I tried to upgrade through Ubuntu Jaunty .04 to Koala but couldn't, I think it had something to do with the Kubuntu I have dowloaded also, (like it goes to the same splash screen and I choose if I want to go to Ubuntu or Kubuntu) the kubuntu is on the 8. version. how do I fix this so I can upgrade to Koala?

Recently installed Kubuntu karmic koala (9.10) and I have no sound other then the startup sound.

I have a problem after upgrading from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.1 (LTS): after reboot I get the login panel but when I type login + password, the system begin to go ahead but immediately comes back to login panel, so I can't get the Desktop obviously .
I checked the following : The kubuntu-desktop is already in place the kdm I think it works well (start & stop work) and the file xorg.conf has been rebuilded with the cmd "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".
I was running kubuntu 7.10 from 2007 till two days back. Thought it quite old, so wanted to upgrade from 7.10 to 9.10, and if I like the latest kde 4 (since I've not used it yet), the plan was to use the lucid lynx. The two phase upgrade from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 9.10 went seamlessly without any hitch. But now the problem started to occur, and I will point them one by one:
1. While booting, the startup splash screen falls into a console which read "checking battery state DONE" and it stays there forever. So, I opened another terminal by ctrl-alt-F1, gave my login id, password, type startx to go into the graphical mode.
Everything looks fine, though I find the new KDE way of changing the keyboard shortcuts ( like ctrl-alt-D to minimize to desktop) or difficulty of assigning keyboard shortcuts to applications, or the maneuvering of the panel, no quick launch space, etc.. a, well, bit difficult. But that another issue. Now I wanted to shutdown, there is one button say leave and if I click there it shows, "Sleep", "Hibernate", "Switch user", "Logout" etc. I didn't understand whether Logout will actually shut the system down. Now, while shutting down, as expected, it falls to the opened tty1, and from there I had to do a shutdown -h now to actually shut the system down.
2. Now, Iwanted to add some application to the quick launch section (just right to the K- button). After adding them, I messed the panel, I can't see which application I am opening, the minimized state is not showing and the total panel length is reduced. So I searched some ubuntu forums, and removed the .kde folder and restarted the system. The biggest problem started from there, whatever application I open, there is no title bar (the top bar where minimize, maximize, close button is available). And the system hangs completely. I tried the do
Code: kquitapp plasma-desktop or removing the plasma-* from .kde/config/ folder, but to no avail, the system is getting worser.
3. Also, I noticed the konqueror is crashing while trying the open that.
I have an internal intel graphics card. Now, please advise what I should do, should I go back to 7.10 again, is there any I can fix the desktop graphics. I have no problem in doing anything in command line to fix the issues.
I tryed to installed ubuntu 11.04 but that dont work with grub bootloader.
So i tryed kubuntu 11.04 instad, that work.
Used :Sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
But i dont get this menus:
I just get this wallpaper (Without menus?)
Is it some "Requirement" that i need? E.g display-drives/OpenGL or someting?
If not will this menu`s be disabled?

I have insatalled Kubuntu using wubi (in windows). But when I am running Kubuntu it is showing the following error.

A couple weeks ago I became fed up with using Backtrack5 as a primary OS, as fun as it is, and installed Kubuntu 64-bit for AMD on a laptop with an intel chip. I didn't see an intel iso on Kubuntu's site right away, and I suppose I was too excited to try it to care. I have been having some problems with plugins working correctly, but i'm not even sure this architectural mixup is to blame for that.
To cut to the chase, should I be worried about installing kubuntu that was intended for AMD on a board with an intel chip? I figure i havent really done anything I can't easily redo yet, and if I want to reinstall, i'd like to do it before I cross that bridge!
When I try to install Kubuntu 10.04 from the live CD (ran the installer from the Live Desktop) I get this error:
I then get sent back to the partitioner after clicking continue. Nothing but the installer/live desktop is using the cdrom. How do I install it? I have also tried running the installer without the live desktop, and it still throws the same error at me.
I have a problem, because installation of ubuntu 11.04 will fail if I try to.
I have also Kubuntu and Xubuntu installed, which I regret a lot because I cannot uninstall them as well...
The problem is that I have installed a one-time-activation proprietary software so a fresh install is no option.
The error when upgrading is, that "xubuntu-desktop" cannot be marked for upgrade!
I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu.Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output

I have since tried the HOWTO: Install Azureus (newest, non-repo way) method of installing Vuze/Azureus, which I think is what I set up for 9.04, and also a synaptic complete removal and reinstall which didn't work.
I have an .azureus folder in my home dir which I would like to keep because it contains my settings and half downloaded torrents etc.
I would be happy to use the the synaptic packaged version of Vuze because it is much more up to date than it has been in the past.

I'm kind of new to Linux even though I've played with it several times over the years. My question is this. I just installed Kubuntu from the SPM in Ubuntu and when I did a reboot, I can't login using my previous username and password. My assumption was that it would just use the same username and password from Ubuntu.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have Win7, Kubuntu and a third OS (and home) partition for trying out others. I did Arch, Debian and Chakra without problems with triple booting. I skipped the bootloader installation/configuration step when installing those, booted into Kubuntu and ran update-grub to get the new one added to the boot list.
I used a separate partition for /boot (sda6), and have only one hard drive in this machine.
Following the same procedure (skip bootloader install) with openSUSE 10.3, I managed to loose the ability to boot Kubuntu.
I know the Kubuntu partition is fine (or at least still intact) and have since been able to get Windows added to the grub menu after a few attempts with grub-install and update-grub, which boots.
I've installed up a copy of Kubuntu 9.10. I want to use it to play eve online and replace my copy of windows. So far I have managed to get it installed, got the video drivers and wine sorted, and got eve online to work with wine. I'm quite happy with myself up until odd things started to happen. Basically, I want to recompile my Nvidia driver to a newer version, I know how to do this, I need to press ctrl alt F1 to drop to terminal, kill kde and then install the driver, i've done it before without issue. However this time around something is wrong. I press ctrl alt F1 and the black terminal window pops up... but I have no option to log in, same for terminals 2 - 6.
I did this, and sure enough none of my tty processes are showing, i've basically lost my terminals , as far as my limited experience goes, getty is responsible for the terminals right? How do I reinstate my terminals and get to a point I can kill kde and get back to shell? I have no idea what i've done to get in this state. Also, as a side question, before all got screwed up and i did manage to launch eve online, I could run one client perfectly. However with 2 clients things got all choppy and laggy? why is this? I can run 2 quite happily under windows 7
I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

Updater told me 9.1 was available so I used updater to upgrade my system. Normally I'd use apt-get dist-upgrade. Since then, apt-get / amarok and updater won't access the all the repos. Apt-get stalls at ip 32.1.3.136.

View 4 Replies View RelatedUpgraded my laptop from 2Gb to 4Gb RAM and ubuntu doesn't detect it. I've read all the posts on this issue and I have:
1) installed a PAE kernel and made it the boot option. Output from uname -a is: Linux tensor 2.6.31-17-generic-pae #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:23:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
2) removed all the non PAE kernels (a post I found mentioned this if the PAE kernel doesn't sort it out after a reboot)
3) tried to install the linux server image & headers but this didn't work. I later found articles discussing how you couldn't do this under Koala anyway.
