Ubuntu :: Configure Keyboard Media Buttons?

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 running 10.04. It has four buttons on the top left side of the keyboard (http://images.tigerdirect.com/SkuIma...5-AS3680-e.JPG) but I want to make them do specific things (like open the terminal, or firefox). How would I go about doing this?

Does anyone know which component of the GNOME desktop is responsible for interpreting the media buttons on my keyboard? I would like to run this component in KDE, because KDE doesn't handle the media buttons correctly. I am not talking about the icon in the system tray.

so i just got a nice hp keyboard from my dad (very slim) to use with my laptop and external monitor. it has a volume up key, a volume down key, and a mute key. the only problem is, the computer thinks they are actually letter keys. whenever i press volume up, it thinks i hit "b" and types that on the screen. the same goes for the other two buttons. is there anyway i can get them to function normally? everything else works.

I have the keyboard: HP 6511-SU and it has a lot of buttons that would be useful to me; however, Ubuntu does not even recognize and does absolutely nothing with the majority of the buttons it has. The ones that it does pick up, it is mapped incorrectly (ex.: the media button, "stop" would be mapped to "eject". That's easily corrected by remapping it by going to System> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts. Is there a program or configuration file that will map the unrecognized buttons?

i'm looking for a way to map some of my mouse buttosn to activate certain keyboard shortcuts.I went thru the Compiz setting Manager but they only allow predetermined actions to be mapped.What I want, for example is to map a mouse button to trigger SHIFT+A to quiclky mark items as read in Google Reader or another one to quickly select unread emails in Gmail.

I just installed Linux Mint XFCE (newly-released Debian Based OS)My Problem is that I cannot get the volume buttons on my keyboard to work. I've done some research and it appears I need to install the "xfce4-volumed" package and I have done so. Still the buttons do not work. I've also tried installing xfce4 and also gstreamer.Nothing has worked.

I have a wireless keyboard with touchpad However the position of the mouse buttons is very unconfortable and so I would like to remap the mouse button to some kes on the keyboard.
I would like to use the media keys which are present on the keyboard. They are useless to me since most of the programs that I use have their own keyboard shortcuts for controls such as play, stop etc.
I mapped the keys using xev, and for instance I found that the "play" key mapped to keycode 172
by trying someting like
xmodmap -e "keycode 172 = Pointer_Button1"
nothing happens.

I am running Linux Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron laptop that I bought at a garage sale for 50 cents. After spending quite a few hours resurrecting it, it works just fine except for the left and right mouse buttons on the touch pad. They do not function.Is there a way to emulate the left and right mouse buttons from the keyboard?(I know that I can just plug in a mouse, but I would rather just use the keyboard if possible.)

I disabled pulse audio in favor of just working with jack, alsa_in & alsa_out and everything works pretty well except for one thing.
When I enable pulseaudio I can control the volume with my multimedia keys, volume up, volume down, mute.
If I kill pulseaudio not only do I not have volume controls but the little widget in the top bar seems to be broken.
I looked in my /etc/acpi/ folder and see these files relating to volume

nothing comes up for those keys, the terminal cursor just blinks.
also one more thing, those keys are set to shortcuts in the settings->keyboard->shortcut menu.
I can control my device with the amixer so I would like to just bind amixers functions to the keys but I don't really know how to go about doing that.
How can I bind amixers commands with those keys?

Got to say first off, I have LOVED the 10.10 release, absolutely adore it. Only problem that I have noticed thus far, is that when I use any of the non standard buttons, it causes my left clicking to stop working.
It's not a big deal but something that does come in handy every once in a while =/

I want to build a computer inside my car mainly for having ALL my music in the car's hard drive. I want to run ubuntu (or ubuntu netbook edition) on it and be able to navigate quickly without using a mouse. Running programs is no problem but navigating any music players without a mouse is terrible. Are there any music players that have an ipod/xmb interface and are easy to navigate using mainly the arrow keys/enter? I have considered just using a touchscreen but I really want to find a way so all I need is a keyboard with 5 or 6 keys.

how to possible to configure the buttons on my scanner (HP Scanjet 3300C - it's an old one) to actually perform the tasks they're intended to do. The scanner itself works absolutely perfect despite its age (over a decade old).. however it has two physical buttons with a scanner and a printer icon on it. Now I don't particularly care much for the scan button, but it would be awesome if the print button automatically send whatever it's scanning to the printer as soon as it's done.
The only two things I could find that seem to be written with the idea to fulfill this role are KScannerButtons and scanbuttond. Both haven't received an update in years (2006 and 2007) and only seem to be good for spitting out an error. I also tried installing hp-lib, but it doesn't even recognize the printer (I'm guessing HP doesn't support hardware that old). Not sure if it would get me further even it was recognized.

I am now doing just about all my work in Weakdows due to this retarded issue. I'm flabbergasted that not only is a function so crucial so limited, but in addition nobody seems to give a rat's ass about it. If you're not familiar with the issue, just go ahead and try configuring more than four keyboard layouts. If you can, tell me what distribution you're using and we'll be good, but I believe there's something that changed about the central X service which provides for layout changing which prevents it.
I'm a linguist and it's important for me to be able to type in English - on Dvorak and Qwerty - German, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and whatever else I need to at any given time. I'm not the only person who does this, and a significant number of us like to be able to control our computers, which is why we use Linux. So it's clear to me that whoever made the decision to put this restriction on keyboard functionality just wasn't thinking at all.

Does anyone know of a *nix that can handle configuring more than four keyboard layouts? Is there even a hack that will allow me to get around this issue? I had thought about creating a script to swap the config file so I'd at least be able to access multiple configurations of 4 keyboards easily, but between not knowing where that config file is and being pretty bad at bash I never pursued it.

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

I recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

I found a tool made for Ubuntu called Xautoclick. I downloaded it and it is called "xautoclick-0.30.tar.gz" The installation notes say "tallatBe sure you have the proper development packages for your distribution installed (i.e. something like xserver-xorg-dev, gtk2-dev, et cetera). After that, run:
./configure make sudo make install" I have no clue what to do... I typed in "./configure" in the terminal and it says "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory?
