I'm having difficulty upgrading from 6.06lts to 10.10.
I have downloaded and burnt a cd, however it freezes on any option from the boot menu. I've tried the various options to no avail.
So i then tried a frugal install using unetbootin however when I try bootin through that using the 10.10 iso it comes up with this

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I have install ubuntu and windows in the same computer in their own partition. I think that I have remove something while I was reinstalling some wireless stuff using synaptic. When I launch the computer I get the dual booting but only with memory test and windows. I have the ubuntu installation cd. What can I do to get back the dual booting with the facility to launch ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

I'm trying to install Fedora 15 from a USB stick. I can boot off it just fine, but most of the menu options don't work:
Boot => Freezes indefinitely
Boot (Basic Video) => Freezes indefinitely
Verify and Boot => Freezes indefinitely

I'd like to install Fedora 14 64bit as a dual boot on an existing win 7 32bit system. When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

Originaly I had Win7 and Ubuntu (Ub) set up OK in dual boot. The Ub was on a seperate drive in its own partition - then the darn drive failed. Without reinstalling Uu I still get it as an option in the dual boot menu. If I do reinstall Ub I end up with a 2nd Ub option. How can I get the boot menu to show Win7 only, so that I can re-install Ub with only 1 entry in the boot table?
I have tried using bootrec.exe from the command line in Win7 recovery mode but that does not fix things.
I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?
Recently upgraded Karmic to Lucid (32 bit system).System freezes/locks-up intermittently (seems to be associated with Firefox). Only option is to power off.Have seen other (very recent) posts, many unanswered and none of use.

There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.

Both systems used Wubi installations of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop for x86 on Windows XP. In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have recently installed linux ubuntu and set it up, i was then promted to install updates (roughly 174). i did this, however once the updates had been downloaded, they continue to install then about halfway through it freezes, nothing happens and time does not fix this problem. I have restarted the laptop and 4 options appear, including recovery menu's, i have re-installed ubuntu as what i tried from that menu did not work.

I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. Since then I have had no end of trouble with Openoffice 3.2.
When I open any office app, the text on the menus is corrupted and has lines going through it. I've included some screenshot to show what I mean.
Also, sometimes when I open an Excel spreadsheet my entire system crawls to a standstill and it can take anything up to 10 minutes for it to respond again. Not even the mouse cursor will move. If I reboot the PC and open the same document it will sometimes be just fine. It is very random.
So far I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling openoffice.org from apt-get, but this hasn't fixed the problem.

i just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have two Lenovo laptops: One is a T410 now running on openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4. I got my wireless, keyboard languages/layouts, upgraded firefox... The other, a V570, is currently running Ubuntu 11.4 and I'd like to install openSUSE 11.4 on it.
Here is what I did. Downloaded openSUSE-11.4-DVD-x86_64.iso from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4 (Direct link). md5 checksum is good (compared to checksum posted by caf4926). Burned to DVD using Brasero. Installed openSUSE on the T410 (did the media check first from the installation menu - it was ok). Install went well and system is running fine. I'm happy with it
This is the problem I'm having; tried it about 10 times now and every time it's the same. Using the same DVD, trying to install openSUSE 11.4 on the V570 machine; after turning on, it boots from the DVD and I get the following 3 lines and then the cursor just sits at the fourth and does not continue

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

I was upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 with terminal. When terminal asked about mime.types (it asks what to do with it) I chose showing me the differences between the new and the old versions. and then I couldn't get out from the "showing differences menu"! so, I shut down the terminal. and now I'm afraid to reboot the computer. can someone possibly say, what i am to do next is it okay to reboot my computer. or do i have to do smth first? Oh, and i almost forgot, when i sudo do-release-upgrade i says that i have latest version and doesn't do anything. update manager isn't showing up neither
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.
I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).
I have dual boot my Windows 7 PC with Ubuntu 10.10 recently. Ubuntu boots well until I upgraded the system with Upgrade Manager. Then all of a sudden it won't load anymore.

Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system.On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.
