Ubuntu :: Auto Mount Options For External NTFS?

Jan 31, 2010

Have a 1TB external USB hard drive I want to use on both Windows and Linux (Mythbuntu 9.10), so I thought the easiest way would be to format it with NTFS. Installed the NTFS-3G package and I'm able to read and write to the drive fine from Linux, however I have a few questions;

1) How do I configure Linux so that when it mounts the NTFS partition it is writeable for user, group and other (bascially I want everyone to have read and write access)? Currently when the NTFS disk is mounted the permissions are restricted to the user only and I suspect I'll need to edit fstab for this, but don't have much experience here so need help with the specifics.

2) If my Linux PC is turned on with the external drive attached, the disk is not mounted until I double click on the icon on the desktop. Is there anyway I can configure Linux so that it will automatically mount the external disk when booting?

Below is what is in my fstab file at present;

Quote:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# -- This file has been automaticly generated by ntfs-config --
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

Debian Configuration :: Can't Auto-Mount External NTFS Volume

I have successfully mounted my Win7 volume and my external hard drives NTFS volume as well. However, after modifying the fstab I seem to only be getting the win7 volume to auto-mount. Below is the contents of my fstab. /dev/sdf3 is not mounting. Again, it works no problem if I manually mount it.

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

Ubuntu :: Auto Mount Ntfs Drives?

How can I correctly mount all partitions I want on startup?

Ubuntu :: Configure Auto Mount For NTFS Drives?

May 16, 2011

I have a dual boot setup with a fair amount of files in my windows volume. I noticed that the Ubuntu 10.4 GNOME version (at least) does not auto mount my NTFS drive. Of course as I have seen from various post this gets annoying when opening up a program that loads previous files before I for ex, click the '110GB FileSystem' icon from Nautilus or similar...that seems to mount it for me then... I want my 110GB NTFS volume to mount automatically so I dont have to do this process everytime I reboot.

I found a post on the forum (the latest one I could find) below that recommends installing ntfs-config. The post is from May 2008 but mentions 10.10 (via edits) so I'm confused and wondering if there is an easier/default way..or this is still the way to go? After several screw ups editing system files manually, Im very cautious about doing it in this case because its a work computer and frankly the uninsttall or editing the fstab manually worries me.

How can I automate this mounting process so once I login as a standard user the NTFS partition mounts without any input? I would like this to auto mount without prompting for a password or having to double click on the vista partition each time.

Ubuntu :: Auto-mount External Drive To Folder

Sep 26, 2010

The solution may to my problem may exist elsewhere, but I had trouble searching/finding it.I just bought a new external drive. The drive is formatted as ext4. I use it mainly in esata mode. Whenever I connect it, it mounts to /media/[UUID], where "[UUID]" is the UUID of the drive. I want it to be located at /media/backup when it is inserted, not in relation the UUID. I have tried putting a new line in my fstab (mount by UUID to folder) to mount the drive. It mounts correctly if the drive is connected to the computer and turned on during startup, but if the drive is off/not connected during startup Ubuntu barks at me. (I press 's' to skip mounting the drive) Is there a way to make external/removable drives mount to a certain location other than /media/[UUID] when they are inserted? I want the drive to mount to the folder while the computer is running, not only during startup.

Debian Hardware :: Auto-mount External 2.0 TB (usb 3.0)

Jan 29, 2015

I bought a new external HDD - a Seagate 2 TB (actually 1.8 TB) but am unable to mount it. The drive is USB 3.0 while the ports on my system are USB 2.0 but that is NOT the issue. I am able to see the HDD without an issue on the CLI. I am on Jessie 64-bit.

Code: Select all$ lsusb
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0bc2:ab24 Seagate RSS LLC
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

My question is why it does not automount. Also if I should try to manually mount it, how should I go about it ?

I got the disks pre-formatted in around 500 GB (or as close to it) multiples as can be seen.

The other question is why does /dev/sdb4 show some different dialog than the rest ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount External Ntfs Hd As User AND Being Able To Share?

I have an ntfs external hd; I can mount and use it fine, without entry in fstab, but not share stuff. That is to say: I can use nautilus / thunar to share folders on it without errors, but they are not accessible via the network. The issue may be that the mount point has permissions 700. I can solve that by Code:sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/Databank -o umask=0,nls=utf8or by setting umask=022 in fstab, but then I can't mount it as user anymore; if I set fstab to

If I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in it comes up. The issue is strange in that when a regular non-admin logs in the drive auto mounts but does not for an admin login. I have not been able to put together search results that would lead me to a hint of why this would occur and/or what aresolution may be.Why would the drive auto mount when a regular user logs in but not auto mount for an admin? When I say admin I guess what I mean is a user with more privileges such as member of the admin group.

Ubuntu Security :: Mount.ntfs Ran On Its Own - Normal Or External Hack/break-in Attempt?

Aug 2, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.04 I noticed my hard disc rumbling for longer than normal and louder. Not doing anything demanding to cause hard disk activity like this so I was suspicious so I checked my process list with 'top' command in the console terminal. At the top was mount.ntfs running. Eventually it stopped running after 20 seconds or so. At the time I have not been accessing NTFS filesystems, but I do have them. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I've mounted the Windows main C drive and on the same hard disk a partitioned drive for sharing files between the OSs. I know mount.ntfs is a standard program but was it being run on my machine, instigated externally here? Was the running of mount.ntfs an attempt from outside to hack into Ubuntu and the mounted Windows areas of my machine via a backdoor connection or vulnerability? I've restarted my machine since then. Are there any logs I can check for malicious attempts to break in?

Yet, when I type mount all it reports is (rw,mand). The share works just fine, and I can see the masking (all files are showing as rwxrwxrwx as expected etc) but mount is not listing the options?!

Is this normal expected behavior? Is there a bug report on this? I've google'd to the best of my capabilities and could not locate any such information which is why I decided to hit the forums prior to filing a bug.

The car stereo will read playlists. I'm wondering whether there's an easy way to create playlists so I get these options:

Artists > Artists A-D
Artists > Artists E-G

Genre > Genre A-D

I know rhythmbox can do this manually (as can iTunes) but surely there's an easier way. I'm planning to keep adding more music so an automated process would be nice to keep the playlists refreshed. Where the playlists are saved onto my HDD rather than having to save them one by one.

Debian Installation :: Critical Bug Of "mount -t Ntfs" Cause NTFS Partition Broken

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.

Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW

Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.

info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.

At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.

Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.

But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.

After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.

The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.
