Ubuntu :: Get Rid Of Virtuoso-t And Nepomuk?
May 25, 2010Whenever I boot up ubuntu, virtuoso-t, nepomukserver and 8 instances of a nepomukservices process run, and these DO really slow my system a lot, giving slow response of GUI apps etc... I tried asking before, but nobody knew. I'd like to keep trying: How can I get rid of these processes. What starts them up? I want to remove the command that starts them from which ever config file it is.
NOTE: disabling the desktop search setting in KDE settings does NOT disable these 10 executables that slow down your system. Going to KDE control center and disabling nepomuk there isn't the answer. I'd like to know the config file

Aug 19, 2010I am new both here and in Linux. As the subject says, I would like to learn how to copy a directory (not a file) from terminal with progress bar showing. The copy is local, i.e., not to another computer. My distro is CentOS 5.5. I know that if I do it with nautilus I would see the progress, but I want to learn how to do it from the terminal. I know that PV command can show a progress bar, but from what I saw, it works well for files, but not for directories (recursive).
Is it possible to use PV for directories? If yes, could you please show me the syntax? I also saw that some people mentioned that rsync can also show a progress bar, I tried to do it, but it didn't work out - perhaps I got the syntax wrong. If rsync can really be used to copy directories with progress bar, show me the syntax? Any other ideas on how to do it? I would like ideas that do not involve using any script, i.e., just something that I can do using the regular commands.
General :: Link Terminal Sessions - Show Logged In As The Same User?
Jun 7, 2011I was doing some rather lengthy procedures using a terminal. Then I wrote script using Kate, and input it into that terminal, and then realized that I was logged in as a normal user in that terminal as opposed to a superuser, which is how I was logged in at the other terminal. I've never noticed this before because I've never done anything that takes this long.
Is there any way to link all terminal sessions in such a way that they all show me logged in as the same user? I don't even know if this is even important, but I don't want to risk losing any things that I had done.

after running an application such as xclock, the terminal dose not show anything, it looks like that the xclock application is running but its not displaying on my screen.I also tried xhost + remotehostIP then ssh -X loginremotehost but didn't solve the issue.

For example if I left a terminal window open on one of my desktops, could I make it display everything I am doing so that when I receive some general error in a program, I could jump over and get some more details. Aug 20, 2009Having logged in (to Fedora 11) with a terminal session, what command do I give to spawn the Gnome GUI desktop environment? Background: I'm running two Fedora boxes: one local, and one at the other end of my building (on fast LAN). I have full control/ownership of both boxes.
On the local box, I log-in to my vanilla F11 build, and I get the Gnome GUI automatically. Then I can open a terminal window, 'ssh -X -l myself remotebox; cinelerra' to run Cinelerra nicely in local desktop windows.
But sometimes I want to see my typical user desktop for the remote box. Now, IF the remote box is ALREADY running Gnome, I can VNC to it, etc. But, once having logged-out of the remote box, VNC closes and won't show me a GUI login page. (BTW: The remote box usually has no monitor, as well as being out of reach. So schlepping over to logon to it is a real pain.) So, here's the thing: I can login (to terminal session) and can bring up programs in local windows. But WHAT program do I launch in order to bring up Gnome??

Oct 1, 2009When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?

One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command

In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).

Apr 28, 2011I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.

Apr 22, 2010I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

Feb 9, 2011I have a LAMP installation for learning php and mysql. My online trainer pointed out that we always get a white screen when the php is wrong, when we should get error messages that say which line in the code is wrong etc.
I recently reinstalled mysql so it is the latest version from the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.
