so I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 a couple of days ago and used my whole hard drive.Thing is, I decided that although I loved Ubuntu, I stll want to have dual-boot for some cases.. But now that the disks filesystem is not NTFS, Windows cannot regognise the disk as installable and cannot convert the filesystem. Gosh, Windows is a piece of junk, but I still need them for some occasions.

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
I want to enable Advanced NTFS-3G support (permissions and users) automatically from the fstab entry.

Acctually I intended to dump the iso to a usb disk. Soon I found the "of" is incorrect, but 1 second has passed...
Since everything happens in 1 second, only MBR and /dev/sda1 has been affected. The filesystem of sda1 is ext3.
So, can I get any luck trying to recover data from the broken partition?

View 1 Replies View Related120 GB HDD. All ext4. Wanted to partition it into 60 gig ntfs, and 60 gig ext4 for dual install. Booted up the LiveCD. Clicked on the partition to modify. Selected /windows as mount point. Change took place. Now, my disk shows up as 57 GB FAT (almost all of which is free) and 60 GB of unallocated space. Any way to recover it? I'm sue the data is in the 60 GB of unallocated space. While I have a back up of some of the data, I'm going to be losing quite a bit if I can't recover this...
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I was forced to hard reset my computer a couple of times (mostly out of frustration) and due to my idiocy i was confronted with the standard Kernel Panic message at bootup. I tried running an fsck from live cd which corrected a bunch of errors but to no avail (as far as getting rid of the Kernel Panic msg). I then tried to mount the filesystem by accessing it from live cd (and later even installed ubuntu on a small leftover partition to get rid of the annoying live cd lag) but it says that I don't have access to my home or root folder. Mounting from command line gave the same issue.
So now to the question. Is there a general procedure to access data in my corrupt filesystem if it is encrypted?
I either installed Hardy heron or its predecessor by accident, but began running it exclusively. I did it way back when while trying to create a test drive disk, and I did not repartition the drive, because all my windoze NT stuff survived. I'm now 8.04. Yesterday I had a bunch of updates to do, did them, closed a ton of windows and then pulled up 3 open office files and each, when it came up said there wasn't enough space to save all needed information as they opened. I then closed them and one hung and froze the whole machine, leading me to do a reset. This is BEFORE rebooting from the updates.
Now when I boot into Ubuntu (I'm dual boot) I start to get the opening Ubuntu GUI screen but then get :

initramfs)
I'm essentially a total noob, I've rarely used command line and not for a long time. I made a version 11.04 live disk, and it says that the file system is clean, but will not show me any of my old files, only the NT files and directories. I have a ton of unbacked up important data in Hardy Heron so I don't want to do an install from the 11.04 CD.
I've read several threads so far, and can't seem to find anything addressing this that I understand. The drive is a 160GB drive on an HP Pavilion dual core that has a 154GB NTFS boot partition, which is where I'm sure the Hardy Heron files are, and a 6GB FAT32 HP_RECOVERY partition that windoze lists ad drive D (the NTFS is C) The live disk says the FAT32 partition is /dev/sda1 and the NTFS is /dev/sda2
Where should I start? I've seen stuff about booting into recovery mode, but that isn't an option when I boot from the hard drive, and the only older ubuntu disk I have is for 7.something and generates "defective CD" type error messages.
Suppose I have a good backup of the / root filesystem. How do I recover the / root area? Suppose I have modified the root filesystem, perhaps I do an update some of the packages and regret it, and I want to get back to the system at the time of the backup. How do most linux people recover the root area of a system from a backup?
1) I wondered if I might put a System Rescue CD in and boot off it?
2) And then NFS mount the directory containing the backup? -In my case, I have made a good backup using rsync, to a directory elsewhere on the network.
3) And then, still booted off the System Rescue CD, mount the partition that contains the / root area in question?
4) Would I then clear or empty or delete the contents from the / root partition?
5) And then copy across all the files from the backup into the / root partition?
I ask these questions because of the (very nice) way linux OS is built entirely from packages... Am I being too complicated? (By comparison, I can see it is easy to recover user data.)If, instead, I simply recovered the backup straight onto the updated root filesystem, I wonder what it would look like if I then tried to verify it with "rpm -Va", for example? Surely, all the packages would fail the verification, because it would think it has a later version of each package from the update, but the actual files would have been overwritten by the earlier version from the backup?
I had a perfectly working Western Digital 250GB external usb hdd about 30 minutes ago. It has about 130GB of data I spent 3 hours copying to it yesterday from my Ubuntu laptop. Just to test it, I plugged it into an older Windows XP machine, and it seemed to work just fine. Then I tried to do the "Safely Remove Hardware" thing. It told me that it could not remove the external drive because another program was accessing it. So okay, I just wait a minute or two. Try again -- same thing. Tried it several more times, waiting a minute or two between each try -- same thing. Then suddenly a message pops up -- cannot write to drive. I also get another error: drive is corrupt, run chkdsk utility. Makes no sense. I was accessing files from the drive from within Windows just fine minutes before.
So since it won't "unmount safely", I just unplug it (probably a mistake, but I didn't see that I had any other choice at the moment), then try mounting it using a LiveCD of Puppy Linux -- Puppy will not mount it, just gives an error but no details.
My Ubuntu laptop, however, is no longer usable -- after I copied the 130GB of files I wanted to save to my external hdd, I attempted an upgrade of Ubuntu. It hosed. I'm still on that Puppy Linux LiveCD right now as I type.
So then. I KNOW this external hdd should be recoverable. I didn't do anything to it except let Windows screw up its ability to be mounted/unmounted, somehow. But I do not know how to go about trying to rescue it. What are the tools I should use? Is there something I can download somewhere that I can burn to a bootable CD or something that can fix a broken NTFS drive/partition? It would almost have to be something bootable at this point since I don't know how to install anything new on Puppy. Wasn't there an "Ultimate Linux Bootable Rescue CD" or something like that a while back? I can't remember it's exact name now.
If worst comes to worst, I suppose I could always reformat the external hdd and then copy the files over to it again. I still have all my files on my laptop's hard drive and Puppy can see them -- the Ubuntu upgrade I attempted did not overwrite all my stuff. But....I would just rather avoid having to spend another 3 hours or more today doing that. All my files are already on the external....I just want to fix it so that I can see them again.
i wanted to change the format of my backup drive from ext4 to ntfs. what i thought would be possible without erasing the data, was simply done by formating the drive. but because this took only 6 sec, i have still hope that my data was not completely destroyed. are there any possibilities that i get my data back? i unmounted the drive afterwards and did not write anything to it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my drive I had 2 partitions for an Ubuntu 9.04 (swap, /) and one partition for Windows. I figured out that I should upgrade my Ubuntu, so I deleted the "/" partition and in its place created 2 new partitions (/, /home) .
After installing the latest Ubuntu 11.04, I realised that although I had backuped everything I needed in a 2nd disk and I could access those folders and their data from my Ubuntu 9.04, both my Windows and the 11.04 can locate neither the folders nor the data now. I have no idea why this happened (perhaps some issue with the mounting?) I have tried the trial version of Stellar Phoenix linux data recovery tool, but it cannot locate the old partitions.
I have installed ubuntu on my notebook, and there are 4 partitons in the hdd, all are NTFS, only one is ext4.
the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?
I've formated partition to empty - only erased information that partition is NTFS.
Partition data haven't been changed. So i think only little change to partition table is required.
How can i recover it?
I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

