I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
My laptop has been working fine with ubuntu 10.04, and earlier today it shut down after running out of battery. I came to use itr and discovered that the wifi icon had disappeared from the panel bar, and it won't connect to the wireless networkor via a wired connection.I have had a play around with this, tried ping -c5 google.comresult was:ping: unknown host google.comand ping -c5 4.2.2.1result: onnect:etwork is unreachable.I have other computers connecting to this network and know that it is working fine.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI took the plunge and made a clean install of 10.04 because it sounded cool (and it is, I like it!) and now I'm tied to a wall again I've gone through several of the broadcom wireless card tutorials on the forums and the only thing I've managed to get is a lit up wifi light. It's not detecting an active unsecured network several inches away, that has computers up and running on it... I'm perfectly willing to post more details as needed.

I have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Vostro 1500 for awhile, one morning I tried to get online & no networks would show up. I tried plugging in my ethernet cable & still nothing. Just the two lights by the plug stay lit up. If I boot into Puppy Linux the wireless works just fine. I was using the B43 driver before I had problems, then when I was trying to get it to work I accidentally deleted the driver. I cannot figure out how to get my internet working again in Ubuntu. I don't want to be stuck using Puppy Linux forever! I don't really know many commands, normally just search online how to fix problems, but it's pretty hard to do when I have to boot back & forth between operating systems to find things to try.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.
I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.
I just got a new laptop...Dell Vostro 3500. Took off Win put on Ubuntu...all went fine. I did all updates and app downloads using my WIRED NETWORK as wireless wasnt working. However I was more interested in setting up the new computer. Anyway so after all is installed up pops "Broadcom STA Wireless driver" Proprietary driver do you want to install. Obviously I said yes...
Well now My wireless is working great but for some reason my Wired (auto eth0) no longer works. It just says disconnected and its grayed in. I'm pretty much a newbie but did try a few things like:
apt-get update
apt-get "something" essential (thats not a command just from memory it was something like that)
However I've had no luck. This Broadcom driver seems to have knocked out my wired network.

Address: 192.168.1.254 (the local IP of my router)
Netmask: 255.255.252.0

I have installed karmic on my inspiron E1505. Everything is working fine except the wireless connectivity.
I have been following the below thread for getting wireless to work. I am stuck at step -3 (compiling - DISWRAPPER) .

I have recently upgraded from 10.06 to 11.04 today and am having problems getting my wireless working. On 10.06 it was working just fine after I used the additional driver utility. Now on 11.04 I have used the additional driver utility and installed the Broadcom STA wireless driver that it says is required, but the internet connections on the top toolbar only recognizes my wired connection.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop a few days ago and love the OS so far. However, initially i could only get internet connection though an ethernet cord. After much internet searching, i finally figured out how to get wireless internet. Unfortunately, in setting up wireless internet, I no longer have wired internet. The system doesn't seem to recognize my wired internet anymore. I'd like a scenario where i can connect to the internet both wired and wireless.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 and Xubuntu 10.10 on a dell pc. My wireless works fine when I run windows 7, but on Xubuntu, the wireless doesn't even come as an option. When I try to plug in the wired connection, it loads for about a minute then tells me I'm disconnect. The option for the wired connection is there, but when I try to click it, the same thing happens. What do I do?

I have never seen this before but to connect to the internet either wired or wireless I have to connect to a broadband connection as well. I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.
I am using ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso that I had put onto a USB drive. It booted fine, but when I tried accessing the internet I couldn't. I was able to connect to the ISP, but I couldn't find any settings for a broadband connection. My computer is a Acer Aspire One Netbook 250
Intel Atom
CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz
1.60 GHz 1.99 GB of RAM
Network Adapters
Atheros AR 5B95 Wireless Network Adapter

For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
today i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.
As of now, my internet works fine when connected with an ethernet cable. The problem is it doesnt seem like my wireless is working at all.The led light is orange, (its usually blue when it connects) and I cannot see my home dsl network. Is thereany specific troubleshooting steps I should take?HP dv6000 laptopwireless card: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer. I boot into Ubuntu with a flash drive. When I boot, I cannot connect to a wireless network. No available networks are displayed (and I know my router is on) and the Network Manager icon displays no bars. I suspect that the Dell Wireless card (having a Broadcom BCM-4312 chipset) needs a driver. I have tried to intstall both of the restricted drivers (BCM STA and 43xx drivers), but with no success. I have run lspci in Terminal, and got many lines of text. Here are the lines that look relevant to me:
Code: 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 13) 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) In Windows 7, everything is just fine. In Ubuntu, my wired connection works like a charm, but is not really accessible. Basically, I have to connect to wireless in Ubuntu or I have no reason for having it.
I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.
