I want to monitor network traffic with ntop from a Lucid 10.04 machine. Both NICs have picked up an IP address, I need to put one in promiscuous mode. They use E1000E drivers.One card is working while the other identical card is not. Linux can see all 8 ports are visible with dmesg | grep pcie.I suspect the drivers on the second card have not been loaded. How would I load the drivers?

1. If you are on a laptop check that the network function key is turned on. Mine is on F12 and has a bluish light for ON and reddish light for OFF.
2. Go to System > Administration > Users and Groups > Advanced Settings > User Privileges Check you have relevant permissions for Connecting to Wireless Networks and the Internet. (Also turned my audio on here after much trial)

I have setup a dual boot machine which has OS of Windows Vista (32 Bit) / RHEL 5. The LAN Card details are - Atheros L2 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base T - Controller. The said Network Card works fine with the ADSL Connection in Windows OS, but does not seem to initialise in Linux. When I run "ifconfig" in terminal window it gives away the prompt - "eth0 no such device exists".Although it shoes the loopback adapter (lo) device working fine. I forgot to mention over here, I have just started with Linux. So, I request "the" Linux Gurus to help me out with this one.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 wlan cards. wlan0 and wlan1. wlan0 is in AP mode(Master mode) using hostap. wlan1 is connected to another wireless network and is in Managed mode. Now I want to make a bridge between wlan0 and wlan1. I do it like that:
ifconfig wlan0 0.0.0.0
ifconfig wlan1 0.0.0.0
brctl addbr mybridge
brctl addif mybridge wlan1
can't add wlan1 to bridge mybridge: Operation not supported
It doesnt work, because wlan1 is in managed mode. But Windows 7 can bridge 2 Wlan cards when one is AP and another one is STA. How to do it in Linux?

I like to test my network often. Until recently, I've been doing so on my old Ubuntu 6.06 laptop... the problem is It's too slow (1.06 GHz single Core ), and old, (designed for Win 2000) to really be effective any more. So, recently I bought a new laptop...one with a Dual core Processor, and twice the speed. Anyway, I'm running Fedora Core 10 X86_64 on it. My problem is as follows:
Although I do have MadWifi installed, for some reason, I still can't put my Atheros based Netgear WPN511 into monitor mode. (in the Network configuration window, it says "Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+" I'm not sure what it means but I'll put it in in case it helps) does MadWifi not work with Fedora? if not, is there a Fedora 10 (X86_64) alternative?
