I upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now my sound control buttons on the key board don't work
I have dell inspiron 600m with xubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates.
I do have sound when I click on the sound indicter on the top right it brings me to the mixer where I could adjust the sound by clicking and dragging the slider up or down.
In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop with a fresh install of Lenny and KDE 3.5.10.On the computer there are these 7 Keys. I only care about the 3 related to sound. Now everything works perfect in Gnome, but when I switch to KDE, the 3 audio buttons don't work. I can't seem to figure out why and get them working. Does anyone have a solution for this? Again, they work in GNOME but not KDE.

I used all the OEM software originally, but ended up following this step-by-step guide to run all pulse audio. After installing that I noticed that the sound keys on my laptop still showed that they changed the volume, but didn't have any effect in PulseAudio Volume Control... fixed that by changing the keyboard layout. While that bugged me the sound still came out of my speakers and headphone jack, but just recently the speakers randomly stopped working. View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a Toshiba Nb205 laptop with a Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) inside. After I first got it I installed Ubuntu onto it, and that's where the problems started. After everything was installed I noticed that my sound doesn't work. So I looked everywhere. I tried so many solutions offered on these forums including messing around with Alsamixer and nothing seemed to be working. Then one day I luckily stumbled upon this website that directed me here: [URL] So I went there and picked the Linux 2.6(X86)(DEB) from the drop down list and installed it. I rebooted my machine, and I now had sound.
However, the only problem is that I can't control the volume of the sound. When I play something, it stays at one volume and one volume only. Nothing on sound preferences will work. The only way I can raise or lower the volume is if I do it in the application that I run, like if I am playing a ..... video, I have to use their volume control to control the volume. My master volume won't work at all.
after installing trying to install veetle on my ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I always get the message at the start-up:could not update /home/user/.ICEauthority.my sound control does not work anymore (message: 'waiting for sound system to respond')using Krusader I get the message 'Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde. klauncher was not provided by any .service files.I checked the owner of .ICEauthority and the permission and they are OK. Command works to restore my buttons but I've got a couple problems
1. I have to leave this terminal open permanently. If I try to close it (and "kill" the process) not only do I lose my windows controls but my keyboard stops working entirely.
2. Have to put this in every time I log back in.
Is there a better solution for restoring my windows control buttons (i.e., one that doesn't require me to open a terminal every time I log in?)
I realize that this may be a nit-picky complaint, but why did you guys move the window control buttons from the upper right corner to the upper left corner? Is there any way that I can move them back? They weren't this way in 9.10 or before, and they aren't this way on any of the computers that I work with at my job.

In a Gnome desktop I could set up the volume too, but now as I'm using Fluxbox I can't start the volume control applet anymore (by the way does somebody knows any handy volume applet for Fluxbox ?)So my question is that if some button of my remote control already work without lirc, then there must by some drivers installed, when I've upgraded to a newer kernel, but I can't figure out what makes my remote control to work. Does anybody knows something about this and if there's something already installed for IR devices in newer kernels how can it be further configured ?If i type the command "cat /dev/input/event6" in my terminal I can see that all my remote control buttons give a signal, but still I can't figure it out how can I set up all of them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLaptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
I have sound on my main speakers and I can control volume from the desktop's icon tray volume control on the screen.However, my headphones were working just fine until all of a sudden they just stopped working. I tried other headphones but no change.Also, my volume control on my keyboard suddenly stopped working too.Any ideas how I can get the headphones and keyboard volume control working again?

What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?
i just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 the netbook distro. at the desktop view there is a list of about 10 buttons/menus listed on the left hand side, is there anyway to control what buttons/menus are listed and which icons are listed under each of them? having a netbook i would like to remove and unclutter the desktop view as much as possible but i dont want to remove those apps i still want to be able to open those apps if i want to even if by removing those icons and menus/buttons makes it a pain.

Ubuntu 10.10 on Samsung NC10.
After running my computer for a while, my volume control always messes up. I wonder if it is some app. Mute, raise, lower volume all fail, and so does the little volume icon in my notification area. When the computer boots up things are fine. I can do some more testing later to try and pinpoint the source but I need to wait a few hours for a download to finish. I can still use Advanced Volume Control and all the options there work.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
I just installed Linux Mint XFCE (newly-released Debian Based OS)My Problem is that I cannot get the volume buttons on my keyboard to work. I've done some research and it appears I need to install the "xfce4-volumed" package and I have done so. Still the buttons do not work. I've also tried installing xfce4 and also gstreamer.Nothing has worked.

So I tried exiting and used xwmconfig to switch to KDE from fluxbox. In KDE the buttons work.
I use VNC, open an xterm, and for example when I press "NumPad7", it completes "Home" command. Also "NumPad1" is mapped to "End". In fact there is a code for .cshrc that does the work required. But unfortunately I can't translate it into a bash code. Please help me to translate. Here is the code:

I updated Lucid yesterday, and when I restarted the user interface was changed to a more simple feeling display. This makes me think I'm stuck in a "basic" mode or something. I attached a screen shot, but to give you an idea ill describe some issues. For one thing the minimize buttons are now on the right. The volume control, which used to appear on the top right of the screen, is gone and my multimedia volume control buttons on my Inspiron 1420 no longer work. Furthermore, the command terminal is now white and the keyboard shortcuts for copy and past don't work.
Immediately after updating I also got an error message at login (which also appears different and gives options on bottom of screen like gnome Failsafe) which said something like "gnome default power management installed incorrectly...". I followed the advice of a forum thread that involved the purge command and that seemed to remedy that message.
I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.
A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.
So I have the following questions:
a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?
b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?
c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?
d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.
I recently updated my ALSA drivers to 1.0.23 and I am also running the latest version of flash (v10) and I'm having problems with sound. When I open a flash video in any browser i cannot control the volume from the master volume control. the application does not even show up under the applications tab in the volume control. I'm sick of loading flash videos with sound being turned up all the way.

Since doing an upgrade from Koala to Lynx, my volume control (up in the top right corner of the screen) has vanished. I can still mute and control volume by going into the Sound menu in Preferences, but I really miss having it on the taskbar.