I used my friends removable drive to watch a movie on my laptop, and when he put it back in his it doesn't work.He uses Windows 7. He has alot of stuff on his drive that we would rather not reformat, so Im here asking you fantastic people for help.So he had it formatted to NTFS and now its RAW..I have no idea how. Due to some recent resizing using GParted, the partition as well as my WIndows 7 OS has become unbootable due to some errors. The data partition's file system has become unknown. I don't care much about the OS but I would like to recover my drive. I am trying to achieve this using Testdisk and Photorec but haven't met with much success so far. The main problem is I can see my partition and all my files through Testdisk but I am not able to copy them to another drive. When I try to copy the option I get is of copying them to the DVD and not to any other partition.

I use a mounted NTFS filesystem as my main data storage drive. I then symlink all my Windows folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) into my Ubuntu home folder. Works great, because it means I can share files between Windows and Ubuntu hassle-free. However, any file created on or saved to the NTFS partition automatically has its owner set as "root". Is it possible to set the default owner to me (aaron)? Or does it have to be root on NTFS?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 13 just a few days ago, and it was all working well, until i tried to boot into my windows system. The windows boot loader said that it couldn't load a system file, and suggested i repair the windows system. it did not work, and i dont want to completely reinstall windows because i have some very important VB6 source code, that i do not want to lose. (For all you VB haters, i only use it bcus its really easy to learn. Don't bring the subject up, because i dont want this thread deleted because some jerk decides to start a flame war about it.) I worked really hard on the project, and i dont want to delete it. Fedora still works fine, but come up with this error message when i attempt to mount the NTFS filesystem:

I have gone through different posts on websites regarding how to mount windows drive on to the Linux file system.Here are few results of my trial where results are slightly overwhelming for a guy like me:
1. Mounting NTFS file system using mount commandAs a su-)
" $mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/MyFilesystem"
Output: error: unrecognised file system ntfs
2. I followed step by step instructions of installing Fuse and ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs but had no luck:
while using this command for the installation of for FUSE-0.9(which I guess prepares files for installation) I am getting this error :
" Command use: ./configure --exec-prefix=/; make;make install"
Error: "Checking Kernel source directory.../usr.src/kernels/2.6.32-71.e16.x86_64...Checking Kernel source version.......Not found "
Configure error: cannot determine the version of the Linux kernel source.Please configure the kernel before running this script.
Woooh , as u can see my Linux version is mentioned in that message so can anyone lemme know whether this issue is because of the incompatibility of Fuse with my version of Linux or am I suppose to make some changes in the command itself.
I would like to format a pen drive to NTFS, so that a windows machine can use it, but Im unsure of the filesystem option's in Cfdisk. These are the options:
07 HPFS/NTFS
86 NTFS volume set
87 NTFS volume set
I think 07 is probably the right option, but as always when I dont know something, I like to get some advice from LQ members.

when checking the /proc/filesystems, i noticed that 'ntfs' is not listed there, several forum suggested i try running 'modprobe ntfs'. If that is not found, you'll need a kernel with ntfs support. i'm so lost, where to i get the modprobe ntfs

I can't active vg because haven't name, but is not lvm, is only ntfs partition Maybe ubuntu puts in lvm and grub? Any idea? If I change with fdisk to ntfs i lose all the information in the partition?
