Software :: Terminal And Konsole Windows Show Strange Characters

When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?
ANALYSIS:
One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command

In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).
This happened to me first time when i installed VLC Player,and now it happens in QT Designer too I dont know if its relevant,but when i installed Ubuntu,i installed it in Serbian language (cyrilic) and than switched to English.
I did a minimal install of Fedora 13 (i686), added X Window & LXDE groupinstalls, and xorg-x11-fonts-base, switched to level 5 in /etc/inittab.When rebooting, the First Process indeed starts, but any character seems to be replaced with squares. What am I missing ?
although I am not an Ubuntu user, hopefuly I'll find someoe to give me a hand. I am experiencing problem with mlabel command. My system is Mandriva 2010.2, XFCE, Mtools version 4.0.13. I would be grateful for any help.
In this case its the french accented e that is getting translated:[test]$ touch dd touch: cannot touch `351dd': No such file or directory the thing is the folder test is an smb mount. The windows server which is dropping files into it is able to make the file visible but the app running on the linux can't fetch it because the name is 'unexpected'if I create a file anywhere else e.g. in /tmp/ with the name response.txt it is fine. When I ls I see r?sponse.Can you advise me if I should be looking at the smb config AND the host config and give me some pointers as to where to get started trying to solve this.
when i run dpkg-reconfigure locales and the gui comes up its mostly strange characters like in the picture.URL...Its like that on every gui im opening.its an vps im ssh'ing to. So my first guess was that it was an ssh client error but i cant change anything in the client,im using tunnelier.
I use kde3.3. How could I set the title in the top of konsole terminal. for example, i would like to have the file name printed if I open the file using vi or vim.
At yesterday night i run a slackpkg update and then slackpkg upgrade-all. i deselect all kernel related entries,and all others ( dont remeber precisely, but approx 15 - 20 packages, i e kde related) i get to update.
After that i shut system down and going to sleep. today i start my eeepc 900 with slackware 13.0 after that update and see i cannot run "Terminal" link on desktop. ok, go to "start", "system", "konsole terminal". from first look in konsole window i see whatever not ok - window background is grey, not black as usual. when i run mc in this window, look like a monitor contrast is set to minimum, and brightness to maximum - very hard to see files, etc. all is very much light and small contrast.
I check kde windows - all its ok, brightness and contrast in konkueror windows and overall is ok -as same as previously times. i switch to ctrl-alt-f6 to native console - again, all is ok - background is black, all is ok.
i e problem is only with Konsole-Terminal under KDE. looks for configfiles / etc - nothing faund. no man entry for terminal nur console.
I've been looking for a alternative terminal to work in while using F15. I've done some Googleing and came across Konsole as being the most feature rich terminal. I'd like a terminal that provides a lot of features so I could possibly increase my efficiency. If something is KDE like Konsole does that mean I have to install the whole KDE environment? If so is there any Fedora terminal alternatives?
I know this is strictly a KDE problem, but I don't want to create another account anywhere and get the KDE spam, etc.
But if anybody who reads this list has the ear of (or is) a KDE person, a minor bitch with KDE in 13.0 and 13.1 is that if you were using Konsole terminals at the time of shutting down KDE, when next you start KDE, it replaces them with Terminal Emulators.
For some reason my gnome-terminal is starting in / when it should be ~ I have checked /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and /etc/passwd and everything seems fine as far as i can tell Konsole and xterm are starting up with the working dir to my home dir (as set by /etc/passwd) But im at a loss to see where gnome-terminal is starting in / if i enter cd with no argumants in gnome-terminal it is switching to ~ fine, so i dont think its mistaking my home dir for /
I am trying to write a .sh script that will source a file containing evnironment variables and then open a konsole terminal session that will have those settings.
I am having some text rendering issues.I am using F14 and having blocky (dark black blob) covering certain letters and/or numbers when rendering to my Monitor. I am using 'mesa' drivers and was wondering if this has anything to do with it.I wish to use only non-proprietary drivers.I have several friends whose machine I manage and they have been experiencing a similar phenomena.I use 19 and 22 inch LCD monitors and my friends have similar LCD monitors.I have attached a copy of some output with the problem. I have tried different fonts but have not been able to resolve the issue. Could someone help me in getting a possible solution to this problem?
I am trying to write a bash script that would save the current state of my konsole terminals and sessions. I'm using KDE3.X and for some reason the "profile" save does not save the current working directories... Anyway, I would like to know if there is an elegant way to obtain the current workdir of each terminal and session ? I've managed to do something with a clever use of DCOP extended functions, but it requires me to start every konsole with the --script option enabled, and I don't want to do that.
For some reason whenever I load gnome-terminal using 9.10 I get this message: To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>". See "man sudo_root" for details.

Now, looking briefly at the output, can't get what's happened lol! I mean, it's html for crying out loud. Not 'scripting' n all. What do you guys reckon has happened?
I am using a VRS for ftp operations. I have bought it with OpenSuSe 11.3 installed without any Control Panel installed. I have used NX and installed IceWM as windows manager. It works really great. Then system wanted me to upgrade. I did so. After upgrade to 11.4, my programs screwed up. They don't show any text at all but squares instead. I have tried everything i know to fix this but i could not manage to repair it.
My VRS has 512mb RAM , OpenSuse 11.4 (32-Bit) and has no control panel. I use yast through SSH Telnet client (Putty).
I have been dredging the internet trying to find the answer to this and frankly, my brain hurts. On some e-mails that show up fine in Windows are showing up with hexadecimal characters in Evolution. I assume that it is because of the encoding because I have downloaded every font in the book, it seems, including the microsoft tty fonts. I only can find how to change the encoding on Evolution and aside from foreign (I'm in US) encodings I just have the unicode 7 & 8 which don't help. I'm thinking there is some sort of proprietary Microsoft encoding that I need.
I use slackware64 13.1. In my root account the terminal have colors for folders, files, etc and characters like appear correct.I create a normal account for me, but specials characters don't appear and terminal have no colors.I read in a lot that I need to configure a .bashrc and a .bash_profile but I don't found this files in my root account to get some guide lines.
I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.
This may seem to be a silly question, but I googled along and found that most of relevant complaints was about a bug in video card driver.
My problem is - For some unknown reason, I can't resize the Konsole window horizontally while I can still resize vertically. This is bad as the corrent width of Konsole window fills the entire screen!
I noticed that if I have "exit" in a bash script file., e.g. script.sh,that when the word "exit" is reached, and the script file being executed is not in the PATH nvironment, i.e. ". script.sh", the whole konsole shell profile is exited! What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? I desire for a "goto" function in bash script files
