I've just finished an upgrade from debian lenny to squeeze.But when I tried to log into my Gnome session the menu and the taskbar was missing and when i click on change desktop preferences nothing happen and i m not able to run anny command as well (alt+f2). The upgrading process went good i think and i dont know what i did wrong

After updating Xfce to version 4.8 the Xfce menu button on the taskbar dissapeared. If I right-click the taskbar and select "add new item", the Xfce menu option is not there! Is there anyway to get back the Xfce menu button in the taskbar?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a recent install of squeeze. Beside applications from the squeeze repos, I have installed a few applications from their own deb files / repositories, such as Skype, Google-Chrome (not the chromium in the squeeze repos), Opera and Teamviewer.
All those placed their menu entries in the gnome menu, however periodically, at a new login, the Google-Chrome and Teamviewer menu items are missing. The applications are still there, but they dont show anymore in the menus. Only way to get them back I found so far is to reinstall the application.
How can I edit the menu items from the Places menu in Gnome taskbar?

I saw a few videos where Debian 7 comes with a vertical menu bar at the left of the screen and most of the options are available is a nice graphical interface. squeeze with Gnome installed, but "Search for files" is missing in the mainenu under Places.
What's missing?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and I ve installed Jessie with KDE desktop.Everything's fine !!!!! but sometimes when I use webbrowsers the systray with KDE menustart is going off and missing.After that I can't switch window to window and can't minimize or resize the actual activity, without or with hotkeys either can't close the window, and these option bars ar missing too.I always do restart but I ve had enough. It is very irritating.Also I have tried to switch user logons with Alt Ctrl Fxx and start another graphic array with startx and it has worked fine but that's not the right way I think!!!!
View 11 Replies View RelatedI use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.
I'm running Squeeze with Gnome. Sometimes the buttons in System> Shut Down does not respond to mouse clicks. After rebooting it works again. It seems to be a random problem

How can I reset this? I have been using ubuntu for a while, but switch to debian for more stability. I am not very familiar with debian graphics or gnome desktop.
I don`t know what kind of combination of keys I pressed, but the title bar of all windows in my Gnome vanished. Trying to fix it, I unmarked the option "show menu bar" in one of my windows. Then, I realised I couldn`t put it back either. It`s kind of frustating be stuck in such a small problem, but Gnome isn`t offering me any easy way to put these things back in place. maybe with a keyboard combination of keys that recovers all of this?
I did it, it recovered Gnome windows default, but the menus are still gone. It just erased my customizations (colors, window color, bar size, etc.)
On my laptop, I have stable installed. The original install was about two years ago, and I've just been keeping up with all of the stable updates. It is now an up to date Lenny. Over the months and years I have added several new icon themes to Gnome. I have noticed over time that several of the icon themes' icons have turned up missing. As you can see, icon themes Amaranth, Crux and Dropline Etiquette are missing their respective theme icons. The icon themes work, when selected, but the icon theme icon in the "Customize Theme" window never appears. Several of the other icon themes are the same. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the icon theme packs, but that doesn't fix it. I also have a desktop system of Debian stable with some of the same icon themes as on the laptop, but it does not have this problem. However, it is a much newer installation.
I use Debian Jessie with Gnome.
I have installed Timeshift. Administrative password is requested when I click Timeshift icon in Gnome menu. I enter the password (or paste it to be sure) but it always returns with "incorrect password, please try agian" message. I am sure that I type my password correctly.
I looked at the icon's properties. It runs "timeshift-launcher". I changed it as "gksudo timeshift" or "sudo timeshift" or "gksu timeshift", enabled "Launch in terminal", disabled, but nothing changed. Always same password request window appears and it rejects my password.
However when I run "sudo timeshift" or "gksudo timeshift" command in Terminal it accepts my password and runs.
When I run for example Synaptics via Gnome Menu, password request window is with black background and it accepts my password. However when I run Timeshift, password request window is with gray background and it rejects.
Root password was not defined in my system during installation and I am the only user. I run administrative commands via sudo without any problem.
I'm wondering if somebody knows how to add more locations to "Send to", or "Move to" menu. Now there is only Desktop and Home folder. I know there is this nautilus actions configurator app, but with it, I'm able to add to main context menu, not to "Copy|Move to" submenu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian Squeeze, and I have a gnome theme called "Moomex" installed. I have had it for a while and it has worked fine, until it suddenly stopped displaying menu scroll arrows (like for long bookmark menus in web browsers). I can still scroll, but in place of the arrows is a solid colored rectangle that clashes with my theme. I went searching and found my theme's arrow image files (see code below). I have no idea how these files are implemented into the theme display, so I don't know how to re-enable them. I tried reinstalling the theme, but it changed nothing. These arrows show up just fine in any other stock theme, and they were fine in this one too until they randomly disappeared.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...

when I connected to the L32 HDTV over the HDMI cable, picture came up, and I thought great, plug & play. But the title bar and taskbar were missing and I soon learned that this cheap Vizio TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and simply upscales and chops off what it considers "overscan" when you drive it at the proper 720p 1280x720. To add to the problems, it doesn't report the correct EDID modes (look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see the probes or install and use the read-edid package) so 1366x768 isn't an option out of the box. I spent days mucking around with /etc/X11/xorg.conf with custom Modelines, strange options and copying confs from other threads, trying to get it working at 1366x768 or 1360x768 or 1368x768 (some variations seem to work for some people)
In the end, I didn't have to touch xorg.conf at all =) All I had to do was install the newer NVIDIA 195 drivers!!! Then you get the lovely Overscan Compensation slider in nvidia-settings, and all is well. First, you will have to apt-get remove the old drivers (probably -185 or -180). Install apt-show-versions for an easy way to do that. I had a bunch of junk, I just removed all packages that had nvidia-someversionnumber in the package name.

View 4 Replies View RelatedF13 just installed for me on a server back in the states for me. I VNC into it to setup my personal website. The GNOME menu listings do not have the tool I am familiar with that tells me which process are running, allows me to stop and start them, and to install them I believe if they are on the machine. I can see that MYSQL are on the machine with the Add/Remove tool. I also see myphpAdmin. I need to get both of these up and running. I should be able to do this with out going back to 1980's terminal commands right?

I can see the desktop drop down menu when I log in as user root
however I can not see any of the desktop drop down menus if I log in as regular user
I used to be able to right-click any panel in Gnome and select 'Properties' to chnage the size, color, add a new item, ect...
Now when I right-click a panel the only options I see are 'Help' and 'About Panels'
can somebody PLEASE tell me how to get my context menu items back?

I am trying to remove some icons from the "taskbar"/panel and find the only real options are adding MORE widgets, adding another panel, or deleting the whole panel.I simply want to remove a duplicate and re-arrange the icons without having to delete the panel, add another panel, and careful add, in the order I want the icons, the widgets right-click on the panel and I get "Task Manager Settings ALT+D,S" and "Panel Options" which offers no visible means of managing the panel.I condemned to deleting the panel and starting over?
I would like to make my panel display one icon per window per workspace as seen on the Crunchbang panels. I am using Gnome with Metacity on Squeeze, but I would have no problem switching window managers if whatever widget Crunchbang uses requires it.

Last night, when I logged in, I only got the desktop with whatever icons I have set on the desktop. The menu bar and the taskbars have disappeared completely.
Is there a way to recover this? Is this a common behaviour? I used to get this problem when I tried out QIMO.
