I just installed Linux Mint XFCE (newly-released Debian Based OS)My Problem is that I cannot get the volume buttons on my keyboard to work. I've done some research and it appears I need to install the "xfce4-volumed" package and I have done so. Still the buttons do not work. I've also tried installing xfce4 and also gstreamer.Nothing has worked.
View 4 Repliesso i just got a nice hp keyboard from my dad (very slim) to use with my laptop and external monitor. it has a volume up key, a volume down key, and a mute key. the only problem is, the computer thinks they are actually letter keys. whenever i press volume up, it thinks i hit "b" and types that on the screen. the same goes for the other two buttons. is there anyway i can get them to function normally? everything else works.

I used all the OEM software originally, but ended up following this step-by-step guide to run all pulse audio. After installing that I noticed that the sound keys on my laptop still showed that they changed the volume, but didn't have any effect in PulseAudio Volume Control... fixed that by changing the keyboard layout. While that bugged me the sound still came out of my speakers and headphone jack, but just recently the speakers randomly stopped working. Has anyone else experienced this?Computer:Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-4JUWindows 7, and Ubuntu 9.04*Edit- I tried to make it in one post, but it would not allow me yet saying I tried to post a link.

There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

So if I turn the volume all the way down with the physical buttons, the volume applet may still indicate 75%.I did not have this problem in Debian Lenny. Pressing the volume buttons used to show a volume bar on the screen, as did pressing the mute button.

After spending quite a few hours resurrecting it, it works just fine except for the left and right mouse buttons on the touch pad. They do not function.Is there a way to emulate the left and right mouse buttons from the keyboard?(I know that I can just plug in a mouse, but I would rather just use the keyboard if possible.)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI disabled pulse audio in favor of just working with jack, alsa_in & alsa_out and everything works pretty well except for one thing.
When I enable pulseaudio I can control the volume with my multimedia keys, volume up, volume down, mute.
If I kill pulseaudio not only do I not have volume controls but the little widget in the top bar seems to be broken.
I looked in my /etc/acpi/ folder and see these files relating to volume

nothing comes up for those keys, the terminal cursor just blinks.
also one more thing, those keys are set to shortcuts in the settings->keyboard->shortcut menu.
I can control my device with the amixer so I would like to just bind amixers functions to the keys but I don't really know how to go about doing that.
How can I bind amixers commands with those keys?
I use a Compal KLH B0 laptop if I recall correctly. (It's rebranded but great!) It uses a completely standard keyboard where Fn+F7 and Fn+F8 are the volume buttons. This happens with all SDL games I have.

I have the keyboard: HP 6511-SU and it has a lot of buttons that would be useful to me; however, Ubuntu does not even recognize and does absolutely nothing with the majority of the buttons it has. The ones that it does pick up, it is mapped incorrectly (ex.: the media button, "stop" would be mapped to "eject". That's easily corrected by remapping it by going to System> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts. Is there a program or configuration file that will map the unrecognized buttons?

Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. I have a wireless keyboard with touchpad However the position of the mouse buttons is very unconfortable and so I would like to remap the mouse button to some kes on the keyboard.
I would like to use the media keys which are present on the keyboard. They are useless to me since most of the programs that I use have their own keyboard shortcuts for controls such as play, stop etc.
I mapped the keys using xev, and for instance I found that the "play" key mapped to keycode 172
by trying someting like

nothing happens.
I am using ubuntu8.04 and i am not able to umount my usb using unmount option even as root on command line.
If i try the same using mouse right click, it showing error mesage as follows. "Cannot unmount volume. The volume 'STEEVEN_1' was probably mounted manually on the command line. Details: Device to unmount is not in /media/.halmtab so it is not mounted by HAL."
usb label is appearing even after the unmouting the usb manually.
next time mounting adding another hyphen to the usb label as follows.
steeven_1, steeven_1_, steeven_1__, steeven_1___ etc.
After running my computer for a while, my volume control always messes up. I wonder if it is some app. Mute, raise, lower volume all fail, and so does the little volume icon in my notification area. When the computer boots up things are fine. I can do some more testing later to try and pinpoint the source but I need to wait a few hours for a download to finish. I can still use Advanced Volume Control and all the options there work.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
I switched from Windows to Linux, and one thing I'm missing is Altnnnn keyboard shortcuts to insert an em dash and other things. Is there any way to get them working under Linux? I'm using Arch Linux and KDE, if that matters.

I have a ubuntu loaded in KDE and this is in dual boot with Windows vista. I was "upgrading" my Linux (through update manager) when my computer just shut down. And when i restarted the computer to login to the Linux all I got was blank screen. I logged into recovery mode and selected the option to fix the packages. I rebooted my system and then again logged into the Linux. This time I could get the login screen but my mouse as well as Keyboard was not recognized. Essentially i cannot type or scroll and cannot login into Linux.

I have dell inspiron 600m with xubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates.
I do have sound when I click on the sound indicter on the top right it brings me to the mixer where I could adjust the sound by clicking and dragging the slider up or down.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop with a fresh install of Lenny and KDE 3.5.10.On the computer there are these 7 Keys. I only care about the 3 related to sound. Now everything works perfect in Gnome, but when I switch to KDE, the 3 audio buttons don't work. I can't seem to figure out why and get them working. Does anyone have a solution for this? Again, they work in GNOME but not KDE.

So I tried exiting and used xwmconfig to switch to KDE from fluxbox. In KDE the buttons work.
I want to use the Control + windows key on my keyboard to do a killall firefox-bin. What I've done so far is gone in to gconf-editor, and under apps->metacity->keybinding_commands I made command 1 as killall firefox-bin and under global_keybindings, run_command_1 I have <Control><Super_L> . What am I doing wrong?
