Ubuntu :: Show Time Elapsed/remained In 'shred' Terminal Command?
Jun 4, 2010
It is possible to not only have the progress of the shredding, but the time elapsed/remained/whatever as well? It would be great to be able to see the time elapsed/time remaining along with the percentage complete.

I am troubleshooting file copy time issues between 3 servers. I need to copy the same file from server A to both server B and server C and compare the elapsed times for the copy. Is there an easy way to do this?

I've done a lot of googling for this, but always found code that does not work on my compiler.Could anyone please post a small (working) program through which I can store the starting time of the program (milliseconds) and get the ending time of the program in integer variables?Am working on Fedora 8, and with the gcc compiler.

What is the best way to track elapsed real-time, for the most kinds of Linux systems?
clock_gettime() looks great, but I get this build error:
undefined reference to `clock_gettime'
..even though I have #include "time.h" Here is my uber-goal:
// Returns fractional seconds that have elapsed since Start_Ticks was set.
float elapsed_seconds( unsigned Start_Ticks )

I use nautilus-action to create a right-click shred command with these parameters.: -f -u -v -z %M
I thought the -v would give me some feedback as well as an "are you sure" dialog before deleting. But when I run Shred it just deletes the file without any feedback and no confirmation beforehand.
How can I get a confirmation prompt to occur before shredding occurs (to prevent me from accidentaly shredding something--sometimes I click the wrong item cause the mouse shifts last second).
Any why don't any icons ever appear on my context menu even though I'm assigning icons?

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

I'm resizing an ext4 partition from 100gb to 40gb (I only used 20gb of it or so). Lets say partition is at /dev/sda1. I used
Code:
efsck -f /dev/sda1
to check it
Then I did
Code:
resize2fs -p /dev/sda1 40G
to resize it
When I check fdisk -l, the partition is still 100gb. I have a feeling I resized ONLY the filesystem to 40, but the partition is still 100gb. How do I finish this?

I've just installed Unison. I created the default profile, selecting one of my subdirectories as the source. That done, the GUI disappeared, although a unison-2.32.52- process remained running. I can start another GUI session and, regardless of if I kill the old process, I can only choose my profile before the GUI disappears again. There is no opportunity to do anything else useful, such as selecting a destination directory.

I considered making my system run the following if an incorrect password is entered 10 times in a row or a specific dead-password is entered.Code:shred /home/.ecryptfs/$USER/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase.Because ext4 doesn't journal the contents of the file, only the metadata, the file would be shredded and it would be impossible to recover the encrypted home folder even with the password. Is there a simple way I could make GDM check this or would I have to patch and recompile GDM for something like this to work?

how to pass something more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal. I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm
[code]....
This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to
Code:
gnome-terminal -e mcTerm
Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

I was wondering if there was a way to show all current actions I am doing in a terminal window? For example if I left a terminal window open on one of my desktops, could I make it display everything I am doing so that when I receive some general error in a program, I could jump over and get some more details. I could also use it to see what commands are actually run when I do certain things.

I mean, obviously I can just type them out and italicize them or something equally boring, but what I'd like to do is make the code look like it does on these forums.Code:sudo apt-get install html-knowledgeI've been Googling like a mad man (not a euphemism) for the better part of an hour and can't turn up any pertinent results. I thought maybe somebody here could point me in the right direction. I'm tired of my blog posts looking ugly and disorganized when I start typing commands.

When I travel, I would like to tell my laptop that I, as a user, am in a different time zone that what the OS may think is local. And I would like the clock on my desktop (default Gnome bar date/time display) to show the local time.
Instead, I currently have to use sudo and change the system time... (click on the clock, choose time settings, set system time -- there are no other choices given). The applet thing allows me to add other locations, but they only show up if I click on the icon, as extra times below the main one.
Am I missing something? Using the wrong app?

By default, Fedora 11 sets my clock to military time. For example it says 16:22. I would like it to show civilian time (or at least know how to do it) I logged into the clock settings and had to put in the root password, but couldn't find where you do this. If you scroll on the time for hours, it just goes from 0 to 23 and back, not to AM and PM like some others.

This hard disk is an old Maxtor (60G) extracted from an old computer, working fine. I placed in an enclosure and connected it to my Linux Box (Slack 12.1). It was recognized immediately and mounted automatically. However, before giving away the hard disk, I tried to wipe the data by running shred /dev/sdf At some point, I realized that it was going to take a long time, and aborted the process and disconnected the enclosure. Now, none of my Linux boxes recognize the disk inside the enclosure. Here is the output, when I plug in the usb cable, while using systemrescuecd on my desktop computer:
Quote:
Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.116029] usb 2-6: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 12
Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.316054] usb 2-6: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub
Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.322051] usb 2-6: New USB device found, idVendor=04b4, idProduct=8613
Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.322054] usb 2-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0,
[Code]....
Is there a way to use this hard disk at this point?

What am I doing wrong here ? Shredding a directory with files is incredibly slow. If I create a file of similar size it is around 1000 times faster. Filesystem is ext4, OS is Slack current. Looking at top it shows shred's status as 'D' which, according to the man page, means uninterruptible sleep ! Also /usr/bin/time shows around 10 minutes but that time was printed on stdout approx. 7 minutes before the command prompt reappeared !
Code:
