I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

I have to use alsa for audio to work under wine (otherwise pulseaudio starts eating up processor cycles and the audio comes out horrible and distorted), but I have been unable to use the mic. The mic boost is up on the alsa mixer, and they are not muted. I cannot find any options under my system menu for Sound Preferences (which seems to get references in a lot fo help forums), or anywhere else to determine which audio driver the line in on the front uses.
I'm using an Acer laptop from a couple years ago, so support should be no problem.

I recently managed to install it on a PC alongside Windows XP (seperate hard disk's). Anyways I downloaded AVG 8.5.732 (avg85flx-r732-a3168.i386.deb) and installed the package (Synaptic Package Manager lists it as being installed) but I can't find in the Ubuntu Software Centre nor can I find it in the system/main menu list.

I have been following a tutorial to get wireless working on my laptop. But the funny thing is, I can not find the hardware driver settings. In the tutorial they say: "Under the desktop menu System > Administration > Hardware/Additional Drivers, the b43 drivers can be activated for use." My KDE desktop looks like this:
[URL]
I am very confused and uncertain how to proceed. Besides this little confusion, is there a way to get the normal KDE desktop back? With the taskbar at the lower-side of the screen?

Recently I upgraded from my long outdated Kubuntu 6.06 dapper installation to the new LTS, 8.04 hardy. Ever since everything has been working smoothly and going well, but there's one problem: I can't mount either my external USB HDD or my SD card in my USB card reader. When I try to mount either in Konqueror (Media:/) by right clicking on the device and clicking Mount I get this:Code:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other errorIn some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or soI also get this in the console:Code:mattmodica@Dothan:/media$ sudo mount sda1[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstabmount: can't find sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtabmattmodica@Dothan:/media$The first method I tried (doing it in Konqueror) worked in dapper 6.06 just fine.If I run dmesg | tail in console I get this:
Code:

I hope this is posted in the right forumI have a dual boot ubuntu 10-4 and windows vista each on a separate 500 GB drive.nt to install Windows 7 in place of vista but I understand that there are some issues with grub 2 if vista and linux are already installed. Also can it be done from within Vista as an upgrade without doing a complete reinstall.I also wondered if installing windows 7 as a virtual box would be a better option.only have a few programs that I need to run in windows but I do use them regularly.

I'm looking to upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and would like to check if there's anything special I need to do. Software-wise there's nothing out of the ordinary on the system but, while looking into upgrading, I've read some horror stories regarding encrypted systems. I've only previously installed from fresh.
Here is how my current partitions/filesystems are set out:
. sda1/sdb1 > raid > ext2: boot
. sda2/sdb2 > raid > luks > lvm > ext3: root
. sda2/sdb2 > raid > luks > lvm > ext3: swap
. sda2/sdb2 > raid > luks > lvm > xfs: data
. sdc1/sdd1 > raid > luks > lvm > freespace: vms
Would this just be a standard upgrade, as per these? [URL]. I will be backing up important data before I attempt to upgrade.

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 after the windows xp os, and then my grub.cfg file only contained information about linux.. my windows os couldnot be booted..But thats fine because i now work only on linux, so I could normally boot into ubuntu..
But now i tried to install fedora 12 on that partition on which windows was installed, and i set the space of that partition as "free". And then something went wrong, and i could not install fedora.
Now wen i boot into the normal ubuntu linux from the local hard disk, this error appears on screen - "No bootable media present, enter bootable disk and press enter."
I can boot into the installed os by first booting from a live cd, and selecting the "boot from local disk" option. But i cannot boot without a live cd.
I also reinstalled grub-pc package, but no change.

I am a n00b to Ubuntu, been using it under dual boot with Windoze for about a year, and have found this forum to be a great help - so I am hoping someone can help me out with this "mystery".I wanted to try out the Kubuntu live CD in order to see if I'd like KDE interface better (I used some SuSE 11.2 lately and liked it).I did whatever I do with Ubuntu (under my Win7 environment) - downloaded the iso (x64)- burned it to a CD usinf imgBurner- checked the CD - seemed active enough, Windows installer popped up- rebooted the computerI got the usual language menu, chose English, got the usual "Try kubuntu without...", "install kubuntu"... menu and hit enter to Try and... nothing!? Every option I clicked responded with "nothing" except F keys, and "Boot from first hard disk".I tried a bunch of things - burning with CDBurnerXP, using it on another computer, downloading an iso from a different mirror

I have already read the related threads but unfortunately, none of the solutions works/ applies to my problem: Having Ubuntu 10.10 as bootable DVD, I am trying to upgrade from Jaunty. When I do so however, after selcting "Install Ubuntu 10.10" in the installer menu I get the "unable to find medium containing live file system" error. I already installed grub2 and set acpi=off, my DVD is on primary master and, obviously boots as well.

Installing backtrack4 tools with menu structure in Kubuntu 9.10 *NOTE* This WILL break your kpackagekit !!! You will need to reinstall kpackagekit after the installation is complete or fix it with synaptic. *This may or may not break your system so do at your own risk* For this to work you will need to follow these instructions EXACTLY as it is here. Go to: [URL] Download the tarzip and open it up. INSTALLING THE BACKTRACK SUB MENU STRUCTURE
Place the menu_backup folder in your home directory. <<----YOU WILL NEED THIS FOR THIS TO WORK Open the BT4-app-list folder and place the backtrack.txt1 file also in your home directory. Open a shell and type: kdesudo dolphin /etc/xdg/menus Delete the kd4-applications.menu file. (dont worry, I have provided a backup copy in the download) Open the BT4-kde4-applicantions.menu folder and place it where you deleted the old menu. Now you can exit.
Now you have the bt4 sub menu. ADDING THE BT4 GPG KEY AND REPO Open a shell and type: wget -q [URL] This adds the GPG key. Then in a shell type: sudo echo "deb [URL] pwnsauce main microverse macroverse restricted universe multiverse" > /etc/apt/sources.list

I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu. Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output
Code:

I'm having difficulty upgrading from 6.06lts to 10.10.
I have downloaded and burnt a cd, however it freezes on any option from the boot menu. I've tried the various options to no avail.
So i then tried a frugal install using unetbootin however when I try bootin through that using the 10.10 iso it comes up with this
Code:
My computer cannot boot from a usb. I have tried.

I just recently built a 64 bit AMD Phenom quad core desktop. I have installed Kubuntu 10.10. I have an HP DVD burner with Lightscribe capability. When I try to download and install the software using GDebi I get a message that states that it cannot install the 32 bit software on my 64 bit computer. I read the threads and none of them have worked " using the directions provided". Using the command line and force architecture I got an error message every time. Can anyone who has succeeded in doing this give me the commands in simple "newbie" English to I can use Lightscribe along with Lacie Lightscribe on my 64 bit computer?

I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.
