configure --exec-prefix=/; make;make install"
Error: "Checking Kernel source directory.../usr.src/kernels/2.6.32-71.e16.x86_64...Checking Kernel source version.......Not found "
Configure error: cannot determine the version of the Linux kernel source.Please configure the kernel before running this script.
Woooh , as u can see my Linux version is mentioned in that message so can anyone lemme know whether this issue is because of the incompatibility of Fuse with my version of Linux or am I suppose to make some changes in the command itself.
Dell Mini 9 Netbook with Windows XP OS died. It has a 16GB SSD. I was in the middle of installing HP printer software when it shutdown unexpectedly. Then upon turning it back on it says something about a media test failure, check cable and then Operating System Not Found. I've been able to boot using Damn Small Linux using an external cd drive.
When I type 'fdisk -l' I get:
Disk /dev/hda: 15.4 GB, 15408046080 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1873 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk /dev/hda doesn't contain a valid partition table
My wife has lots of pictures on the drive that she would like so I took it to a couple data recovery places and they were charging anywhere from $1000 just for jpegs up to $2600 for all files retrieved. That's more than I can budget for this. So my wife accepted the fact that the pictures are gone, but I figured I might as well try what I can because we have nothing more to lose.
I thought I'd try to get a hard drive cubby and attach it through USB to a working PC, but apparently Dell's SSDs are proprietary and the design is not accommodated. I thought maybe just the partition table information got erased somehow, so I tried using gparted and it found nothing. Whenever I use cfdisk and create partitions, I quit cfdisk after writing and it still says there is no valid partition table. I have no other ideas as to what I can do.
I use a mounted NTFS filesystem as my main data storage drive. I then symlink all my Windows folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) into my Ubuntu home folder. Works great, because it means I can share files between Windows and Ubuntu hassle-free. However, any file created on or saved to the NTFS partition automatically has its owner set as "root". Is it possible to set the default owner to me (aaron)? Or does it have to be root on NTFS?

I can't active vg because haven't name, but is not lvm, is only ntfs partition Maybe ubuntu puts in lvm and grub? Any idea? If I change with fdisk to ntfs i lose all the information in the partition?

I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

I am wondering if anyone knows how to enable NTFS compression using Paragon NTFS 8.1 Enterprise?
The Professional version comes with a utility mkntfs which allows you to set compression as default for all files, but the Enterprise version is apparently meant to be 'fully featured' and support compression, so how do I enable compression on a drive/folder/file?

Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. Since Mac OS X, runs a BSD Linux at the core I think that this is the correct place to ask about this, but I need cfdisk to make some ext2 and swap partitions on some Compact Flash and old HDs without needing to download any LiveCD. There is any cfdisk that I can use on my Mac?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
